Okay, so I was just thinking about Imagine Dragons and their Evolve era. At the beginning of 2017 I don’t think anyone saw the massive success they got from it coming, especially since they were coming off a mediocre second era. However, they managed to score 3 alt #1s, as well as 3 CHR top 3s and a pair of top 5 hits in the hot 100, which is not too far off from what they accomplished with their debut singles.
Can you guys think of any other acts that have done this, having a big first era, flopping with the second, but rebounding with the third?

Can arguably say No Doubt. They did have an era before Teagic Kindom but no one remembers that.Tragic Kingdom was a great era then Return of Saturn was kind of a flop era as Simple Kind of life was the only decent hit even though Bathwater, Ex girlfriend and New are well known songs from that era. The next era was the Rock Steady era which was a great era for No Doubt.

Definitely No Doubt.
Also, The Offspring. It took me while to realize they had an album between their breakout Smash and Americana.

Lil Wayne had a MASSIVE 7th album. 8th was a huge flop, 9th was eh and 10th was also huge.

The Beastie Boys? Licensed to Ill was huge, but Paul's Boutique, for all of its later acclaim and influence, underperformed in its initial release. They were largely written off commercially for the next few years, until they rebounded with Check Your Head, and the next eras (Ill Communication and Hello Nasty) were bigger still. (To the 5 Boroughs less so, but in the late 1980s most probably didn't anticipate them still being platinum in 2004.)

Dr. Dre Only if you include The Aftermath compilation which isn't an official studio album - but it was considered a big disappointment critically and commercially after The Chronic.
Weezer Pinkerton went platinum and eventually got respect years later - but didn't have the hits or the sales of their first or third albums

Mariah Carey's Emotions compared to her debut and Music Box eras Her first and third were surely big in comparison to Emotions, but Emotions was by no means a flop. Also, The Offspring. It took me while to realize they had an album between their breakout Smash and Americana. They didn't have any mainstream hits off their second album, but they did have a #1 rock hit with "Gone Away" and a top 5 rock hit with "I Choose."

Emotions only garner one No.1, it was shut out at the Grammys and those sales pale in comparison to her debut & Music Box.

Ok. You're entitled to your opinion. So how do you define "flop" then?

He should have said it underperformed which would be more accurate.

He should have said it underperformed which would be more accurate. Well, to that end it wouldn't fit the topic question so it didn't need to be mentioned. Plus technically "I'll Be There" hit #1 between Emotions and Music Box, so you could consider that her rebound. But again, a rebound from what? 3 top 5 hits? Lol.

It definitely wasn't a flop but it did underperform if you go by album sales of the 1st and 3rd studio album. Which is probably the main reason we got an album like "Music Box." lol Tommy made sure he wasn't taking any calculated risks on that 3rd studio album.

Of course every interesting thread topic has to get sidetracked by a stan war on Pulse... Emotions wasn't a flop (or an "underperformer") because it wasn't a detriment to Mariah's career at all and no one wrote her off during or after that album campaign (which did have hits, duh!). I think the OP's original intended idea for this thread pertains to acts that left such a small impact during their sophomore era that no one ever expected to see them at the top ever again. Nelly Furtado and No Doubt are great examples.

Hilary Duff. Methamorphosis, her debut album remains her biggest one, and it gave her two minor hits with "Come Clean" and "So Yesterday". Her self-titled sophomore album only sold half of what Methamorphosis did and yielded zero Hot 100 entries. Her third album, Most Wanted, sold almost as much as self-titled and gave her "Wake Up", which was her biggest hit at that point.
I wouldn't call her self-titled a total flop though, as it still sold well and "Fly" kept her on rotation on Disney Channel which was enough for her to sell almost 2million copies.
