Carrie Underwood's 'Cry Pretty' on Course For No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200 Albums Chart
9/17/2018 by Keith Caulfield
Randee St. Nicholas Carrie Underwood
Carrie Underwood is on course for her fourth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as her latest release, Cry Pretty, may debut atop the tally next week. According to industry forecasters, the album, which was released on Sept. 14 via Capitol Nashville, could launch with over 210,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Sept. 20.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the Sept. 29-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Cry Pretty should debut at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, Sept. 23.
Cry Pretty is Underwood’s first album for Capitol Nashville, after a career with Sony Music’s Arista Nashville. Underwood previously topped the Billboard 200 with Blown Away (2012), Play On (2009) and Carnival Ride (2007).
If Cry Pretty launches as expected, it will secure the largest week for a country album in 2018. Currently, the biggest week for a country set this year is owned by Jason Aldean’s Rearview Town, which debuted at No. 1 with 183,000 units earned, according to Nielsen Music (chart dated April 28).
Also heading for a top 10 debut next week is 6LACK’s second studio album East Atlanta Love Letter, which could start in the region with 70,000 units. His debut set, FREE 6LACK, peaked at No. 34 in 2017.

Carrie Underwood Makes Country History on the Billboard 200 Chart As 'Cry Pretty' Debuts at No. 1 9/23/2018 by Keith Caulfield
The set launches with the biggest week of the year for a woman, and the largest for a country album in more than three years.
Carrie Underwood lands her fourth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as Cry Pretty starts atop the list. The set, which was released on Sept. 14 via Capitol Nashville, bows with 266,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Sept. 20 according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 251,000 were in traditional album sales.
With the arrival at No. 1, Underwood makes country history: she's the first woman to bring four country albums to the top of the all-genre Billboard 200 chart.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Sept. 29-dated chart (where Cry Pretty debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, Sept. 25. Of Cry Pretty’s 266,000 units, most were in album sales: 251,000, as noted above. The remainder was comprised of SEA units (11,000) and TEA units (4,000).
First Woman to Take Four Country Albums to No. 1 on Billboard 200: Underwood is the first woman to hit the top of the Billboard 200 chart with four country albums: Cry Pretty, Blown Away (2012), Play On (2009) and Carnival Ride (2007). Previously, she was tied with Faith Hill, Linda Ronstadt and Taylor Swift with three leaders each. (Swift has had five No. 1s on the Billboard 200, but only three of them also charted on the Top Country Albums chart, as her two most recent leaders -- reputation and 1989 -- were pop efforts.) Among all acts, Garth Brooks has brought the most country albums to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with nine leaders in his career.
Biggest Week for a Country Album in More Than Three Years: Cry Pretty’s launch of 266,000 units is the biggest for any country album since Aug. 29, 2015, when Luke Bryan’s Kill the Lights bowed at No. 1 with 345,000 units earned. Cry Pretty logs the biggest overall week for a country album by a woman since the charts began ranking albums by equivalent album units in late 2014. 2018’s Largest Week for a Woman: Cry Pretty’s debut frame of 266,000 units is the biggest week for any album by a woman in 2018, surpassing the previous high-water mark, set by Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy, which launched at No. 1 with 255,000 units (April 21 chart). The last larger stanza for an album by a woman was racked up on the Dec. 2, 2017-dated list, when Taylor Swift’s reputation entered at No. 1 with 1.238 million units.
2018’s Biggest Sales Week for a Woman & Country Album: Cry Pretty clocks the largest sales frame for an album by a woman since Swift’s reputation bowed last year (1.216 million sold in its first week, Dec. 2, 2017). Further, Cry Pretty snags the biggest for a country album in more than three years, since Bryan’s Kill the Lights debuted with 320,000 copies sold. Further, Cry Pretty nabs the largest sales week for a country album by a female artist since the Jan. 5, 2013-dated list, when Taylor Swift's Red sold 276,000 copies in its ninth week on the list.
Underwood supported the album’s first-week with interviews and performances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (Sept. 13) and The Ellen DeGeneres Show (Sept. 19) as well as an interview on CBS’ Sunday Morning (Sept. 16).
Cry Pretty’s sizable first-week was supported by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer, as well as sturdy sales via sellers like Target, Walmart, the iTunes Store and so forth.
At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Eminem’s former No. 1 Kamikaze is steady with 103,000 units (down 24 percent).
6LACK arrives at No. 3 with his second album, East Atlanta Love Letter. It notches the singer-rapper his first top 10 effort and highest charting set yet and bows with 77,000 units (20,000 in traditional album sales). The streaming-powered set (which garnered 56,000 SEA units, equaling 72.7 million on-demand audio streams for its tracks). 6LACK’s first release, FREE 6LACK, debuted at No. 68 on the Dec. 10, 2016-dated chart with 10,000 units, and eventually peaked at No. 34 on the May 13, 2017-dated list (14,000 units -- the set’s largest week).
Drake’s Scorpion steps 5-4 with 68,000 units (down 5 percent), Travis Scott’s Astroworld climbs 7-5 with 62,000 units (down 6 percent) and Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys ascends 8-6 with 47,000 units (down 2 percent). Ariana Grande’s Sweetener rebounds 10-7 with 38,000 units (down 13 percent), Paul McCartney’s Egypt Station slides 1-8 in its second week with 37,000 units (down 76 percent) and Nicki Minaj’s Queen rises 11-9 with 36,000 units (down 12 percent).
Juice WRLD’s Goodbye & Good Riddance closes out the new top 10, stepping 12-10 with just over 36,000 units (down 3 percent).

