Luke Bryan Lands 20th Country Airplay No. 1, And 13th in a Row, With 'Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset'
News
By Gary Trust | September 11, 2018 10:29 AM EDT
"There has never been a time when getting a song to the top of the charts gets old," Bryan says.
Luke Bryan becomes the ninth artist to have tallied at least 20 No. 1s on Billboard's Country Airplay chart (out of nearly a thousand acts that have appeared on the survey since its January 1990 inception), as "Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset" ascends 2-1 on the survey dated Sept. 15.
The track reigns with a 6 percent gain to 44.3 million audience impressions in the tracking week ending Sept. 9, according to Nielsen Music.
"I promise you there has never been, and will never be, a time when getting a song to the top of the charts gets old," Bryan tells Billboard. "I'm grateful for each one. 'Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset' is a perfect, reflective song about young summer love. I knew it was special the first time I heard it, and it's so fun watching the fans react to it on tour."
Zach Crowell, Ryan Hurd and Chase McGill wrote "Sunrise," which Jeff Stevens and Jody Stevens produced.
Kenny Chesney leads with 30 Country Airplay No. 1s, followed by Tim McGraw (29), Alan Jackson and George Strait (26 each), Blake Shelton (25), Keith Urban (21) and Brooks & Dunn and Toby Keith (20 each). Next in line aiming to join the exclusive club: Jason Aldean, Garth Brooks and Brad Paisley, who each have 19.
"Sunrise" is additionally Bryan's 13th Country Airplay leader in a row, extending the longest active streak among all artists (as a lead act and counting singles promoted to country radio, excluding holiday fare). Since "Drink a Beer" led for two weeks beginning Feb. 15, 2014, none of Bryan's lead singles have missed the pinnacle. (During that run, Florida Georgia Line's "This Is How We Roll," featuring Bryan, peaked at No. 2 in May 2014.) Thomas Rhett owns the second-longest active No. 1s streak: five.
"Sunrise" is the third single, and third Country Airplay No. 1, from Bryan's album What Makes You Country, following "Light It Up," which topped the Dec. 23, 2017-dated chart, and second single "Most People Are Good," which led for three weeks beginning March 31. Bryan is the sixth artist with a pair of No. 1s in 2018 (during which 25 songs have topped the chart), joining Aldean, Chesney, Florida Georgia Line, Rhett and Brett Young.
On the Hot Country Songs chart, which blends airplay, streaming and sales data, "Sunrise" hits a new high (5-4). It holds at No. 8 on Country Digital Song Sales with 7,000 downloads sold (down 3 percent), while having drawn 4.6 million U.S. streams (down 8 percent) in the tracking week ending Sept. 6.
Bryan, who wrapped his first season as a judge on ABC's rebooted American Idol in May, first crowned Country Airplay with "Rain Is a Good Thing" (his sixth entry) for two weeks in July 2010.
STILL CAN'T 'BE' BEAT: Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line's "Meant to Be" paces Hot Country Songs for a record-extending 41st week. The collaboration leads Country Streaming Songs for a record-padding 37th frame (13 million U.S. streams, down 8 percent).
YOUNG'S 14TH TOP 10: Chris Young collects his 14th Country Airplay top 10, as "Hangin' On" rises 11-9. The song climbs with an 11 percent increase to 23.6 million in audience.
Young is seeking his fifth consecutive Country Airplay No. 1 (excluding a charted holiday track), following "Losing Sleep" (Feb. 10); "Sober Saturday Night," featuring Vince Gill (March 18, 2017); "Think of You," with Cassadee Pope (May 14, 2016); and "I'm Comin' Over" (three weeks beginning Nov. 28, 2015).
All 13 of Young's prior Country Airplay top 10s reached the top five, with nine hitting No. 1. He first ranked in the top tier with "Gettin' You Home," which led the Oct. 24, 2009-dated list.

With country it seems getting an AirPlay #1 is more important than a #1 on the overall country chart.

Airplay was the basis for the overall country chart up through 2012
Nowadays, The overall country chart - TECHNICALLY is not a country chart
Meant To Be has country elements, contains a country artist but is popular across multiple formats and being purchased and streamed by non country listeners.
But has been the recognized "Hot Country Song" for 41 weeks

'Meant to Be' rankings
#26 Hot 100 #38 Streaming #16 Radio Songs #49 Digital Songs
#1 Hot Country Songs #6 Adult Top 40 recurrent #13 Pop recurrent #5 Adult Contemporary #9 Country recurrent airplay #1 Country streaming #9 Country digital
As it has gone recurrent in most formats, it seems to be sticking around as #1 for streaming and multi format airplay (as it has gone recurrent everywhere but AC - makes little sense)

With Country airplay though I noticed huge Country artists always have these insane streaks there.
As that article points out, Luke has 13 consecutive #1's on Country Radio. I've seen articles where artists got their 30th consecutive top 10 on Country Radio, or artists who have careers spanning decades and never had a single miss top 10 on Country Radio.
Correct me if wrong, but it seems Country radio for the most part doesn't really pay attention to callout scores and listener demand like a format such as Top 40/Urban/etc. Big artists on the Country format can practically never flop with a single.
I don't think its payola like I've seen some suggest, but moreso labels have strong politics/chokehold with Country radio. To the point where they just tell them a big Country artist is releasing a new single and then all stations automatically hop on it lol.
Also 90% of Country radio #1's only spend 1-2 weeks #1. It's like radio retires a song from the top once it gets there, even if theoretically, the country listeners could still be absolutely loving the song more than any other song.

