George Strait Album Series

I have been teasing this one for a LONG time, so it's time for me to finally do something about it! George Strait is one of the most legendary musicians of all time. He has 60 #1 hits to his name (more than any other artist ever), and is also one of the top selling artists of all time. With a career that is now approaching 40 years, he has entertained literally generations of fans. It is with no sense of irony or embellishment that he has universally earned the title of the King of Country Music.

I hosted the George Strait singles rankdown earlier this year. Many old fans came together, a few new fans were made, and a lot of fun was had! However, that rankdown had limitations because it was SO huge that it was hard for non-fans to get into. And despite its huge size, there were talks of so many missed single opportunities and songs that didn't get to be acknowledged because it simply would have been too much for people to handle.

So here we are! Starting a new album series to honor The King! I want this to be a chance for his fans to celebrate and discuss the obscure album cuts that didn't get to be featured in the general rankdown. Any casual fans who know his hits but not his albums are also invited to use this as an excuse to finally dive into them. I also want this to be a chance for anybody who has ever thought about checking him out to have an easy opportunity to do so in small 10-20 song chunks rather than having to sit through all 100 of his hits all at once...

Here's how it works!


George has 30 studio albums, not counting Christmas projects, lives albums, compilations, etc. I understand that this is a HUGE undertaking, and tbh I don't want to drag this out so long that we're still sitting here in 3 years trying to finish this up... Most of George's albums are pretty short (most of them only 10 tracks), so I have decided I am going to double them up. The albums will still each be separate rankdowns, I will just have two of them open at the same time. I also would like to have the submission periods be relatively short, like maybe 2-3 weeks each.

As far as order is concerned, I plan to start at both ends of his career. We will start with his first album, Strait Country, and pair it with his newest album Cold Beer Conversation. That way we will get a taste of both older and more modern George at the same time. Those who want to can check out his newer stuff and ignore the old, or vice versa. But my hope is that people will check out and submit for both albums in any given submission period! For the most part, his albums are so consistent that you won't be disappointed if you do both  Then for the next rankdown we will proceed in order, going forward from the beginning, and backwards from the end. (Strait From the Heart/Love Is Everything, for those who are keeping track.)

My hope is that by organizing it this way, we won't have to wait too long to get to certain albums that are universally praised. He has beloved albums from every decade of his career, and if we were to start on one end and work to the other, or even pick randomly, we would be stuck waiting forever for certain albums to show up! Hopefully by doing two of them at the same time, on both ends of his career, we will all be satisfied

Submissions for the first two albums are now open! Note: Don't forget, these are still two separate album rankdowns! They are just open at the same time. You are allowed to participate in neither, one or the other, or both of them. Whatever your preference! I hope that for the most part people will participate in both, because it would sure suck to have a bunch of participants for one and none for the other... Lol.

I will give you plenty of time for this first set. I will set the deadline for Sunday, August 19. Of course we can reevaluate as that day gets closer once I have a better sense for what the interest level is here

Maybe if it were like his last two records side-by-side or his first two or something, but this shift seems... jarring to me. Just my opinion.

He's just putting two albums out at a time (apparently for our listening pleasure!). Rank each separately. 

I'm all for listening unrestrained & unsupervised to the world's most perfect man! My hubby used to just laugh and buy the concert tickets. He was a blue collar city boy...

Wow, thanks for clarifying for me. I totally read the first big post and it didn't really make that separation part clear to me, but then I see now that in his second post he explained that, but I glossed over that part at the end and missed it.

Maybe if it were like his last two records side-by-side or his first two or something, but this shift seems... jarring to me. Just my opinion.

Yeah, that's understandable. This rankdown series is just such a big proposition, it's difficult to figure out a way to handle it that would satisfy everybody, while also trying to entice new listeners. The main problem with going strictly chronologically is that I honestly don't have enough faith in Pulse's ability to get through a bunch of albums from the '80s if they all happen together. Even though all of George's albums are really good, I feel like a casual fan is more likely to sit and listen to the stuff from the second half of his career first if they have a choice. There are definitely people where if we start going chronologically from the beginning they won't participate because they have no interest in older albums, and then by the time we get to the '90s and '00s they won't already be hooked so they might decide to just never join even once the albums get newer. But then if we start chronologically from the end, I worry those same people would just abandon ship once we get to a certain point and they start to lose interest in the '80s music. I also thought about just letting us pick the albums randomly, like with the Martina albums, but again George just has SO many albums. I worry that with the lack of a cohesive pattern, people would get bored just having 30ish albums floating around in limbo, unsure of what would come next. I honestly thought about just ignoring the '80s albums too, but tbh that just doesn't feel right for somebody who was as successful right from the beginning as George was.

So this is just what I came up with in my attempt to provide something for everybody. Die-hard fans will get multiple albums at the same time, and not have to wait like 2 years to get to the gems on either side of his career. Newer fans/people who randomly decide to participate will always have a newer album to check out, and just maybe they will decide to check out the older ones as well since they're already checking out the more modern ones. And then the albums will just continue to get closer and closer together, so by the time we get to George's peak years in the mid-'90s, we'll get to finish strong with many of his best albums happening back-to-back-to-back!

So tl;dr, I see what you're saying. But I want to try this idea to see how it works, because pretty much any type of rollout is going to have flaws, and this one seems like it will make the most people happy. But I will definitely be open to suggestions if people decide they don't like this format once we get through this first pairing of albums :)

I saw Asleep at the Wheel last night. Stellar show as always. Ray Benson is one of the most naturally funny people ever...he's talking about the Wheel's tribute to Bob Wills albums, talking about his guest artists. There was the one about the kid who got a record contract, had a few hits and now sells insurance (Nationwide is on your side)...Brad Paisley, and then there was the kid who used to open shows for the Wheel...he closes shows for them now...George Strait!

I dunno this album well enough to do all these predictions, but I think "Unwound" will win in rather predictable fashion by being the recognizable single, and that "I Get Along with You" will (hopefully) be last place.