Carrie Underwood is sitting “pretty” at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, as her latest studio effort, Cry Pretty, arrives atop the list. In doing so, she makes country history atop the tally, as she becomes the only woman to take four country albums to No. 1 on the all-genre albums chart.
“This album is so special to me for so many reasons and I couldn’t be more proud that people have embraced it the way they have,” Underwood tells Billboard. “I feel so blessed to be able to do what I do, and I am incredibly grateful for the support of fans around the world that make it all possible.”
Cry Pretty starts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (dated Sept. 29) with 266,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Sept. 20, according to Nielsen Music. That’s the biggest week of 2018 for any album by a woman, and the largest for a country set in more than three years.

I bet only die hard fans have booked the tickets. Exactly right. And those are the same fans who would have bought the album anyway. I think the bundle will really show its value once the tour starts, it will give Cry Pretty some legs.

Universal Music Group Holds Nine of the Top 10 Albums on Billboard 200 Chart

It's a big week for Universal Music Group (UMG) on the Billboard 200 albums chart, as the company distributes a stunning nine out of the top 10 albums on the latest tally, dated Sept. 29.
It's the first time that a company has claimed the feat in nearly five years, dating back to the Nov. 30, 2013 chart, when UMG also held nine of the top 10.
On the new Billboard 200, UMG stands tall with Carrie Underwood's No. 1 debut Cry Pretty (released via Capitol Records Nashville), which also earned the biggest week for an album by a female artist in 2018 (in terms of equivalent album units earned). Cry Pretty is Underwood's first album for Capitol Nashville, after a career with Sony Music's Arista Nashville.
Carrie Underwood, winner of Vocal Event of the Year, attends the 53rd Academy of Country Music Awards at MGM Grand Garden Arena on April 15, 2018 in Las Vegas. Read More Carrie Underwood Makes Country History on the Billboard 200 Chart As 'Cry Pretty' Debuts at No. 1
UMG is also at Nos. 2-4 and 6-10 with: Eminem's Kamikaze (No. 2, Shady/Aftermath/Interscope Records) 6LACK's East Atlanta Love Letter (a debut at No. 3, LVRN/Interscope), Drake's Scorpion (No. 4, Young Money/Cash Money/Republic Records), Post Malone's beerbongs & bentleys (No. 6, Republic), Ariana Grande's Sweetener (No. 7, Republic), Paul McCartney's Egypt Station (No. 8, MPL/Capitol Records), Nicki Minaj's Queen (No. 9, Young Money/Cash Money/Republic) and Juice WRLD's Goodbye & Good Riddance (No. 10, Grade A/Interscope).
The only album in the top 10 not distributed by UMG is Travis Scott's Astroworld, at No. 5 (Cactus Jack/Grand Hustle/Epic Records, distributed by Sony Music).
UMG's near-monopoly of the top 10 marks another achievement for the company in 2018; back on the April 14-dated chart, the company held eight of the top 10. Also earlier this year, UMG's Republic Records notched the rare feat of having four out of the top five albums concurrently (on the Sept. 1 chart). And, less than two months earlier, Republic held the entire top three (July 14 chart).
The last time UMG hit nine of the top 10, in 2013, two of the same artists from this week were also on the list: Eminem's Marshall Mathers LP 2 was at No. 2 and Drake's Nothing Was The Same was at No. 9, while Lady Gaga's Artpop led the chart at No. 1.

