For some reason, in my recent research on the fact that music video channels still exist in 2021, I thought the fact that they're a niche on extended cable would mean less censorship of videos, but MTV still blurs out breast-feeding in the Mother's Daughter video and reverses the words "naked" and "far gone" (because some people think it says "fucked on", which doesn't even make sense) in Dominic Fike's 3 Nights.
Over on NickMusic it's even worse, with Not Another Love Song's chorus being changed to "I love the way you *echo* way you to me".

iHeart's kid-friendly edit of Sabrina Carpenter's Skin:
You can try to get under my, under my, under my skin While you can try to get under my, under my, under my skin
Worth noting I let out an out-loud "oh no no no no oh god no" when I heard this.

I argue this is actually slightly better because it removes the petty line about how she's all over Joshua lol.

They are playing that on iHeartRadio for kids? I don't know about everyone else, but I don't think that specific song is suitable for kids that young. (sidebar: I just sounded like my mom when I said that).

They are playing that on iHeartRadio for kids? I don't know about everyone else, but I don't think that specific song is suitable for kids that young. (sidebar: I just sounded like my mom when I said that). iHeart's standards for their "junior" app and radio stations are literally "Is this editable and still semi-coherent?" rather than "Is the subject matter really appropriate for kids?". They'll play SICKO MODE, Unforgettable, Laugh Now Cry Later, Good As Hell Good As Good, etc. Even Billie Eilish's "all the good girls go to hell" got played for the kids while it was charting (with the last word in the title muted, though the title was still clearly visible on whatever station's info was playing it). The only hard standards seem to be no swearing, no guns, no references to drugs/alcohol of any kind, even metaphorical. Selena Gomez's "Kill 'Em With Kindness"? "Your lies are [silence]/your mouth's a [silence]". I also heard an edit of Flo Rida's "Wild Ones" on "Kids Club Radio" which censored all the alcohol references but not "Tear up that body, dominate you 'til you've had enough". Of course, the bigger issue is that sometimes iHeart, accidentally or not, sends their ridiculous kid-friendly edits to their regular affiliates or they end up on AT40. I remember someone being confused that "bars" was censored in Sucker on AT40 while it was charting - seems like they were sent the kid edit.

Doja Cat's "Ain't Shit" was left off the clean version of Planet Her, but since it's charting in the UK BBC Radio 1 attempted to play it and... well, listen for yourself. It legit sounds like she says "Nuggets ain't shish" the second time it's said.

The "super clean" edit of Lil Nas X / Jack Harlow's "Industry Baby" that a lot of stations play is awful. Part of Lil Nas X's first verse is so censored that it's just him saying random phrases over the instrumental.
Tell a rap ____ , "I don't see ya" I'm a pop ___ like Bieber I don't ____, I'm _____ But these _______ Madea
And yes, they bleeped him saying "I'm queer," which seems super offensive. The whole point of censorship is to not expose children (or otherwise sensitive people, I guess) to vulgar language, so they're basically saying that being queer is too vulgar for children. I realize the word has been used in an offensive way in the past, but it's been reclaimed by the queer community, and even if it weren't fully, he's obviously saying it to be empowering in this case. There's just no reason for it to be censored.

My big CHR station plays Industry Baby with "queer" censored but keeps "shit" in Beggin' and Skate.

For some reason I heard a version of Post Malone's "Goodbyes" that censors out the phrase "It's Nicki Minaj." Why lol?

For some reason I heard a version of Post Malone's "Goodbyes" that censors out the phrase "It's Nicki Minaj." Why lol? This was the first clean version that was on Spotify and presumably sent to radio originally - "You're popping life doll - doll..."
It later got replaced with a version that didn't censor that line but censored "cut", "knife", and "slice". Not the first time I've seen a clean version changed - when Peaches was newer the clean version on Spotify left in "weed", but was later censored as the song exploded on radio. Wonder which version is on Justin's actual album.

