An even trickier situation is that of Smooth, a bigger chart hit than WBT and IGF, that ended up in the top 20 of 1999 and #2 of 2000 —so it’s not a year end #1. Most of its success happened in 2000, so it could easily be considered a 2000s song and thus also be the song of the decade.... I think it fits more the 2000s than the 1990s, but in any case it’d be a bigger hit than WBT, IGF, or OSD.

As has been said, it's basically a matter of semantics. The biggest song "of" (or "within") a year or decade is ultimately different than the biggest song "from" a year or decade. You just have to ascertain what someone's intent is if they ask a question or make a statement.

The thing about pre-album songs that debut high and then fall back down, like GIAW... that's just reality for most. Songs used to regularly climb from a very low debut and eventually peak. Even though debut peaks are fairly common these days - as is the ability for some songs to debut in the top 10 and stay there - it's still true that hits can take awhile to grow. So what we see is initial fan buzz/rush, followed by a few weeks of decline until radio and other promotion can push it back upward.

As for GIAW, a promotional push is coming, not the least of which will be Ariana's VMA performance.

The thing about songs going recurrent "early" from album bombs is that everything on the charts every week is circumstantial.  "If this hadn't happened, this would've done this" is a pretty common thing in these forums.  The reality is, this applies to every song in any given week.  There's a constant ebb and flow of circumstances that shape a song's performance on the charts.  Luck is a big part of chart success.

I’m not sure why anyone gets bent over songs going recurrent - they’ve already peaked and are below the 25 or 50 threshold. No impact whatsoever on that track’s peak, etc. In fact, bombs actually provide opportunity to flush out dead weight.

It’s too bad BB hasn’t rolled out a comprehensive tracks chart similar to album chart - say a Top 200 that would include recurrents. I don’t really that much of a difference between a catalogue album and a recurrent song - especially with streaming being a large component of both.

There was a discussion about this recently, and I think it's as simple as Billboard not wanting a chart to compete with their flagship Hot 100, for one.   And more than that, it's not really something the industry is asking for, because as you mentioned, recurrency has no impact whatsoever.  So watching songs linger around on a super comprehensive chart seems like a waste of time, specifically for an industry-targeted publication.  Thoughts?