Carrie Underwood's sixth studio LP, Cry Pretty (Capitol Nashville/Universal Music Group Nashville), flies in atop Billboard's Top Country Albums chart (dated Sept. 29) with 266,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Sept. 20, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 251,000 are from traditional album sales.
Concurrently, Pretty bows at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200, making Underwood the first woman to top the chart with four country albums. On Top Country Albums, her six studio projects and a hits package make her the first artist in the survey's 52-year history to post seven consecutive career-opening No. 1s.
"This album is so special to me for so many reasons, and I couldn't be more proud that people have embraced it the way they have," Underwood tells Billboard. "I feel so blessed to be able to do what I do, and I am incredibly grateful for the support of fans around the world that make it all possible."

Additionally, all of Underwood's albums have opened atop the country tally, starting with 2005's Some Hearts. Carnival Ride followed in 2007, and she continued with Play On (2009), Blown Away (2012), Greatest Hits: Decade #1 (2014) and Storyteller (2015).She passes Miranda Lambert, who has posted six successive career-starting Top Country Albums No. 1s (with all also debuting at the summit).
The 251,000-unit sales week for Cry Pretty is the biggest for a country act since Luke Bryan's Kill the Lights debuted with 320,000 copies sold (Aug. 29, 2015). The last female artist with a bigger sales week for a country album was Taylor Swift, whose Red sold 276,000 copies in its ninth week on the chart (Jan. 5, 2013).
Underwood ties Dolly Parton for the third-most Top Country Albums No. 1s among women. Reba McEntire leads with 13, followed by Loretta Lynn (10). Underwood produced Pretty with David Garcia, who also co-wrote six of the tracks, and she co-penned 12 of the 13 songs on the set.

The title-track first single from the album peaked at No. 5 on the airplay, streaming and sales-based Hot Country Songs chart and No. 9 on Country Airplay, becoming Underwood's 27th top 10 on the lists, encompassing all her proper singles promoted to the format.
Pretty sophomore single "Love Wins" jumps 36-26 on Hot Country Songs.
CHECKING INTO NO. 1: Old Dominion scores its fifth No. 1 on Country Airplay and its fourth in a row as "Hotel Key" (RCA Nashville) ascends 3-1 in its 27th week, increasing by 7 percent to 43 million audience impressions in the week ending Sept. 23. On Hot Country Songs, it bumps 7-5, becoming the band's sixth top five hit.
"Key," written by Old Dominion's Matthew Ramsey and Trevor Rosen (with Josh Osborne), is the third single from the act's sophomore LP, Happy Endings, which debuted at No. 1 on Top Country Albums in September 2017. It follows "Written in the Sand," which led the Country Airplay chart dated Feb. 17, and "No Such Thing as a Broken Heart" (Sept. 9, 2017).

Old Dominion's other Country Airplay No. 1s are "Song for Another Time" (Dec. 24, 2016) and "Break Up With Him" (which led for two weeks beginning Nov. 14, 2015). Its other top 10, "Snapback," hit No. 2 (June 4, 2016).
NEW TOP 10s: Russell Dickerson's "Blue Tacoma" (Triple Tigers) ascends to the Hot Country Songs top 10 (11-8). It gains by 11 percent to 39.1 million impressions and pushes 4-2 on Country Airplay.
"Tacoma" is Dickerson's second Hot Country Songs top 10 in as many appearances, following debut single "Yours," which peaked at No. 3 on Jan. 27. "Yours" ruled Country Airplay for two frames starting the same week.
Kane Brown's "Lose It" (Zone 4/RCA Nashville) becomes his third Hot Country Songs top 10 (12-10) as it rises 15-13 on Country Airplay (19.6 million, up 7 percent). His other Hot Country Songs top 10s: the No. 2-peaking "Heaven" (March 31) and "What Ifs" (featuring Lauren Alaina), which crowned the chart for five weeks starting Oct. 21, 2017.

