Travis Scott's 'Astroworld' Set to Dethrone Drake's 'Scorpion' With No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200 Albums Chart
News
By Keith Caulfield | August 06, 2018 4:40 PM EDT
Travis Scott is on course for his second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, according to industry forecasters. Prognosticators suggest his new effort, Astroworld, should launch atop next week’s chart with perhaps 450,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Aug. 9. It will likely push aside Drake’s Scorpion, which has spent its first five weeks at No. 1.
Scott's amusement park-themed new album has done robust business on streaming services, and is also selling well thanks to an array of Astroworld-inspired merchandise/album bundles sold via Scott’s official website.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the Aug. 18-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Astroworld will likely debut at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, Aug. 12.
If Astroworld starts with 450,000, it will score the third-biggest week of 2018 for an album, following the debut frames of Drake’s Scorpion (732,000 units, according to Nielsen Music) and Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys (461,000).
Astroworld was released on Aug. 3 via Cactus Jack/Grand Hustle/Epic Records, and is Scott’s first album since his 2016 chart-topping set Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight. That album bowed atop the tally with 88,000 units earned in its first week.
Other albums aiming for sizable debuts on next week’s Billboard 200 chart include YG’s Stay Dangerous, Mac Miller’s Swimming and Moneybagg Yo’s Bet on Me.

Keeping Up With Travis Scott: How The Rapper's 'Astroworld' Soared to No. 1 With One of the Year's Best First Weeks
8/8/2018 by Sowmya Krishnamurthy

They call it the Kardashian Curse: Whether it’s rappers like French Montana or Tyga or professional athletes like Blake Griffin, Reggie Bush, or Kris Humphries, popular wisdom says high-profile men who date the Kardashians inevitably get overshadowed by reality TV plot lines and endless gossipy headlines -- and their careers are never the same.
“Every male figure that comes and dates a Kardashian…Their life kinda just goes downhill after that," the youngest Kardashian, 21-year-old reality star and lip kit maven Kylie Jenner, explained about the so-called “Kardashian curse” -on Keeping Up With the Kardashians in 2016. A cautionary warning to any new man that enters the fold: Keep up with the Kardashians and kiss your career goodbye.

But with the release of Astroworld, Travis Scott flexes his mettle over superstition. The rapper, who welcomed a daughter with Jenner earlier this year, is expected to take the top spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Scott’s sophomore album is poised to dethrone Drake’s Scorpion run at the top, with a predicted 450,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Aug. 9, in what will be the third-biggest week of 2018 for an album, following the debuts of Scorpion (732,000 units) and Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys (461,000).
The curse is broken -- or maybe there wasn’t one in the first place. Regardless, here’s how Travis Scott was able to level up:
Building anticipation
For Travis Scott, the success of Astroworld is a long time coming. The Houston rapper inked a major label deal with Epic Records in 2012. He’s maintained momentum by steadily releasing music every year, including two mixtapes and two studio albums; 2015’s Rodeo and 2016’s Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight. The latter also debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 -- though the project only moved a fraction of the numbers of his current release in its first week; with 88,000 equivalent album units registered in the week ending Sept. 8.
Astroworld in particular has been a marathon meal: Scott announced the album back in May 2016 and fans have been salivating ever since. Like Dr. Dre’s Detox or Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole’s rumored collaboration project, the anticipation was palpable. Fan hub Kanye To The has numerous threads dedicated to the album that go back for years. There’s no shortage of fan predictions and theories on Reddit. Scott released the lead single, “Butterfly Effect,” back in 2017, which has since been certified double-Platinum by the RIAA As a teaser before the album, he released “Watch” with Kanye West and Lil Uzi Vert as a snack to tide fans over, though it didn't end up appearing on Astroworld. The song debuted in the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Enlisting surprise guests
Scott is no stranger to finding success working alongside an array of star artists and producers. Two of his highest-charting singles to date came last year, with guest appearances on Miguel’s “Sky Walker" and Drake's “Portland," the latter giving him his first top 10 hit on the Hot 100. Last December, he also released the acclaimed Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho with Quavo, which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.
For Astroworld, the rapper pulls from a diverse guest list, ranging from superstars like Drake and The Weekend to less-expected appearances by Tame Impala, Frank Ocean and even the legendary Stevie Wonder. What’s more, the album tracklist doesn’t explicitly spell out any of the features: Since all guests go uncredited, fans have been poring over the 17-tracks trying to decode the guests on their own. Like a musical scavenger hunt, it’s a crafty way to engage fans into hitting play over and over, racking up extra streams in the process.
Becoming a live star
With new material out every year, Scott has also built an impressive touring resume. His live shows are known for being so spirited and rowdy -- expect a mosh pit, for sure -- that he was arrested and charged for “inciting a riot” in May 2017 in Arkansas, as well as at Lollapalooza in 2015.
So far, 2018 has been a marquee year for the rapper on the road, and with every stop, his rep as hip-hop’s preeminent rager continues to swell. He’s notched headliner spots this year at the Governors Ball Music Festival, the Osheaga Festival, Rolling Loud and Austin City Limits. Astroworld coincided with his appearance at Lollapalooza, and he performed “5% TINT” from the album there for the first time. Although Scott was playing a side stage, his crowds dwarfed those of main stage headliner Arctic Monkeys.
Building a brand
Scott resides at the intersection of streetwear, high fashion and rap chic. His ad lib “It’s lit!” nicely describes his aesthetic: He is a brand people want to emulate. He’s been dubbed “Music’s Fashion King” by GQ, has a collaboration with Nike for the iconic Air Force 1 sneaker and gets invited to the Met Gala— wearing Alexander Wang nonetheless.
In a savvy move, Scott released his Astroworld merchandise like a limited-edition capsule collection and an extension of the album experience. It’s available for only 24 hours -- most of the pieces are sold out -- and features t-shirts, slides and hoodies with song titles, lyrics and imagery.
Benefiting from the Kardashian Effect
“I don't even be looking at motherf**kers. I don't be looking at s**t,” Scott said to GQ last month about the supposed Kardashian curse. “I'm on my own island. So hey, come over there to Astroworld. I'm not into all the other s**t. I don't get involved. I'm over here. Kylie is different.”
The rapper may be unbothered by his famous other half, but there’s no doubt that being associated with a reality show behemoth has its perks. Association with Kylie Jenner -- the relationship began during Coachella 2017 -- has amped up Scott’s profile over the past year, especially among her millions of fans. This is the first album he’s released post-Kardashian, so to speak.
Jenner has been in heavy promo mode, stanning for her man with the release of Astroworld. Aside from the lovey dovey GQ cover, she’s also shown up at several of his concerts, stars in his video for “Stop Trying to Be God,” and took to Instagram to shout him out just after the set's release. “You didn’t have to go this hard baby. Astroworld just dropped and it’s the craziest ride of my life,” she captioned, while wearing an Astroworld t-shirt. The post has nearly 6 million likes.

