Ariana Grande's 'Sweetener' Album Aiming for No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart

Ariana Grande is on track for her third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, according to industry forecasters. Those in the know suggest her fourth studio effort, Sweetener, could bow atop the tally next week with over 200,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Aug. 23. The set was released on Aug. 17 via Republic Records.


Grande previously led the list with her debut set Yours Truly, in 2013, and its follow-up, My Everything, in 2014. Her third studio release, Dangerous Woman, debuted and peaked at No. 2 in 2016.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the Sept. 1-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Sweetener may bow at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, Aug. 26.


Could anything block Sweetener from a No. 1 debut? Perhaps Travis Scott’s current leader, Astroworld, will hold tight at No. 1 for a third week? That it seems unlikely, as it earned 205,000 units in the week ending Aug. 16, according to Nielsen Music — down 62 percent from its opening frame of 537,000 units. Thus, for Astroworld to hold at No. 1, it would have to gain in its third week, which would be quite unusual.


Then there is the late Aretha Franklin, whose 30 Greatest Hits re-entered the Aug. 25-dated chart at No. 7 — and only from one day’s worth of reaction to her death on Aug. 16. (The tracking week for the Aug. 25 chart ended on the 16th.) While Hits probably won’t pose a threat for No. 1, the album could hold on to a rank in the top 10 for a second stanza.


If Grande’s Sweetener starts at No. 1, it will grant her label, Republic Records, its fourth chart-topper of the year. It would follow Drake’s Scorpion (released on Young Money/Cash Money/Republic), Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys (Republic) and The Weeknd’s My Dear Melancholy (XO/Republic).

Ariana Grande earns her third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as her fourth full-length studio effort, Sweetener, enters atop the tally. The set, which was released on Aug. 17 via Republic Records, starts with 231,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Aug. 23, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 127,000 are from traditional album sales.

Grande’s Third No. 1: Sweetener is Grande’s third leader on the Billboard 200, following the chart-topping debuts of her second album, My Everything (Sept. 13, 2014), and her debut effort, Yours Truly (Sept. 21, 2013). Of her four full-length studio sets, only her third release, Dangerous Woman, missed the top. It debuted and peaked at No. 2 on June 11, 2016 (stuck behind Grande’s labelmate, Drake, with his blockbuster album Views, which was in its fourth of 14 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1).

‘Sweetener’ Surpasses ‘Dangerous’: With Sweetener’s start of 231,000 units, it beats the bow of Grande’s last album, Dangerous Woman. The latter entered the chart at No. 2 with 175,000 units.

Second Biggest Week of 2018 for a Woman: Sweetener secures the second-largest week for an album by a woman in 2018. Only Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy launched with a larger figure: 255,000 units (No. 1, April 21-dated chart). Thus, Sweetener also has the biggest week for a pop album by a woman. Largest Streaming Week Ever for a Pop Album by a Woman: Sweetener’s songs collected 126.7 million on-demand audio streams in its debut frame -- the largest streaming week for a pop album by a woman. It’s also the biggest streaming week for any non-hip-hop effort by a woman. Sweetener is the rare pop album that performed strongly on streaming services -- generally rap albums post big streaming numbers in comparison to other genres.

Of the 41 instances where there was an album that collected more than 125 million streams in a single week, only four were not rap titles. Aside from Sweetener, there were also the debut frames of Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) (134.6 million), The Weeknd’s My Dear Melancholy (140.8 million), and The Weeknd’s Starboy (175.2 million).

At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Travis Scott’s Astroworld slips to the runner-up slot after spending its first two weeks at No. 1. The album earned 110,000 units in the latest tracking week, down 46 percent.

Nicki Minaj’s Queen moves 2-3 in its second week, with 95,000 units (down 49 percent).

Drake’s Scorpion moves 3-4 (93,000 units; down 9 percent)

while Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys is steady at No. 5 (57,000 units; up 2 percent).

Aretha Franklin’s 30 Greatest Hits climbs 7-6, granting the diva her highest-charting album in 50 years. 30 Greatest Hits ascends with 52,000 units earned in the tracking week (up 49 percent), with 18,000 of that sum coming from traditional album sales (up 47 percent).

30 Greatest Hits is Franklin’s highest charting album since the Aug. 31, 1968-dated list, when Aretha Now was at No. 4, after previously peaking at No. 3 (Aug. 17 and 24).

30 Greatest Hits rises after the set experiences its first full chart week of activity following Franklin’s death on Aug. 16. A week ago, the album re-entered the list at No. 7, effectively from one day of impact after her passing (as the chart’s tracking week ended on Aug. 16).

One step below Franklin on the new chart is Cole Swindell’s All of It, which debuts at No. 7 with 50,000 units (39,000 in traditional album sales). It’s the country singer’s third top 10 effort, following You Should Be Here (No. 6; May 28, 2016) and his self-titled debut (No. 3; March 8, 2014).

The various artists compilation Young Stoner Life: Slime Language debuts at No. 8 with 41,000 units, mostly derived from streaming activity (38,000 of its units are streaming equivalent album units). It’s the second compilation to reach the top 10 in 2018, following the Now 65 compilation, which debuted and peaked at No. 10 on the Feb. 17-dated list.

Closing out the new top 10 are Juice WRLD’s Goodbye & Good Riddance (6-9 with 41,000 units; up 4 percent)

and Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy (8-10 with 34,000 units; up 2 percent).

30 Greatest Hits was released in 1985 but did not chart until 2012, when it spent two weeks on the list (then-peaking at No. 117). It then returned to the tally a week ago on the chart dated Aug. 25.

Republic Records Lands Four of the Top Five Albums on the Billboard 200 Chart

It’s the first time one label has four of the top five since 2010.