Yeah, I think people use "payola" in a blanket type of way, or very loosely. There's definitely something to it, and politics/chokehold is maybe a better way to describe it vs. something that is illegal. People may not often think of radio and labels as being part of the same machine - but they are - they scratch one another's backs because it's mutually beneficial.

I'm guessing that once Soundscan came... they just kept on with the label-influence and it still continues til this day. Similar to how Hot 100 obviously had some label-influence during the period before Soundscan, but they backed off once Soundscan came. I imagine it must take so much more effort to keep up with this label-game then rather just play with listeners want though....

I imagine it must take so much more effort to keep up with this label-game then rather just play with listeners want though.... Depending on how you look at it. Having everything pre-programmed is ultimately easier to manage/control, and far more financially sound. From my experience in CHR radio, it's a freaking science. Every second of airtime is claimed real estate, and everything that seems listener-based on the air is faked, or somehow worked into what's already there. Programmers use callout scores and requests to decide which songs to ease up on to make room for what the label is wanting them to push, etc - it's all very transactional. I remember my first radio gig in the 90s when I was filling in for the night guy, and I realized that the nightly "top 9 and 9" request show was preprogrammed with zero actual requests/voting considered. Same goes for the "new music face offs". The results/winners are already decided and programmed. It's all quite ironic when you consider how radio touts itself as being about the listeners, interaction, requests, etc. It's really just a series of transactions between executives in their offices, while the listeners are made to believe it's all about them. They're really just a number to ensure advertisers continue to buy airtime.

Taylor Swift's 'Delicate' Hits No. 1 on Adult Contemporary Chart
News
By Gary Trust | September 11, 2018 1:11 PM EDT Taylor Swift
Swift scores her seventh AC leader & first since "Style" in 2015.
"Delicate," the fourth radio single from Taylor Swift's 2017 album reputation, becomes the set's first No. 1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary airplay chart, where the song ascends 4-1 (on the list dated Sept. 15).
The song is Swift's seventh total AC No. 1 and first since "Style," from her prior LP, 1989, in July 2015.
Swift's seven AC leaders are the most among all acts since she first reigned with "Love Story" on June 6, 2009; Adele ranks second with five No. 1s in that span, followed by P!nk, with four.
The Adult Contemporary chart measures total weekly plays among its reporting panel of 87 AC stations.
"Delicate" likewise became reputation's first No. 1 on the Adult Pop Songs airplay survey for four weeks in July. The track crowned the Pop Songs airplay chart dated July 28, marking the set's second No. 1; lead single "Look What You Made Me Do" topped the Oct. 28, 2017-dated ranking.

Eminem's 'Lucky You' Marks Rapper's First No. 1 Debut on Streaming Songs Chart News By Kevin Rutherford | September 12, 2018 5:01 PM EDT
The rapper previously ruled the chart with “The Monster,” featuring Rihanna, in 2014.
Eminem’s new album Kamikaze storms Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart, led by “Lucky You,” featuring Joyner Lucas, which bows at No. 1 on the Sept. 15-dated list. “Lucky” is the rapper’s second leader on the chart, which began in 2013, and first since “The Monster,” featuring Rihanna, which led for one week in January 2014. The track earns 42.2 million streams in the week ending Sept. 6, according to Nielsen Music, and is the rapper’s first to debut atop the tally.
In total, four songs from Kamikaze debut in the top 10 of Streaming Songs, with “Lucky” followed by “The Ringer” (No. 5, 31.7 million), “Fall” (No. 7, 31.8 million) and the title track (No. 8, 26.2 million). Notably, “Ringer” leads “Fall” despite more streams for the latter due to weighting changes on the chart that value paid streams over ad-supported; a portion of “Fall’s” data comes from a YouTube video released Sept. 4.
Eminem had never debuted inside the top 10 of Streaming Songs with any song previously, his closest being the No. 11 start and peak of “Headlights,” featuring Nate Ruess, in May 2014. “Lucky” is the seventh song to debut atop Streaming Songs in 2018 and the first since Drake’s “Nonstop,” which bowed atop the ranking on the July 14-dated list. Eminem joins Kanye West, Childish Gambino, Bruno Mars and Cardi B as the other artists to do so this year.
Additionally, “Lucky” leads the On-Demand Streaming Songs ranking, which tracks on-demand audio streams only, with 31 million streams coming via those services. It’s again Eminem’s first No. 1 debut and his first No. 1 since “Monster” (six weeks, November 2013).