A post shared by Kylie (@kyliejenner) on Aug 2, 2018 at 9:35pm PDT
It’s unclear exactly how many Kylie Jenner fans have been converted to Travis Scott fans, or vice versa. However, with 112 million Instagram followers and over 20 million Snapchat followers, Jenner’s pull cannot be denied. And interestingly, two tracks with overt references to the reality star, “Stargazing” and “Sicko Mode,” lead the album in streams on Spotify.
“YO kylie jenner’s boyfriend actually makes fire ass music recommend yall peep,” shared one user on Twitter. Another joked, “astroworld so good imma buy a kylie lip kit lmao.” The family that sells together, stays together.

Travis Scott's 'Astroworld' Bows at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart With Second-Largest Debut of 2018
8/12/2018 by Keith Caulfield
Plus: Mac Miller, YG and Moneybagg Yo debut in the top 10.
Travis Scott’s Astroworld bows atop the Billboard 200 chart with 2018’s second-largest week for an album, earning the rapper his second No. 1.
The set -- which was released Aug. 3 via Cactus Jack/Grand Hustle/Epic Records -- earned 537,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Aug. 9, according to Nielsen Music. Of that total, 270,000 were driven by traditional album sales -- the biggest sales week of 2018.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Aug. 18-dated chart (where Astroworld launches at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, Aug. 14.
Of Astroworld’s total units, 261,000 are SEA units, 6,000 are TEA units, and 270,000 are traditional album sales.
Second-Largest Overall Week of 2018: Scott's amusement park-themed album charges in with 537,000 units earned -- the second-largest week of 2018 for an album. The only set to post a larger frame was Drake’s Scorpion, which started with 732,000 units.
Biggest Sales Week of 2018: Astroworld blows in with 270,000 copies sold -- the largest sales week of the year for an album. The set’s sales were supported by an array of Astroworld-inspired merchandise/album bundles sold via Scott’s official website. The last album to notch a bigger sales week was Taylor Swift’s reputation, which started with 1.2 million copies sold on the Dec. 2, 2017-dated tally. (Astroworld also easily gives Scott his biggest sales week, well beyond his previous high, when 2015’s Rodeo bowed with 70,000 sold.)
Fifth-Largest Streaming Week Ever: Astroworld enters with 261,000 SEA units, which translates to 349.43 million on-demand audio streams earned for its 17 songs during its debut tracking frame. That streaming figure is the fifth-biggest weekly streaming haul for an album. The only larger weeks were posted by the arrivals of Drake’s Scorpion (745.92 million) and Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys (431.3 million), the second week of Scorpion (390.98 million) and the debut frame of Drake’s More Life in 2017 (384.84 million).
Scott’s Second No. 1: Astroworld grants Scott his second No. 1 on the Billboard 200, following his previous release, 2016’s Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight. The latter started with 88,000 units (of which 53,000 were in traditional album sales). Astroworld is Scott’s third chart entry -- he also notched a No. 3-peaking album with his debut studio effort, Rodeo, in 2015.
At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Drake’s Scorpion falls one slot, after spending five straight weeks atop the list. Scorpion earned 117,000 equivalent album units (down 19 percent).
Mac Miller’s Swimming arrives at No. 3 with 66,000 units (of which 30,000 were in traditional album sales), garnering the hip-hop artist his fifth consecutive top five-charting release. His last album, The Divine Feminine, debuted and peaked at No. 2 in 2016 with 48,000 units earned (32,000 of what sum were album sales).
Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys falls one rung to No. 4 with 58,000 units (down 7 percent). The album has yet to depart the top four in its 15 weeks on the list.