I just heard the AT40 version of Saweetie's "My Type" over the weekend, and my lawd, there's more instrumental than her actually rapping because so much is censored out lol. It's basically her just saying a random word every five seconds and then silence. The hook being the worst offense: "8................that's the................imma.............all night" I'm not even exaggerating, that's literally how it's censored and how most of the song sounds lmao. There's an edit of this I heard the other day that changes the "8-inch dick" line to "8-inch bagel" (?!?). Seems like some medical attention might be required if that comparison is accurate lol.

I think the lyric (in both the explicit and clean versions) is "8-inch big, uh." I like your version better, though! Also, LMAO @ that "Ain't s**t" edit. Why would you even air that?

It's corny, I know, but it works melodically and doesn't change the meaning of the rest of the song. It definitely wasn't as impossible a task as the likes of Eminem's "Kim" or Janet's "Would You Mind", where leaving them off the clean version altogether was basically the only choice.

Even in 2021, some Christian stations STILL remove rap sections from the few Christian hits that actually have one. It's like they still have that boomer mindset that any form of rap is inherently evil or something

iHeartRadio's "family" edit of You Right (I mean we could just not play a song with this subject matter on affiliates that include Build-a-Bear Radio but you do you I guess):
And it's me and you, no she Tryna be all through your sheets Have you all on top on me Actin' like it's not that deep Oh, you could take it out on me

Radio completely ruined Supalonely, I believe that song was gonna be a huge hit but the swearing really hindered its success because pop radio decided to frankenstein a censored version that ruins the whole chorus.

NickMusic is playing Nessa Barrett's "i hope ur miserable until ur d***", and iHeart's kids affilates are playing it as "I hope you're miserable until you're til you're".
Play a different song.
There's also gibberish edit of The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber's "Stay" which was made for iHeart's kids' stations but I've heard on the regular adult-oriented Hit Nation affilates:
"I get like, can't feel the way I feel I realize the time that I wasted here I feel like you can't feel the way I feel I'll be... if you can't be right here"

I heard an edit of Ariana Grande's "Into You" which mutes the phrase "touch my body" from the lyric "A little less conversation and a little more touch my body." Maybe it was the kids edit, but still, the censorship there is a little much lol.

The big pop station here was playing the album clean version for "Need to Know", but recently switched to an edit that censors "sexual", "ride", "ass" (the first time but not the second?), "erection", and "spank me, slap me, choke me".
This was a song that I figured was going to get butchered in some markets if it did well enough.

I've heard this edit as well (I have a station that plays the "super clean" version you mentioned, and another station by me that does the album clean one). Honestly, I was a bit surprised the other version didn't censor the "choke me" lyric, since imo that's a bit intense for kids to hear (which is technically why stuff on the radio has to be censored in the first place). The distortion of "sex" / "sexual" seems a bit much though, as the song is pretty much pure lust and just distorting "sex" isn't going to cover that up lol.

The song just radiates so much sexual energy that no amount of censoring is gonna hide it

The “forget” edit of “abcdefu” just makes the whole song pointless. I’m glad the station I listen to plays the version where it just replaces the word with “F.”

The clean version of Schoolboy Q's verse in "2 On" by Tinashe is ridiculous. Nearly every other word is distorted due to either being sexually graphic or a drug reference (oddly "drunk" is censored too). In many cases, full phrases have to be censored making the verse completely unable to be understood, the most comical example being the fact that the only word not censored in his first line is "uh" lol. This YouTube comment on the clean version sums it up pretty well lmao.

When White Walls was charting there were two different edits I heard:
On the St. Joseph pop station:
Backwoods and dope White [distorted 'hoes'] in the backseat snorting coke She doing line after line like she writing rhymes
On the KC pop station:
Backwoods and... White ---- in the backseat... ...Like she writing rhymes

Which version of Taio Cruz's 'Dirty Picture' (featuring Ke$ha) did you guys hear on the radio? The original version has nothing that hasn't been heard in a hundred other radio hits here; the official clean version that changes it to 'won't you take a picture' and 'take a, take a picture' was made with the UK's strict pre-watershed standards in mind, but I could see a radio station in the US erring on the side of the caution to avoid complaints about glamorizing sexting.
Also, I can confirm iHeart's kid stations are playing The Chainsmokers' "High". "Why? You only say you love me when you're whyyyy?"
