Andrea Bocelli On Track for First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Si'
10/30/2018 by Keith Caulfield
Mark Seliger
Andrea Bocelli
Andrea Bocelli will likely earn his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart next week, according to industry forecasters. Those in the know suggest his new studio effort, Si -- which was released on Oct. 26 via Sugar/Decca Records -- could launch atop the tally with around 125,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Nov. 1. Bocelli has previously notched eight top 10 albums, two of which peaked at No. 2.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multimetric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the Nov. 10-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Si could debut at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, Nov. 4.
If Si starts at No. 1, it will tally the first leader for Bocelli in his 20-plus-year career on the Billboard 200. He first reached the chart on Dec. 20, 1997 with Romanza, which eventually peaked at No. 35 the following December. In total, Bocelli has claimed eight top 10 efforts, with two of those reaching No. 2: Passione (one week at No. 2 in 2013) and My Christmas (five weeks at No. 2 in 2009).
Si features collaborations with Josh Groban, Dua Lipa, Russian soprano Aida Garifullina, Ed Sheeran and Bocelli’s 21-year-old son Matteo Bocelli. (Groban, Lipa and Sheeran all sing in Italian on Si.) The mostly all-Italian-language album also benefits from a variety of available configurations of the set, including an edition of the album with Spanish-language versions of seven songs.
Si’s first week will also get a boost from sales generated by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer tied to a series of Bocelli shows in 2018 and early 2019.
Bocelli’s Si will likely bump the chart’s current champ, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born soundtrack, down to No. 2 in its fourth week on the tally. The album spent its first three weeks at No. 1.
Also on track for sizable bows on next week’s chart: Tory Lanez’s Love Me Now and Joji’s Ballads 1. Both titles could launch with around 40,000 units earned.

The mix of the music buying population skews older at holiday time. If Andrea Bocelli released in March, this would fail miserably

^Probably since more people are actually willing to actually buy during the holidays. The album ticket bundle probably helped Bocelli's significantly given who his audience is.

On Oct. 26, the first major crop of Christmas releases arrived, from John Legend, Gwen Stefani and Pentatonix. But with the holiday itself two months away, what’s the rush? “The straight answer is the physical market,” says John Fleckenstein, co-president of RCA Records, Pentatonix’s label. “Christmas albums tend to be multigenerational, and thus, they skew very heavily on the physical side.”
He explains that in the United States, stores like Target and Walmart start holiday in-store marketing and positioning around Nov. 1, “so anybody who’s going for a broad-base national play with their album will need to get a physical version into stores by the end of October.”
But a prime in-store placement isn’t the only thing to consider anymore. “One of the changes that we've seen in the past few years, particularly last year, is that the streaming of Christmas music has exploded. And that will be true again this year. As much as we put a lot of focus on our physical, we also put focus on downloads and our playlisting approach because obviously streaming, like everywhere else in the industry, is ballooning for Christmas music."
He adds that he’s particularly interested to see how the increased role of connected home speakers plays into the streaming of Christmas music, noting that the Amazon Alexa was one of the chief drivers of streaming from last year and likely will be again this year.
Even as many acts continue to “chase the commerciality of the Christmas season,” he believes that there’s “one big winner every year” -- and he feels lucky that the winner has happened to be Pentatonix for the past few consecutive runs.
Pentatonix’s previous Christmas release, 2017’s A Pentatonix Christmas, hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and now, according to industry forecasters, its latest arrival, Christmas Is Here!, which RCA released Oct. 26, could earn around 15,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Nov. 1. “We’ve been doing this for four years with these guys,” says Fleckenstein. “They are a force at this point.”

