Chart Peak: #40 Chart Weeks: 4 Feel free to share your thoughts on this song below! Literally would've been my #1 if it made this list. Eels are great, idk why Alt radio randomly abandoned them after getting a #1 hit.

I hope I don't jinx it now, but I can't believe I managed to survive the bottom 15 without losing a song in my top half!

Awww I didn’t manage to finish my RD before the deadline I thought closing time was like midnight... I’ll be following this though :) So far only three major losses: - lullaby: a # 3 in my personal chart that would’ve been in my 40s in this RD. I really like the melody, especially in the chorus and the bridge. - jump jive n wail: I liked this sort of comeback for Brian Setzer. The orchestra sound and rock and roll sound were great. It reached the top 10 in my personal chart and would’ve been in my 50s for this RD. Btw, Zoot Suit Riot also made my personal chart but briefly and below #15. I - my own prison: the first Creed song I chatted, peaked outside my top 10, and it was my favorite of the 3 in this RD by far. Would’ve been in my 50s too.

100. Hooch - I figured this would be low, but not all the way at the bottom. For me, it's cheesy, but inoffensive and mildly catchy.
99. Get 'Em Outta Here - Now this is worthy of being a bottom dweller. Obnoxious, repetitive, and stupid; a precursor to what Alternative radio would become for the next few years.
98. Why Can't We Be Friends - Not surprised by the ranking. This had the potential to be a pretty good cover, but the annoying way they sing the verses ruined it for me.
97. Shelf In The Room - Lame song. Didn't care that much for this one back in the day, and it's only gotten worse with time.
96. Sugar Cane - I was a naive and sheltered 8th grader, and didn't realize this was about cocaine back then, though the lyrics did seem weird to me. That knowledge didn't make this song any better, though. I thought either this or the other "monkey" band would be the #100.
95. What's This Life For? - Typical Creed; nuff said.
94. Sunday Shining - And my streak of just-missed perfect rankings continues. Another shitshow.
93. Lullaby - I honestly thought my #78 ranking would be one of the lowest. But I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking this song isn't very good.
92. Royal Oil - Okay, now this is the first real disappointment here. I'll grant that the other two singles from this album were better, but still, this is a cool ska jam. Did not expect this to be so hated; I certainly hope "The Impression That I Get" gets some respect here.
91. The Down Town - This wasn't too bad, and was my highest-ranked DOTN song. But ultimately generic post-grunge wasn't going to fare too well in a year like this.
90. Jump Jive An' Wail - This is less surprising than "Royal Oil", but still disappointing. I loved the ska and swing trends from this era.
89. Touch, Peel, and Stand - I thought this one might fare decently here, but I'm not complaining as this has always been pretty dull IMO.
88. Zoot Suit Riot - And swing gets the shaft once again. This song is so much fun (and takes me back to high school band class).
87. My Own Prison - The verdict is that this band won't be missed on future Alt rankdowns.
86. It's You - Well I figured this was coming after some of the other reveals. Catchy tune and nice to see the previous wave of ska representing here.

I certainly hope "The Impression That I Get" gets some respect here. If I recall correctly, the rock posters ranked it high in the 1997 airplay rankdown, for the most part. So I imagine it will do much better than this song on an alt rankdown, when its time comes.

87. My Own Prison - Creed Can't say I didn't see this coming, but it wasn't gonna sway my vote. Not even if you guy's paid me. The song is incredible in music , lyrics and vocals. My favorite Creed song hands down and the one that got me into Creed's music to begin with. I consider it a triumph that it wasn't in the bottom ten. Not the first time I lose my #1 early. "Nickelback's "Animals" was another one. This won't be my #1 on Active 1998. That one will be by an even fiercer band.

100. Hooch - EverythingFirst time listen, and hopefully it stays that way. I didn't tank it for lyrics. I tanked it for slacker sound and awful percussion. 99. Get 'Em Outta Here - Sprung MonkeyThis just kinda fits here. 98. Why Can't We Be Friends - Smash MouthWhy can't we be friends with Smash Mouth? 97. Shelf in the Room - Days of the NewI couldn't care less about this band, but I thought you guys would dig on their grungy sound. 96. Sugar Cane - Space MonkeysI wasn't even aware of this bands existence? Boy, do they stink. 95. What's This Life For - CreedOne of my favorite Creed songs. Simple ,but wonderful little melody. 94. Sunday Shining - Finley Quayetanked this for those awful vocals. I mean WTF was that? 93. Lullaby - Shawn MullinsI like this one. It always struck me as Alternative Country. The spoken parts were kinda testy, but the rest was solid. 92. Royal Oil - The Mighty Mighty BosstonesNot one of their best, but still better than about 30 songs on this list. 91. The Down Town - Days of the NewDidn't think this band would appear on bottom 10? Kinda glad tho, cuz they did nothing to bring my spirits up. 90. Jump Jive an' Wail - The Brian Setzer OrchestraYou all must sleep in coffins, because this song is a happy pill. Not too mention the awesomness of Brian Setzer. Didn't you guys get the "Rock This Town" vibe here. 89. Touch, Peel, and Stand - Days of the NewThe only one of these three that sounded half way decent. 88. Zoot Suit Riot - Cherry Poppin' DaddiesYup, you all definitely sleep in coffins. This out before the comatose "Brick". 87. My Own Prison - CreedTrolls will be trolls. 86. It's You - The Specials Wow another great song. Boy this rankdown is all ass backwards.

