The songs from this year were so good, I hadda make a playlist. Sadly, #100 (a song from the Mo Money soundtrack) just doesn't seem to be available in Canada. Maybe anywhere. So I've had to substitute what I'm sure is a crappy karaoke version.

The score for the #1 song combines it's #1 charting in 1988 and its #34 run in 1984. They were the same recording, but in '84, the single was edited before the toasting/rapping section, because that whole rap thing was clearly never going to catch on.

For perfectionists, both Faith & Livin' On A Prayer briefly re-charted in the last decade. Those points are not included on this list, but are small enough to have no effect on the in-year ranking of those songs.

On the other hand, Valerie by Steve Winwood charted twice in the 80s and those two runs are combined (on the basis that the chartings were reasonably close together).

So this was interesting. The 1986 contains songs that charted both 20 or more years earlier and almost 30 years later.

The big songs by both Prince and Whitney recharted briefly after their deaths, but those points are not included on this chart. Similarly both Stand By Me and Twist and Shout originally charted in the 60s but again, I've decided against including those runs in this chart (too far apart).

On the other hand, both In Your Eyes and Tarzan Boy had 2nd chart runs within a few years of 1986, and so I've included those runs with this chart.

I am nothing if not inconsistent.

Since I've reworked the entire history of the Billboard Hot 100 using the same weighed point system as Billboard itself seems to use in its all-time charts, I can show year by year how songs would have been listed if the same criteria were used on the complete chart runs of songs in the years they peaked. This 2017 list isn't hugely different than the first list back on page 1 of this thread, but there enough differences that I'd thought I'd show it.

I've updated the 1991 chart to reflect the actual Billboard "all-time" methodology. Results can be found here.

The biggest impact is that songs that charted late in the year were affected by a mammoth decrease in the "multiplier". Before Nov 27, 1991 all points were doubled based on chart position, afterward the multiplier was reduced to 1.0. So songs like Black or White, It's So Hard to Say Goodbye To Yesterday and When A Man Loves a Woman, which peaked late in 1991 and continued into 1992 almost had their points halved.

As a private project, I've been creating a "Hit Checklist" for every year of the Billboard chart using the GOAT algorithm, and including all tracks that peaked in each calendar (rather than the very artificial Jan 1 to October 31st timeline that Billboard used or uses).

I just completed the list for 1965, and HOLY CRAP!, does it miss a lot of major classic hits that charted late in the year. The last column in this table is the Billboard Year-end position.

None of the songs missing from the 1965 list showed up on the 1966 list either! So classic tracks like Turn! Turn! Turn!, Yesterday, Get Off My Cloud and The Sound of Silence have never appeared on a year-end chart!