11/10/18 Billboard 200: www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/8483107/andrea-bocelli-earns-first-no-1-album-billboard-200-chartAndrea Bocelli Earns First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Si'11/4/2018 by Keith Caulfield Plus: Joji and Tory Lanez debut in top 10. Andrea Bocelli achieves his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as his new studio effort, Si, debuts atop the tally. The set, which was released via Sugar/Decca Records on Oct. 26, earned 126,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Nov. 1, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 123,000 were in album sales. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Nov. 10-dated chart --where Si starts at No. 1 -- will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, Nov. 6. Andrea Bocelli’s First No. 1: The 26th time’s the charm, as Bocelli bows atop the Billboard 200 with his 26th charting album, Si. The singer has charted on the tally since Dec. 20, 1997, when Romanza debuted at No. 114, on its way to a No. 35 peak on Dec. 19, 1998. All told, Si marks Bocelli’s ninth top 10 effort. Bocelli has come quite close to No. 1 previously: he’s peaked at No. 2 twice, with My Christmas (five weeks at No. 2 in 2009) and Passione (one week at No. 2 in 2013). The former spent five consecutive weeks stuck in the runner-up slot. In its first two weeks at No. 2, Bon Jovi’s The Circle and John Mayer’s Battle Studies debuted at No. 1, respectively. Then, in My Christmas’ third week at No. 2, Susan Boyle’s debut album I Dreamed a Dream bowed at No. 1 and spent six straight weeks at No. 1. 20-Year Wait for First No. 1 Album: Bocelli waited a little more than 20 years and 10 months for his first No. 1, dating back to when Romanza bowed on the list dated Dec. 20, 1997. That’s the longest wait for a chart-topper since January of 2016, when the late David Bowie tallied his first leader 43 years and nine months after his chart debut. He hit No. 1 with Blackstar on the Jan. 30, 2016-dated chart, and he made his chart debut on the tally way back on April 15, 1972 with Hunky Dory. (Bowie died of cancer on Jan. 10, 2016, two days after Blackstar was released.) Before Bocelli, the last living artist to wait longer for their first No. 1 was James Taylor, who notched his first leader with Before This World on July 4, 2015 -- 45 years after his chart debut on March 14, 1970 with Sweet Baby James. Bocelli’s Largest Sales Week Since 2009: Si sold 123,000 copies (of its 126,000 total units), marking the singer’s best sales week since My Christmas sold 284,000 copies over the Christmas week of 2009 (reflected on the chart dated Jan. 9, 2010). Si’s significant debut was powered by sales generated by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer tied to a series of Bocelli shows in 2018 and early 2019. (Si also nabs the largest sales week for any classical album since July 2, 2001, when Jackie Evancho’s classical crossover set Dream With Me sold 161,000 copies in its first week and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.) First Classical No. 1 in 10 Years: Si also debuts at No. 1 on both the Classical Crossover Albums chart and the overall Classical Albums chart. (The latter tally combines both classical crossover and traditional classical efforts.) In turn, Si is the first classical album to be No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart since Jan. 5, 2008, when Josh Groban’s classical crossover holiday effort Noel spent its fifth and final week atop the tally. Si is the first classical set to debut at No. 1 since the vocal quartet Il Divo bowed at No. 1 with Ancora, another classical crossover effort, on the Feb. 11, 2006-dated chart. First No. 1 for Sugar Music & First No. 1 for Decca Records in 10 Years: Si was released through Sugar Music/Decca Records, and marks the first leader for Sugar, and the first chart-topper for Decca, since 2008. Decca last led the list with the soundtrack to the film Mamma Mia!, which was released via Decca/UMe, and spent one week at No. 1 on the Aug. 23, 2008-dated tally. A Non-English Album at No. 1: Si is a mostly all-Italian-language album, making it one of the few non-English efforts to hit No. 1. It’s actually the third primarily non-English album to lead the list in 2018, following two mostly Korean albums from BTS: Love Yourself: Answer (Sept. 8) and Love Yourself: Tear (June 2). Before BTS, the last mostly non-English album to lead the list was Il Divo’s Ancora on Feb. 11, 2006. (The album is comprised of songs performed in Spanish, Italian and French, along with a track sung partially in English.) As for Si, it includes collaborations with Josh Groban, Dua Lipa, Russian soprano Aida Garifullina, Ed Sheeran and Bocelli’s 21-year-old son Matteo Bocelli. (Groban, Lipa and Sheeran all sing in Italian on Si.) The album benefits from a variety of available versions of the set, including an edition of the album with Spanish-language versions of seven songs. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s soundtrack to A Star Is Born falls to No. 2 on the Billboard 200 after three weeks at No. 1. The set earned 93,000 units in the week ending Nov. 1 (down 15 percent). Coming in at No. 3 is Joji’s BALLADS 1, with 57,000 units earned (with 34,000 of that sum in album sales). Joji (real name: George Miller) is a former YouTuber who previously logged an entry on the Billboard 200 with the In Tongues EP (peaking at No. 58 on the Nov. 25, 2017-dated list). BALLADS 1’s sales were bolstered by a range of merchandise/album bundles. Tory Lanez clocks his third consecutive top five-charting album, as his third release, Love Me Now?, starts at No. 4 with 54,000 units (5,000 in album sales). The bulk of Love’s first-week units were driven by streams, as it tallied 48,000 SEA units (translating to 62.5 million on-demand audio streams for the album’s tracks). Lanez previously hit the top five with his two earlier albums: Memories Don’t Die (No. 3; March 17) and I Told You (No. 4; Sept. 10, 2016). At No. 5 on the new Billboard 200, Lil Wayne’s former No. 1, Tha Carter V, is a non-mover with 52,000 units (down 20 percent). Lil Baby and Gunna’s Drip Harder is stationary at No. 6 with just over 49,000 units (down 13 percent) and Drake’s former leader Scorpion is steady at No. 7 with 49,000 (down 13 percent). Future and Juice WRLD’s collaborative effort WRLD ON DRUGS falls 2-8 in its second week (just over 45,000 units; down 54 percent), while a pair of former No. 1s round out the top 10: Travis Scott’s Astroworld sits still at No. 9 (45,000 units; down 4 percent) and Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys is steady at No. 10 (41,000 units; down 2 percent).

Joji's 'Ballads 1' Debuts at No. 1 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart
11/5/2018 by Trevor Anderson
Joji earns his first No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart as his Ballads 1 album opens atop the list dated Nov. 10. The set, the singer-songwriter’s first full-length album, earned 57,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Nov. 1, according to Nielsen Music.
Ballads, released through 88Rising/12Tone, likewise starts at No. 1 on the Top R&B Albums chart and, as previously reported, begins at No. 3 on the all-genre Billboard 200. (The Nov. 10-dated charts, which will reflect Ballads 1's debut, will publish on Billboard's website on Tuesday, Nov. 6.)

Outlaw. Traditional. Christmas. It's all covered on this week's rundown of the best pure album sales in country music. With nearly 14,000 albums sold, Josh Turner's lifelong dream has landed on top of the Soundscan Top Country Albums chart this week. His first Gospel album I Serve A Savior sits at #1 while Carrie Underwood's Cry Pretty sits at #2 with Pure sales nearly 331k to date (it's already certified Gold thanks to sales plus streaming numbers). Eric Church's Desperate Man is at #3 with sales at 133k plus. At #4 is a debut this week as Whitey Morgan sold over 4,400 copies of his latest album Hard Times And White Lines. Luke Combs' Platinum certified This One's For You (Too) sits at #5 this week. At #6 is Chris Stapleton's Traveller while From A Room: Volume 2 sits at #8 (Volume 1 is now a 'catalog' title and thus not on this chart anymore). In between Stapleton is Jason Isbell's #1 album from last week, Live From The Ryman. He's sold 16,500 copies in two weeks. At #9 is last week's #2 album, Jason Aldean's Rearview Town. Rounding out the Top 1o is Kane Brown's Platinum-certified debut album. His new album releases on Friday. Notable new releases making appearances this week include Chely Wright, Jamie Lin Wilson, Blackberry Smoke, Jessie James Decker and Dillon Carmichael. We also chronicle a sizable portion of the notables this week including Jimmie Allen, Morgan Evans, Scotty McCreery, Sugarland, John Prine, Cole Swindell Martina McBride, Daily & Vincent, Chris Young, Cody Jinks and more! Billboard 200 Chart Moves: John Legend & Pentatonix Debut in Top 40 With New 'Christmas' Albums 11/10/2018 by Keith Caulfield
Rich Polk/Getty Images for The Art of Elysium John Legend performs onstage at The Art Of Elysium's 11th Annual Celebration with John Legend at Barker Hangar on Jan. 6, 2018 in Santa Monica, Calif.
