"Girls Like You" better not break the record of "Iris". That song is a classic, while "Girls Like You" I am sure will be mostly forgotten before the end of this decade. Iris shouldn't even have the record tbh, since ofcourse Urban/Urban AC/Country/Spanish/etc formats were yet to be included in Overall airplay, and it wouldn't have touched 18 weeks if they were. Girls Like You having the record would feel weird too though. Songs like All of Me/Happy/Blurred Lines/We Belong Together actually snatched audience impression records, and were hits on much more formats -- Top 40, HAC, AC, Rhythmic, Urban, Urban AC, and Spanish. Girls Like You is just benefitting from Top 40 & HAC having a drought. It honestly feels like a fluke similar to Don't Wanna Know spending 8 weeks #1 on radio.

"Blurred Lines" had better longevity than "Happy", but it still wasn't enough, since "Roar" and "Royals" were fresher tunes in the beginning of fall 2013. Like you said, "Girls Like You" is just lucky because its competition ("Better Now", "Youngblood") is choking, and, for whatever reason, Pop and Hot AC are deciding not to let go of "Girls Like You" for newer tunes. "We Belong Together", like the other two songs, apparently peaked on all formats simultaneously (more or less), so it had a pretty big fall, too, especially when "Gold Digger" came around.

Girls Like You is only the fifth highest peaking song on radio this year (Perfect 151M, Finesse/Meant To Be 140M, Havana 137.6M, GLY 129.7M), but it's stable with 123-129M audience impressions since the August 11-dated chart. Aug. 4 - 116.4M (first week at #1 on radio) Aug. 11 - 123.7M Aug. 18 - 128.9M (peak in points on the Hot 100) Aug. 25 - 129.7M (peak in audience impressions) Sep. 1 - 128.0M Sep. 8 - 127.6M Sep. 15 - 127.6M Sep. 22 - 123.5M Sep. 29 - 127.6M Oct. 6 - 128.0M Oct. 13 - 125.9M Oct. 20 - 125.4M EDIT: Actually, GLY is #5. Havana peaked with 137.6M.

Which means it could've got 30 million+ audience added to its overall numbers. The record for audience impressions at that time was only 105 million (set by Celine earlier that year), meaning Iris had below 105 million, so 30 million was a big amount and could've likely put TBIM at #1. Also, further down its run at #1 1998-10-10 1 Iris - Goo Goo Dolls 2 I Don't Want To Miss A Thing - Aerosmith 3 One Week - Barenaked Ladies 4 Are You That Somebody? - Aaliyah1998-10-17 1 Iris - Goo Goo Dolls 2 I Don't Want To Miss A Thing - Aerosmith 3 One Week - Barenaked Ladies 4 Are You That Somebody? - Aaliyah1998-10-24 1 Iris - Goo Goo Dolls 2 I Don't Want To Miss A Thing - Aerosmith 3 One Week - Barenaked Ladies 4 Are You That Somebody? - Aaliyah1998-10-31 1 Iris - Goo Goo Dolls 2 One Week - Barenaked Ladies 3 I Don't Want To Miss A Thing - Aerosmith 4 Are You That Somebody? - AaliyahAre You That Somebody? was also top 3 on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay these weeks, so again, another 30 million+ that could've counted for it, and another 4 weeks Iris could've lost.

"Iris" peaked at top 10 on the Mainstream Rock chart, another format which wasn't included on the airplay charts in 1998. I'm sure it would have gotten some pretty nice support from that format being added.

You've opened up a legit question. Why did it take so long to add all those radio formats to the Hot 100 Airplay chart? From 1984 to 1993, it was essentially just Mainstream Top 40.
It then added AC, Hot AC, Alternative and Rhythmic, all considered splintered subsets of Top 40 at that time... Didn't add R&B, Country, Latin, Christian, etc till late 1998.
The answer I always got from BB staff was that prior to the 1990s, all other radio formats were so low in overall radio audience that their inclusion was next to negligible. Not sure I buy that.

The 1992-1998 charts would've given the 2001-2006/2017-present charts a run for their money with Urban dominance had Urban & Urban AC airplay been included. I mean, R&B/Hip-Hop already dominated the Hot 100 for 1992-1998, so just adding in airplay for them to the mix... perhaps that was the reason they waited so long. Also ofcourse, since Country was a huge seller in the 90s, who knows what the Hot 100 would've looked like with Country airplay. Achy Breaky Heart peaked #4, without Country Airplay, where it spent 5 weeks #1. Perhaps, not even #1 peaks for huge Country songs, but huge longevity similar to Faith Hill's Breathe in 2000 after Country airplay was added. That seems to be the trend for huge Country hits period even today (Before He Cheats, Meant to Be, Body Like a Backroad, Cruise, Need You Now, etc).

From Mariah Carey's 1991 #1 smash "Someday" to, now, 2018's "Girls Like You " by Maroon 5 featuring Cardi B, a relatively select few smashes have led the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart for at least 10 weeks. How few? A mere 12.6 percent of all Hot 100 Airplay No. 1s dating to the chart's launch on November 30, 1990, have earned the achievement.
Saying what you will about the history of the changing formats - this is the list - most weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 airplay chart

It blows my mind to this day that Lollipop was #1 for 10 weeks with it's lyrical content.

Lollipop was a game changer that moment when pop music is very dominant that time.

Republic is currently heavily pushing Don't Matter To Me to CHR, HAC, Urban AC, Urban and Rhythmic all at the same time. When was the last time a non lead single got pushed to so many formats this early in it's radio run? It makes sense. It's a perfect radio song, fantastic for fall/winter, great MJ guest spot, and the biggest radio artist Drake. It literally is so generic. They waited too long to push this single. They should of pushed summer games as that actually has a nice beat going for it.

Girls Like You has to have the best timing in all of chart history. It’s crazy it could get 5 weeks at #1 when I didn’t think it’d get 1.

Happier will probably be a bigger hit than Pompeii for Bastille. I never expected to see this happening, still shocked.
Tbh I never expected Bastille, Foster the People, Weezer, 5 Seconds of Summer and Panic! At The Disco to have hits this year.

Damn..."Better Now" hitting a new peak at #2 this week this late into it's chart run...
At one point, I thought #5 would be its peak.
