I still seek new music regularly. It might not be music released by successful artists but it’s new music.

I know this thread has died down but I got a kick out of the article and the responses. I'm 35 and this absolutely applies to me. And I'm a music industry professional! I'm a classical opera singer and I've made a fine living all these years from music and yet, in the last several, I find myself woefully out of touch. When I do force myself to listen to something other than my records and playlists I find myself uttering phrases like, "Kids these days..." So yeah, count me among those who thinks new music needs to get off my lawn.

My dad really doesn't check for new music at all, he basically only listens to 60s-70s stuff. I'm struggling to even thing of 80s music that he might listen to and he was born in 1965. I think he's recently discovered James Brown's music though... My mom was also born in 1965 and listens to mostly 70s-90s music but she has bought albums from artists that only broke through in the last 2 decades.
Dido Santana (well they weren't big in the 80s so she only heard of them with their come-back around 2000) Coldplay Adele Amy Winehouse Feist Of Monsters and Men Arcade Fire Los Pinguos kinda likes Lady Gaga and Michael Buble too but I'm not sure if she bought anything for them
She doesn't stream or listen to mainstream radio though, so it's not a surprise she doesn't discover much new music. Coldplay was from looking for music on iTunes to get me as a present when I was in middle school. Los Pinguos was kind of random, they had a concert at the local community theatre. The rest I think were from listening to Canadian public radio (CBC).

I think by being on here that we're more the exception than the rule.
I know some people my age on other boards and in real life and can argue that this is true. But to be honest, this isn't the case with me.
If I had stopped listening to new music in 2003 (when I'd be 30), I would probably had never heard of Adele, Taylor Swift, Cardi B, Bishop Briggs, Halestorm, Maren Morris or a bunch of artists that started making music after that year.
I swear that new music is one of the things that keeps me feeling (fairly) young.

I'm 32 and still check for new music.....Hip Hop and R&B are both sounding more progressive than the cookie cutter crap you hear in other genres. The fact that I'm saying this as a Hip Hop fan should tell you how formulaic the industry has become. Lol.....we never stop looking for new, exciting music....we just get tired of garbage being shoved down our throats.

I think it all depends on preference; at 27 I enjoy finding new music, but as the rap genre is currently dominating the scene I am very hesitant to get to know all the songs as it sounds like garbage to my ears. I thoroughly enjoyed the 2010-2016 age where there were monster pop and hac hits.