Republic Records has reason to celebrate, as the label has four of the top five albums on the new Billboard 200 albums chart -- the first time a label has achieved the feat since 2010.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Sept. 1-dated chart (where Republic rules with four in the top five) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, Aug. 28.

Republic is at No. 1 with Ariana Grande’s arriving Sweetener, followed by Nicki Minaj’s Queen at No. 3 (released on Young Money/Cash Money through Republic), Drake’s Scorpion (Young Money/Cash Money/Republic) at No. 4 and Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys (Republic) at No. 5. (The one non-Republic title in the top five: Travis Scott's Astroworld at No. 2, released via Cactus Jack/Grand Hustle/Epic Records.)

The last label to claim four albums among the top five was Columbia Records, on the list dated Dec. 18, 2010, when the label -- as part of what was then known as the Sony Music Label Group -- controlled Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 5. That week, Susan Boyle’s The Gift (SYCO/Columbia/Sony Music) led the list. Taylor Swift’s Speak Now (Big Machine) was No. 2. Then, Columbia picked up again at Nos. 3-5 with Jackie Evancho’s O Holy Night (SYCO/Columbia/Sony Music) and a pair of Glee soundtracks: Glee: The Music – The Christmas Album (20th Century Fox/Columbia/Sony Music) and Glee: The Music – Season Two: Volume 4 (20th Century Fox/Columbia/Sony Music).

Sony Music Label Group combined the previously separate Columbia Records and Epic Records’ sales and distribution departments into one entity. The group launched after the Sony/BMG merger in 2004. Eventually, Sony Music Label Group morphed into the Columbia/Epic Label Group and then dissolved in 2011, letting the two labels stand alone once again.

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Sept. 1), Ariana Grande grabbed her third No. 1, as Sweetener started atop the list. The effort, which is her fourth full-length studio album, bows in the penthouse with 231,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Aug. 23, according to Nielsen Music.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

— Eagles, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 – No. 60 — The album jumps up the list (125-60) following news of the title being certified 38-times platinum in the U.S. by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) — and surpassing Michael Jackson’s Thriller as the highest-certified album of all time.

Their Greatest Hits has now earned 38 million album units in the U.S., according to the RIAA. Each platinum certification is equal to 1 million album units. Their Greatest Hits was re-certified on Aug. 20, bringing its certification up from 29 million to 38 million.

As for Thriller, it was last certified on Feb. 16, 2017, when it was upgraded from 32 million to 33 million.

For the RIAA, one album unit is equal to one album sale, or 10 tracks sold from an album, or 1,500 on-demand audio and/or video streams from an album. The RIAA revamped its Gold & Platinum Awards Program on Feb. 1, 2016, growing from a pure album sales certification process to one that includes tracks and streams. The RIAA and Nielsen Music differ in how they tabulate album units. For Nielsen Music, and thus Billboard’s album consumption charts (as Nielsen's data powers Billboard's album charts), one equivalent album unit is equal to one traditional album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 1,250 paid subscription on-demand audio song streams from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported on-demand audio song streams from an album.

Back on the Billboard 200, Their Greatest Hits earned 10,000 units in the week ending Aug. 23 (up 55 percent) according to Nielsen Music, with 4,000 of that sum coming from traditional album sales (up 250 percent).

— Michael Jackson, Thriller – No. 135 — And, as for the King of Pop, his former No. 1 album Thriller jumps back onto the tally at No. 135 — its first visit to the list since May 19, and highest rank since April 7 (when it also placed at No. 135). Thriller earned 7,000 units in the week ending Aug. 23 (up 330 percent), with 2,000 of that sum from traditional album sales (up 30 percent).

— Original Broadway Cast Recording, Hamilton: An American Musical – No. 30 — As the set spends its 152nd week on the tally, it logs the third-longest run on the list among cast albums in the last 50 years. It steps past the original Broadway Cast Recording of Hair, which garnered 151 weeks on the list between 1968 and 1971. Only two albums have spent more time on the chart in the past 50 years than Hamilton: the highlights edition of the original London cast recording of The Phantom of the Opera (331 weeks between 1990 and 1996) and the full original London cast recording of Phantom (255 weeks between 1987 and 1993).

— Sam Hunt, Montevallo – No. 119 — The album nabs its 200th consecutive week on the list, dating back to its debut frame on the list dated Nov. 15, 2014, where the set bowed and peaked at No. 3. Montevallo is just the ninth country album to log at least 200 weeks on the Billboard 200. The others: Zac Brown Band’s The Foundation (294 weeks), Taylor Swift’s self-titled album (275), Florida Georgia Line’s Here’s to the Good Times (259), Swift’s Fearless (255), Luke Bryan’s Crash My Party (232), Garth Brooks’ No Fences (224) and his self-titled effort (224), and Bryan’s Tailgates and Tanlines (214).

— Neil Diamond, Hot August Night III: Recorded Live at the Greek Theatre, Los Angeles – No. 144 — The pop icon earns his 56th entry on the chart, as his new live album starts at No. 144 (6,000 units; nearly all from traditional album sales). Hot August Night III is Diamond’s fourth entry in his series of Hot August Night live albums, which started with 1972’s Hot August Night. The first set peaked at No. 5 on the chart dated Feb. 17, 1973 and spent 78 weeks on the list. He then followed it with Hot August Night II (No. 59; Jan. 9, 1988), Hot August Night/NYC: Live From Madison Square Garden (No. 2; Aug. 29, 2009) and the new Hot August Night III.

I think Post Malone is easily bigger right now, but you're right that he could fade out quickly like Fetty Wap for example which would make Ariana bigger overall. I don't think he will though.

Why are you guys comparing Post to one-trick pony one-hit wonders from years ago? He already has 2 smash albums, multiple huge hits and is actually talented and versatile as an artist. He's here to stay.