EXTRAS:
Lady, Your Roof Brings Me Down - Scott Weiland I have this album. I loved this song. The melody reminded me of a Circus. Very Beatles like. Scott could pretty much have sneezed into the mic and I would rank it high. This one would have occupied "Zoot Suit Riot's" position at #10.
She Said - Collective Soul I didn't really flip for this song. Decent, just not too memorable. Sounded like Alanis Morrisette music of that year. middle 70's
Last Stop: This Town - eels This ain't so terrible. Kinda quirky, but I do like when it picks up with the guitars.
The Rockafeller Skank - Fatboy Slim eh, nothing but another bottom ten contender for me.
Fall on Tears - Love Spit Love Love Spit Love was awesome. This one was from their second album. Of course they figured to use the melody from "Am I Wrong", because that was the hit. The music was good but Richard Butler's vocals made it shine. This one would have been in my top 15.
Sometimes It Hurts - Stabbing Westward Started off crappy, but picked up once they decided to purchase a real set of drums. Eh, middle 70's is the best I could do with it.

I'm just not going to be very upset about many of these reveals considering I liked my top 93, and substantialy more so than in amy other year we've done so far. Like, my #93 would compete for top 50 in some of my 2000s years. My top 25 would compete for top 10 in most of those years.
However, you guys are all nuts about disliking Touch, Peel, and Stand. I can get not liking their others, but that song is fantastic.

It was difficult to find an accurate place for "Jump, Jive, an' Wail" in my ranking. The Louis Prima original is genuinely one of my favorite vocal jazz songs of all time. Brian Seltzer's version was faithful, so it's a pleasant listen for that alone, but often 'faithful' isn't the best direction to take for a cover/standard, and I just felt a lack of the freshness, spontaneity, or groove that made the original so great.
Glad "Touch, Peel, and Stand" didn't get the 'big hit boost'. There were so many f**king boring, label-manufactured, phony, vapid, copycat, "i'm sad but i'm also threatening WOW!!" albums like DOTN1 in the first post-grunge bloom that they all blurred together--especially by all the way into 1997.

Um, wow, this isn't a good start Edition:
100. Hooch---It's the Frenchie, Frenchie part, right? I'm not sure how an inoffensive song gets disliked enough to be placed at 100, but oh well.
99. Get 'Em Outta Here---Not sure I share the sentiment of some other posters, but this was decent in a stacked list so I don't feel too bad. NOTE: Was the last song I listened to for this list.
98. Why Can't We Be Friends---It was a decent 3 minute song, but they decide to mess around for another 90 seconds. Bad move, Smash Mouth.
97. Shelf in Your Room---Of the three Days of the New songs, this ended up second in my rankdown. In a less crowded year, this would be top half for me.
96. Sugar Cane---Can't really complain with this one's ranking. It was OK, but for this year that just avoided my bottom 10.
95. What's This Life For---I thought Creed was a Christian band at one point? Was this song an attempt to turn away from that? I just know I didn't care for it.
94. Sunday Shining---Wait, what? This was a find in this rankdown. It had a pleasant, airy sound to it. How?
93. Lullaby---I guess I can get this a bit more. Must not have been a fan of spoken word singing and the slower tempo. But I dug it.
92. Royal Oil---The Impression that I Get will do a lot better for me. This just felt OK, with the lyrics dragging behind the sound.
91. The Down Town---Yeah, this was my top rated Days of the New. Kinda had a nice sound to it.
90. Jump Jive and Wail---For a while when I was younger, I thought it was Drunk Drive and a Wail. I enjoyed the big band feel good vibe of this one, but maybe not enough rock for some of you?
89. Touch Peel and Stand---And this was my least favorite of the Days of the New songs. It's not a good sign when I drifted in and out during the singing, right? Anyway, perfecto number 1!
88. Zoot Suit Riot---If I wasn't trying to get some of you to do my rankdown, I'd really express my disappointment with this one. Like Wail, it's another big band, feel good song. Almost put this in my top 10, but glad I didn't now.
87. My Own Prison---Oof, Doc. I know what it's like to lose a song in the first round. Not fun. Anyway, I wish they kind of stuck with this type of sound throughout their career. Maybe they could have gained more respect? Dunno.
86. It's You---Decent first listen, but this list is pretty stacked.
Scores out of 5: 5 (1-12) 4.5 (13-19) 4 (20-41) 3.5 (42-65) 3 (66-84) 2.5 (85-93) 2 (94-98) 1.5 (99-100)
Like some others, my worst songs in here would be in the 80s-90s in other years. Keep that in mind.
Also, not losing a top 10 this early is nice. But I still have 8 bottom 10s left. Yeah.

Let's get started with #85, the song with the twelfth-lowest standard deviation. This is a song that started its run outside of the bottom 40. It did not last long, and it eventually fell into the bottom 20, where it would stay for almost all of the rankdown. Despite it spending a lot of time in the bottom twenty, it didn't spend a single ranking in the bottom ten.
Nine posters have to say goodbye to a top half ranking to start this set (one poster losing their first), and only one poster will lose a top 25 ranking, a low top 25. There are only two bottom tens, neither bottom fives, but nearly 20 posters ranked it somewhere in the 20 spots above the bottom ten. And yes, there are perfect rankings aplenty.

Unlike #85, #84 is by a band we've seen before. This song spent time inside the bottom ten early on, but, outside of a couple of very brief moments where it escaped the bottom twenty, this song's destiny was in the middle of the eighties.
Hey, eight posters? You're about to lose a top half rankiing, with one poster losing their first. Two posters will also lose a top 25 ranking, one of them also losing a top 15 ranking. Neither of these posters had a particularly great reveal last time. Once again, there's only two bottom tens, but there's a bunch of rankings in the eighties and seventies.
