Is Richie the one hit wonder here? Asking because it seems like it's almost all about Mindy.

Is Richie the one hit wonder here? Asking because it seems like it's almost all about Mindy. I'm sorry. I should have specified that Richie McDonald charted three singles between 1996-2009. The duet is his only top 40 hit. Since it came from Mindy McCready's album, I wanted to cover all the singles from it.

In 1989, Joni Harms had a strange request when she said, 'I Need A Wife'. That was the lead single to her album, Hometown Girl. Released in February, it peaked at #34 in April. Her swan song on the chart was next and that was the #54 peaking The Only Thing Bluer Than His Eyes.

In all fairness of disclosure, while doing today's One Hit Wonder, I stumbled upon the fact that Joni Lee Jenkins is NOT a one hit wonder. On the previous page, I had stated that her duet with her father, Conway Twitty called Don't Cry Joni (#4 in 1975) made her a one hit wonder. Not so. In 1976, she peaked at #16 with I'm Sorry Charlie. Thus, I deleted my post. Someone with two top 20 hits does not qualify here.

Bill Engvall is a stand-up comedian perhaps best known for being part of the Blue Collar Comedy Tours along with Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy, and Ron White. His signature routine is Here's Your Sign, where anytime somebody did or said something stupid Bill would provide a sarcastic reply, then say "here's your sign" while handing the person a sign that says "I'm Stupid." He released a single based on the routine titled Here's Your Sign (Get the Picture) with Travis Tritt (there was also a longer album version). It peaked at #29 country and #43 pop in early 1998 and is certified gold. He later released a Christmas version titled Here's Your Sign Christmas, with the chorus sung to the tune of Jingle Bells (I'm not sure who sang the chorus; they weren't credited like Travis Tritt was on the original version). Based on chart policy at that time it charted during the 1998, 1999, and 2000 Christmas seasons, with the highest peak being #39 during the 1999 season (I believe it actually peaked on the first chart of January 2000, which would have reflected Christmas airplay). He had 7 other country chart appearances, none of which reached the top 50.

It was the beginning to the end for Brooks & Dunn in 2009. That year they announced their retirement and would tour for the final time between 2009-2010. In 2009, Arista Records released #1s And Then Some. The two disc set contained two new songs. Lead single, Indian Summer peaked at #16 during the summer (coincidence?). Second and final single, Honky Tonk Stomp is a duet with Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top. Released in August, it peaked at #16 in October. To date, it is Brooks & Dunn's final single. After their final tour, both artists pursued solo careers. They reunited a few years later and did a Las Vegas residency with Reba McEntire. Since then, the #1s CD has been rereleased as The Essential Brooks & Dunn (2012).

Toby Keith released his second greatest hits album in 2004. Lead single, Stays In Mexico peaked at #3. Second and final single was a duet with his daughter, Krystal Keith. That was Mockingbird and that was a remake of the Carly Simon/James Taylor hit of 1974 (#5 pop and #10 adult contemporary). The Keiths' version was released in October and peaked at #27 in January, 2005. Krystal would place just one more single on the chart and that is 2013's Daddy Dance With Me (#58).

The Maines Brothers Band charted six singles between 1983-1986. Only one broke the top 40. The group consisted of four Maines brothers and a rotating cast of five others. Their 1986 album, The Boys Are Back In Town was led by the lead single, Everybody Needs Love On Saturday Night. That was released in January, 1985 and topped off at #24 in April. Two more singles charted: Some Of Shelly's Blues (#72 in 1985) and Danger Zone (#59 in 1986). Lloyd Maines is the father of Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks.

She's well known for starring in The Carol Burnett Show between the 1960s and 1970s and then Mama's Family during the 1980s, but Vicki Lawrence had a recording career during the 1970s. She made just one appearance on the country chart and that was The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia. That was the lead single and title track to her 1973 album. Released in November 1972, it peaked at #1 pop and #6 adult contemporary. It finally cracked the country chart in April, 1973 and peaked at #36 in June. One more single was released and that was He Did With Me (#75 pop and #14 A.C.). It should be noted that Lawrence was married to the songwriter at the time, Bobby Russell. Reba McEntire released her version of The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia in 1992. It peaked at #12.

In honor of group member Ray Sawyer, who died Sunday at age 81, here's the only top 40 country hit for Dr. Hook (originally known as Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show). They were primarily known as a pop band in the 1970s and early 1980s, placing six songs in the top 10 of the Hot 100. All six songs peaked at either #5 or #6 on the pop chart. They also placed eight songs on the country chart (seven of them appeared on both the pop and country charts; A Couple More Years appeared on the country chart only). Their only top 40 country hit was If Not You (1976), which reached #55 on the pop chart and #26 on the country chart. It was from their album A Little Bit More. My apologies to onebuffalo if he previously posted this; I did not look back through the entire thread.

Gordon Lightfoot is one of a few Canadians with a major country hit in America. He first became a chart topping songwriter when Marty Robbins took Ribbon Of Darkness to the top in 1965. Nine years later, Lightfoot released an album called Sundown. The title track was the lead single. Released in March, it topped the pop and adult contemporary charts. Finally, it cracked the country chart in May and climbed all the way to #13 in August. A second single became a crossover hit as well and that is Carefree Highway (#81 country, #10 pop, and #1 A.C.). Lightfoot would have six more country entries until 1986. Deryl Dodd released a version of Sundown in 1999 (#59). Lightfoot recently turned 80 and will be playing some shows this year.