On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Nov. 10), Andrea Bocelli claimed his first No. 1 with Si. The set starts with 126,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Nov. 1, according to Nielsen Music. Of that figure, 123,000 were in traditional album sales. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).
Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200: — John Legend, A Legendary Christmas – No. 26 — John Legend’s first holiday album, A Legendary Christmas, rings in the season at No. 26 on the Billboard 200. The set, which includes new tunes and familiar holiday favorites like “Silver Bells,” starts with 20,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Nov. 1, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 19,000 were in album sales, boosted by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with his upcoming tour. Legendary is Legend’s eighth top 40-charting effort.
— Pentatonix, Christmas Is Here! – No. 33 — The vocal group’s latest holiday effort starts with 17,000 units (15,000 in album sales). Their first three seasonal offerings all reached the top 10, including the chart-topping A Pentatonix Christmas.
— Cher, Dancing Queen – No. 36 — The diva’s ABBA covers album is back on the list thanks to a surge in sales driven by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer. It earned 16,000 units (up 252 percent), of which nearly all were in album sales (up 284 percent).
— Michael Jackson, Thriller – No. 42 — With the Halloween holiday (Oct. 31) falling on a Wednesday in 2018, the latest Billboard 200 reflects a robust amount of impact from the holiday, as the chart’s tracking week ended on Nov. 1. An obvious benefactor of the spooky holiday is Michael Jackson’s former No. 1 Thriller, which bolts up the list 102-42 with 14,000 equivalent album units earned (up 83 percent). Most of its gain is owed to streaming, thanks in large part to the popularity of the set’s title track in the days leading up to Halloween. Incredibly,Thriller hasn’t been this high on the chart since Sept. 15, 1984, when it placed at No. 39. (Thriller was on the chart from its debut on Dec. 25, 1982 through April 20, 1985. Due to Thriller’s age, it was ineligible to chart until the list began allowing catalog titles to chart on Dec. 5, 2009.)
— Soundtrack, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas – No. 64 — The soundtrack to Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas — the rare album that doubles both as a Halloween and Christmas-themed effort — re-enters the Billboard 200 at No. 64. It tallied 11,000 units, up 130 percent. Over on the Soundtracks chart, it rises 11-4, while on the Top Holiday Albums chart it gets pushed back 2-3 despite its gain as John Legend and Pentatonix’s new Christmas efforts, A Legendary Christmas and Christmas Is Here!, debut at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.
— Thom Yorke, Suspiria: Music for the Luca Guadagnino Film (Soundtrack) – No. 79 — Thom Yorke’s soundtrack to Luca Guadagnino’s remake of Suspiria scares up debuts on multiple charts. The set, which is Yorke’s first film score, debuts at No. 79 on the Billboard 200 with 10,000 equivalent album units earned (with 9,000 of that sum in album sales). It also takes a bow at No. 5 on Soundtracks and No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart (4,000 LPs sold). It was also a hot seller at independent and small chain stores, as it enters at No. 2 on the Tastemakers chart, which is fueled by sales from those retailers. Yorke has previously visited the Billboard 200 once before as a soloist, with 2006’s No. 2-peaking The Eraser.
— Original Broadway Cast Recording, Wicked – No. 182 — The original Broadway cast recording of Wicked flies back onto the Billboard 200 for the first time in nearly four years. The set — which has sold 2.8 million copies in the U.S. — re-enters at No. 182 with 5,000 units (up 147 percent) thanks to buzz generated by NBC’s one-hour special A Very Wicked Halloween: Celebrating 15 Years on Broadway. The show aired on Oct. 29, one day before the musical’s 15th anniversary on Broadway, and featured performances of tunes from the show by its original stars, Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, as well as guests Ariana Grande, Adam Lambert, Ledisi and Pentatonix.
Wicked was last on the Billboard 200 dated Jan. 24, 2015 (No. 198).