At No. 5, YG notches his third top 10 effort, as Stay Dangerous bows with 56,000 units (11,000 in traditional album sales). He previously visited the top 10 with 2016’s Still Brazy (No. 6) and 2014’s My Krazy Life (No. 2).
Juice WRLD’s Goodbye & Good Riddance falls 4-6 with 38,000 units (down 3 percent), Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy descends 5-7 with 35,000 units (down 8 percent) and XXXTentacion’s ? moves 6-8 with 33,000 units (down 13 percent).
Hip-hop dominates the top 10, as, for the first time, the entire top eight titles are all hip-hop sets. That beats the previous hot streak, when the top six were locked down by hip-hop on the July 21-dated tally (which was then replicated on the July 28 and Aug. 11-dated lists).
Closing out the Billboard 200’s new top 10 are the highest ranking non-hip-hop sets on the tally: the soundtracks to Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (moving 7-9 with 28,000 units; down 27 percent) and The Greatest Showman (9-10 with 25,000 units; down 9 percent).

I'd like to know what all of this "array of Astroworld-inspired merchandise/album bundles" encompassed, and what percentage of total album sales it accounted for.

Scorpion only 117k? Nicki should beat that next week and possibly Astroworld too as its sales will probably collapse.

Hopefully... but as of right now Astroworld is still dominating both Apple Music and Spotify, so Nicki has to rely on iTunes since she has no physicals out. And whether her tour bundle will count for this week.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: 'Hamilton' Cast Album Hits 150 Weeks on Chart News By Keith Caulfield | August 17, 2018 8:23 PM EDT
It's one of only four cast albums in the past 50 years to spend 150 weeks on the chart. On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Aug. 18), Travis Scott’s Astroworld launched at No. 1 with 2018’s second-largest week for an album, as it bowed with 537,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Aug. 9, according to Nielsen Music.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:
— The original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton: An American Musical reaches a landmark of longevity on the list, as it spends a 150th week on the chart.
In the last 50 years, only three other cast albums have spent at least 150 weeks on the tally: the highlights edition of the original London cast recording of The Phantom of the Opera (331 weeks between 1990 and 1996), the full original London cast recording of Phantom (255 weeks between 1987 and 1993) and the original Broadway cast recording of Hair (151 weeks between 1968 and 1971).
Hamilton has never ranked lower than No. 60 in its 150 weeks on the list and has spent the past 132 weeks lodged in the top 40. It peaked at No. 3 on the tally dated July 2, 2016.
Through Aug. 9, the album has earned 3.34 million equivalent album units, of which 1.6 million are in traditional album sales. The set has generated 2.23 billion on-demand audio streams for its tracks.
— Various Artists, Now 67 – No. 19 — The Now That’s What I Call Music series continues to churn out chart hits, as the line’s latest compilation, Now 67, bows at No. 19 with 19,000 units (all from traditional album sales). Now 67 is the 82nd Now compilation to reach the top 20.
— Bazzi, Cosmic – No. 30 — The album rebounds 52-30 (15,000 units; up 32 percent) thanks to interest generated by a newly released remix of the set’s “Beautiful,” now featuring Camila Cabello.
— Iggy Azalea, Survive the Summer (EP) – No. 144 — Iggy Azalea returns with her third chart entry, and first new arrival on the list since 2014, as the Survive the Summer EP starts at No. 144 (6,000 units). She previously charted with Reclassified (which debuted on the chart in Dec. 2014, but peaked at No. 16 on the Jan. 17, 2015-dated list) and The New Classic (debuting and peaking at No. 3 on May 10, 2014).