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Sept. 29), Carrie Underwood makes country history at the top of tally, as her Cry Pretty album debuted at No. 1. In doing so, she became the first female artist to take four country efforts to No. 1 on the list. The album started with 266,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Sept. 20, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 251,000 were in traditional album sales.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).
Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:
— Original Broadway Cast Recording, Hamilton: An American Musical – No. 32 — The original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton: An American Musical, racks up its 145th week in the top 40 on the Billboard 200 chart (dipping 30-32), surpassing Adele’s 21 for the longest run in the top 40 since Nielsen Music began powering the tally on May 25, 1991.
In fact, Hamilton has logged the second-most weeks in the top 40 since Aug. 17, 1963, when the chart combined its previously separate mono and stereo listings into one overall tally. Since then, only The Sound of Music soundtrack has logged more weeks in the top 40, with 161 (stretched between April 10, 1965 and May 4, 1968).
Hamilton debuted at No. 12 on the Oct. 17, 2015-dated chart, and eventually peaked at No. 3 on July 2, 2016. The set has never ranked lower than No. 60 in its entire 156-week run. Adele’s 21 premiered at No. 1 on March 12, 2011, and notched its 144th week in the top 40 on March 26, 2016, after the release of 21’s follow-up, 25, in November 2015.
Billboard began regularly publishing a weekly albums chart on March 24, 1956. In 1959, the chart split into separate mono and stereo listings, only to fold back into one chart on Aug. 17, 1963. The depth of the charts, before 1963, fluctuated between 10 and 40 positions. After 1963, the list became 150 positions deep, eventually growing to 200 in 1967.
— Tony Bennett & Diana Krall, Love Is Here to Stay – No. 11 — Bennett and Krall’s team-up on Love Is Here to Stay arrives at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 with 36,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, 35,000 were in traditional album sales — the largest sales week for any jazz album in nearly two years. The last jazz set to post a bigger sales frame was Norah Jones’ Day Breaks, when it bowed with 44,000 on the Oct. 29, 2016 chart.
Love marks Bennett’s 16th top 40 charting effort on the Billboard 200, and Krall’s 11th. t’s also Bennett’s second collaborative set with a leading lady to reach the top 40, following his chart-topping Cheek to Cheek with Lady Gaga in 2014.
Love also debuts at No. 1 on both the sales-ranked Traditional Jazz Albums and overall Jazz Albums tallies. For Bennett, he ups his No. 1 count on the Traditional Jazz Albums chart to 14, while Krall climbs to 13 leaders. On the overall Jazz Albums list (which blends traditional and contemporary jazz recordings), Love is the ninth topper for Bennett, and the 11th for Krall.
— Khalid, American Teen – No. 34 — The set — which has yet to leave the top 40 after 81 weeks — has earned 2 million equivalent album units (of which 219,000 are in album sales), while its songs have collected 2.4 billion on-demand audio streams.
— Willie Nelson, My Way – No. 36 — Willie Nelson’s latest jazzy release, My Way, debuts at No. 36 on the Billboard 200 with 15,000 equivalent album units earned (14,000 in traditional album sales). The set, featuring covers of standards made famous by Frank Sinatra, bows at No. 2 on the sales-based Traditional Jazz Albums and overall Jazz Albums charts — his fourth album to reach the top two on both tallies.
— Aphex Twin, Collapse (EP) – No. 113 — The electronic artist notches his seventh top 10 on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart (No. 2). The five-song album also did particularly well on vinyl — half of its first-week sales (3,000 of 6,000) were on the format.

I think 60-70k from bundles sound about right Seeing as it's only selling doing 28k sales second week (HDD), I'd actually say it did possibly almost 150k in bundles? A normal second-week sales drop for a Country album is like, 70%. Meaning around 100k~ first week sales would've lead to a 70% drop to 30k~. It did 251k first week.