Maybe it's because they were in competition with other sister groups like The Forester Sisters and The McCarters, but The Burch Sisters became a one hit wonder in 1988. They signed to the Mercury label in 1987. Their debut single, Everytime You Go Outside I Hope It Rains was released in April, 1988 and peaked at #23 in August. A whopping four other singles were released. They are (first two were in 1988 while the last two were in 1989 when their only album, New Fire was released): What Do Lonely People Do (#61), I Don't Want To Mention Any Names (#45), Old Flame, New Fire (#46), and The Way I Want To Go (#59).

Sting became a one hit wonder on the country chart between the years of 1997-1998. He did so via a duet with Toby Keith called I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying. That came from the 1997 Keith album, Dream Walkin'. Lead single, We Were In Love peaked at #2 for two weeks in September and could not clear Kenny Chesney's She's Got It All from the top in September. The second single, I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying was a remake of the Sting hit of 1996 (#94 pop). The duet version was released in October and peaked at #2 in January, 1998 and could not dethrone Tim McGraw's Just To See You Smile from #1. The duet version did better on the pop chart versus the solo single (#84). Two more singles were released: the title track (#5) and Double Wide Paradise (#40). The latter broke a streak of 14 consecutive top 20 hits for Keith.

Eric Clapton released an album in 1977 that made him a one hit wonder in country music in 1978. Lead single from Slowhand, Lay Down Sally was released in November and peaked at #3 pop and #25 adult contemporary in early 1978. It finally cracked the country chart in February where it peaked at #26 in April. Second and final single, Wonderful Tonight peaked at #16 pop and #39 A.C.. Clapton's only other country connection was to cover Don Williams' Tulsa Time. Clapton's version reached #30 pop in 1980.

Before becoming a top songwriter/producer, Shane McAnally had a brief fling on the country chart between 1999-2000. He signed to the Curb label in 1998. His debut single, Say Anything was released in 1999 and peaked at #41 and almost made McAnally a two hit wonder (who kept him out of the top 40?). Second single, Are Your Eyes Still Blue was released in June and peaked at #31 in October. He kicked off 2000 with his swan song, Run Away (#50). After that song peaked, Curb released the Shane McAnally album.

It was released in June and climbed all the way to #19 in September. Five more singles were released: There's No Substitute For Love ended their 1982 on a #48 note. Four more followed in 1983: Somewhere Down The Line (#50-later redone by T.G. Sheppard-#3 in 1984), A Taste Of The Wind (#54), Lovers On The Rebound (#48), and Shoot First, Ask Questions Later (#65). Wild Choir only lasted two years (1985-1987). Their lead singer, Gail Davies had a hit filled career. Her biggest hit was 1981's I'll Be There If You Ever Want Me (#4). They signed to the RCA label in 1985 and issued their debut single and only album in 1986. The album was a self-titled one and the lead single was Next Time which peaked at #51. Second single, Heart To Heart was released in October and peaked at #40 in November. They kicked off 1987 with their third single, Safe In The Arms Of Love which did not chart. It did chart for Martina McBride in 1995 (#4).

Curtis Wright released four singles between 1989-1993. Only three charted. He signed to the Airborne label in 1989. He released his debut single, She's Got A Man On Her Mind in October and that peaked at #38 in December. The same week he peaked with his song, Ronnie Milsap was tops with a Wright tune, A Woman In Love. Wright kicked off 1990 with his second single, You Saved Me which did not chart. Both songs came from an unreleased album called Slick Hick. Conway Twitty remade She's Got A Man On Her Mind and that became his final top 40 hit in 1991 (#22). Wright would form the duo of Orrall & Wright. They released three singles between 1994-1995 with two of them charting.

Bobby Pinson was with RCA Records between 2004-2006. It yielded just one album and two singles. That album's name was Man Like Me. Lead single, Don't Ask Me How I Know was released in January, 2005 and peaked at #16 in June. Second and final single became Pinson's swan song and that was the #58 peaking Way Down. Since his RCA days, Pinson has remained a hot songwriter.

One of the rules in this thread is the following:
2. The example must be at least five years old.
That means today's example just graduated to one hit wonder status. It is five years and one month old. Jason Mraz is not a one hit wonder on pop and adult contemporary charts. In country, he is. He managed to be one with Hunter Hayes via a duet called Everybody's Got Somebody But Me. That came from the deluxe version of Hayes' debut album. Hunter Hayes Encore was released in 2013. 'Lead single' I Want Crazy peaked at #2. Second and final single, Everybody's Got Somebody But Me was released in August and peaked at #15 in December.

The Marcy Brothers consisted of a trio of brothers (handy!). In any case, they signed to Warner Bros. in 1988. They issued their debut single that year called The Things I Didn't Say (#68). They opened 1989 with the #52 peaking Threads Of Gold. Warner Bros. released their debut album that year called Missing You. Third single, Cotton Pickin' Time was released in April and peaked at #34 in July, becoming their only top 40 hit. They ended 1989 with the #70 peaking You're Not Even Crying. The fifth single, the title track peaked at #79 in 1990. In 1991, they released their self-titled album. Two singles were released, but the bigger story was an album cut called Don't Tell My Heart. The was rechristened as Achy Breaky Heart and that became Billy Ray Cyrus' only #1 hit in 1992. Cotton Pickin' Time would be covered by Blake Shelton for his Blake Shelton's Barn & Grill album.

Not much is known about Judy Bailey. However, between the years of 1980-1981, she became a one hit wonder. She did so via a duet with Moe Bandy with Following The Feeling. That was the lead single and title track to Bandy's 1980 album. Released in November 1980, it peaked at #10 in January, 1981. Second and final single, My Woman Loves The Devil Out Of Me peaked at #15.
