Panic! at the Disco's 'Pray for the Wicked' Set for No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200 Chart

Panic! at the Disco’s new album, Pray for the Wicked, is on track to debut at No. 1 on next week’s Billboard 200 chart, according to industry forecasters. Sources suggest the set, which was released on June 22 via DCD2/Fueled by Ramen, may start atop the list with more than 165,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending June 28.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multimetric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the July 7-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Panic! could debut at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, June 30.

If Pray debuts at No. 1, it will garner Panic! at the Disco its second chart-topper, following the act’s last studio effort, Death of a Bachelor, which launched atop the list dated Feb. 6, 2016. It opened with 190,000 equivalent album units earned in its first week, according to Nielsen Music.

Pray was led by the hit single “Say Amen (Saturday Night),” which just earned Panic! its first No. 1 on the Alternative Songs airplay chart (dated June 30), as it climbs 2-1 in its 14th week on the tally.

Other albums aiming for significant debuts on next week’s Billboard 200 include: Dan + Shay’s self-titled set, Nine Inch Nails’ Bad Witch and Bebe Rexha’s Expectations.

“Pray” logs biggest week for an alternative rock album in 2018.

Panic! at the Disco bows atop the Billboard 200 with Pray for the Wicked, earning the act its second No. 1 album on the tally. Panic previously hit the top of the list with its last studio effort, Death of a Bachelor, which opened at No. 1 in 2016.

Pray for the Wicked -- which was released on June 22 via DCD2/Fueled by Ramen -- launches with 180,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending June 28, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 151,000 were in traditional album sales. Both figures represent the biggest week for an alternative rock album in 2018.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new July 7-dated chart (where Panic! at the Disco debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, July 2.



Pray for the Wicked’s start in both total units and traditional album sales marks the largest week for an alternative rock album since U2’s Songs of Experience debuted at No. 1 on the Dec. 23, 2017-dated chart with 186,000 units (180,000 in album sales). Pray’s handsome sales were encouraged by a pre-order campaign for the album via the act’s official merch store, where pre-orders made by June 21 included early access to purchase tickets to the act’s tour.
Pray also garners a robust start in terms of vinyl album sales, bowing with 26,000 copies sold. That’s the fifth-largest week for a vinyl effort in Nielsen Music history, which dates back to when the company began tracking sales in 1991. (The largest week for a vinyl set belongs to Jack White’s Lazaretto with 40,000 sold in its debut frame in the week ending June 15, 2014.)

Pray was led by the single “Say Amen (Saturday Night),” which became Panic’s first No. 1 on the Alternative Songs airplay chart after 11 previous entries. “Say Amen” ascended to the top of the list dated June 30.


XXXTentacion’s former No. 1, ?, continues to move back up the Billboard 200 following the rapper/singer’s death on June 18. The set rises 3-2 with 86,000 units (though down 9 percent). XXXTentacion’s 17 also climbs, rising 7-5 with 45,000 units (down 18 percent).

Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys moves 4-3 with 75,000 units (down 10 percent) while The Carters’ Everything Is Love dips 2-4 with 59,000 units (down 52 percent).
Country duo Dan + Shay collect its third top 10 effort, as its self-titled third studio set debuts at No. 6 with 44,000 units (24,000 in traditional album sales). The act previously visited the top 10 with its first two albums: Obsessed (No. 8 in 2016) and Where It All Began (No. 6, 2014).

Juice WRLD’s Goodbye & Good Riddance steps 8-7 with 44,000 units (up 2 percent), Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy shifts 9-8 with 43,000 units (down less than 1 percent) and the soundtrack to The Greatest Showman returns to the top 10 after one week away from the region, as it climbs 12-9 with 33,000 units (down 7 percent).

Closing out the top 10 is 5 Seconds of Summer’s Youngblood, which falls from No. 1 to No. 10 in its second week (30,000 units; down 79 percent).

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: The Beatles' '1' Back in Top 40 After More Than Two Years

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated July 7), Panic! at the Disco collects its second No. 1 album as Pray for the Wicked tops the list. The set earned 180,000 equivalent album units in the week ending June 28, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 151,000 were in traditional album sales. Both figures represent the largest weeks of the year for an alternative rock album.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:

— Nine Inch Nails, Bad Witch (EP) – No. 12 — The new album’s arrival gives Nine Inch Nails its 17th entry on the tally. The act first dented the list on Feb. 10, 1999 with Pretty Hate Machine, which went on to peak at No. 75 the following year. Nine Inch Nails’ charting albums on the list include six top 10s, of which two hit No. 1: The Fragile (1999) and With Teeth (2005).

— Bebe Rexha, Expectations – No. 13 — The pop singer-songwriter’s debut full-length studio album starts at No. 13 with 26,000 units (of which 10,000 were in traditional album sales). It was preceded by the effort’s smash single “Meant To Be,” with Florida Georgia Line. The cut’s track sales for the week (23,000) and on-demand audio streams (9.5 million) account for 33 percent of the album’s total units for the week.

Since its debut on the Sept. 22, 2012-dated list, it has only been absent from the chart for four weeks. In total, the album has earned 5.8 million equivalent album units, of which 2.85 million are in traditional album sales.

— Foster the People, Sacred Hearts Club – No. 191 — After more than a year off the chart, the album returns to the list thanks to the increased popularity of its hit single “Sit Next to Me.” The album jumps back onto the tally with 5,000 units (up 3 percent) as “Sit” rises 59-51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and breaks the top 20 on the Pop Songs airplay chart, ascending 21-20. It’s the band’s third hit on the Pop Songs chart, their first since 2012’s “Don’t Stop” peaked at No. 34, and their highest charting since their breakthrough hit “Pumped Up Kicks” topped out at No. 3 in 2011.

Wait, that's insane. I had no clue it was this huge! That's 6x Platinum with RIAA since they include video streams. 

And since it's still a slow-burner that charts weekly it could eventually go Diamond. Similar case with 'Take Care' which is around 6x Platinum with RIAA likely, and continues to be top 100 every week after 278 weeks.
