Beyoncé was on the way down with 4. It's a good album, don't get me wrong, but she tried the conventional thing and it wasn't working singles-wise. The surprise release thing has given her a decent reason why the singles from her self-titled and Lemonade didn't set the charts on fire, but I think EIL does count as a failure for her. Then again it was a collaboration album that most people didn't want so... we'll see when her next one comes out. NGL it annoys me when people try to pretend she was on a recent #1 with the "Perfect Duet" thing. That should have a massive asterisk next to it. Honestly I forgot that the duet version existed lol. Does the duet or the original play on radio? The original. The Duet got some play after release but it was never the top version on radio. CMAs yesterday might explain the country gains at iTunes (plus, you know, the difference between #40 and #10 is like 500 copies).

Off-topic perhaps, but does anyone know why Mariah's "Glitter" is #1 on iTunes? Her fans are running a "Justice For Glitter" campaign. Mariah has tweeted about it. It's not on Spotify so they are buying the album. It's only $4.99. I legit thought maybe everyone was convinced "Glitter" is her new album. That'd be funny.

^That's 6 weeks too many. Airplay will be gone in a decade anyway who cares lol They've been saying that for years. As long as there are people willing to tune in, and currently there are millions, radio will continue to exist.

There are more important things in life than worrying about the airplay record.

Does the duet or the original play on radio? I've only heard the duet version on urban radio, because that was the only way that format was gonna touch that song. Though I've only heard the original version a billion times on Pop and AC.

There are more important things in life than worrying about the airplay record. I'm glad to get back to my regular life. I haven't worked in weeks. I've been so upset that I had to call in and eventually quit. How could I work knowing there was a chance the ICONIC IRIS would lose its legendary record?

I don't even get the "Justice For Glitter" thing, like what justice? Justice was already served, the soundtrack and movie are both awful and the era was a mess. Glitter is the worst album of Mariah's career, it deserved to tank. That entire situation was a train wreck, why'd they wanna bring it back up?

Nor do all cars even come with an aux port. Hell, there's still plenty of places in the US where they don't have good enough internet for streaming. More people listen to the radio than you think. Sure, it's down, but it's nowhere near death yet either.

LOL first of all, I'm obviously kidding. Like I could really give two shits if Iris is #1 or not. Y'all get so damn PRESSED here. Mad when people are discussing things you don't wanna discuss. It is RELEVANT to the Airplay thread. It is active discussion. It's not some random thing.
But then you have people analyzing streams or spins down to the numbers when it involves THEIR favorite pop star lol 14 pages of "Will (insert) be #1?"... "Where will (insert) debut??" ...."omg it sold (insert) this week! let's add up how many streams it needs to debut"
like who cares, I'm going on and on about it because of how worked up people get. Block me or scroll past please. Thank U, NEXT.

I haven't put any stock in airplay totals in years. It's the only measured metric that barely has any legitimate consumer input. From payola to corporate playlists to ignored testing data. The corporate domination over multiple stations in a market and then those stations choosing to keep certain songs for certain formats is proof enough - particularly keeping most rap hits on Urban/Rhythmic and away from Pop to keep from stealing audience from the other two, etc.
At least with streaming and what's left of digital purchases, we know most is still driven by the listener. Radio is not.

She would have with Formation, but (to my knowledge) Apeshit had a conventional rollout and missed the top 10. She could easily perform similarly with a bad (solo) lead single. Beyoncé hasn't done a conventional rollout since her fourth album in 2011. Everything Is Love was released on a Sunday or something, only on TIDAL first, then just a digital release. IF that was a conventional rollout, she'd give a heads up and hype the release, sell OTR2 Tour ticket bundles with the album, and release it Thursday midnight like everyone else does lol. Also important to note that Apeshit wasn't very radio-friendly. I definitely feel like Beyoncé needs to revisit her old ways though, the surprise album trick is no longer working out. I would enjoy a traditional rollout for her, just unlikely

Glitter is the worst album of Mariah's career, it deserved to tank. That entire situation was a train wreck, why'd they wanna bring it back up? The circumstances surrounding that point in Mariah's career go far beyond a bad rollout for a campy movie. If you're not a hardcore lamb it's kind of not worth explaining b/c w already know nonfans don't typically care about details, but it's not so much about the movie/music itself as it is the personal drama and how shitty the press was to her at the time. Glitter was the original Blackout, and stans are always protective and defensive of their faves in those moments.

That's still crazy that "Girls Like You" is the longest running airplay #1 (and beat "We Belong Together") since Billboard incorporated R&B into their airplay charts

Beyoncé was on her way down, but I think with the self-titled release she reached a new generation and managed to stay relevant. She has great power in the industry; whatever she does becomes the next trend. (I am not saying she invents things, but it is factual that surprise releases, visual albums, and even the idea of a 'New Music Friday' can be attributed to her to some extent.) She just needs to be more creative with her rollout strategy now and not repeat the same thing. And yes, Beyonce's last 'hit' was "7/11". I don't think she cares.
