Beyoncé was on the way down with 4. It's a good album, don't get me wrong, but she tried the conventional thing and it wasn't working singles-wise. The surprise release thing has given her a decent reason why the singles from her self-titled and Lemonade didn't set the charts on fire, but I think EIL does count as a failure for her. Then again it was a collaboration album that most people didn't want so... we'll see when her next one comes out. NGL it annoys me when people try to pretend she was on a recent #1 with the "Perfect Duet" thing. That should have a massive asterisk next to it. 100% agree with everything you said. Beyoncé was on her way down, but I think with the self-titled release she reached a new generation and managed to stay relevant. She has great power in the industry; whatever she does becomes the next trend. (I am not saying she invents things, but it is factual that surprise releases, visual albums, and even the idea of a 'New Music Friday' can be attributed to her to some extent.) She just needs to be more creative with her rollout strategy now and not repeat the same thing. And yes, Beyonce's last 'hit' was "7/11". I don't think she cares. Idk I’d argue formation was her last hit. Radio wise it still went top 2 on urban

If Lemonade had been on other streaming services like spotify and apple music then this would’ve been a completely different story

At least the video got loads of love.

Drunk in love was a hit and so was partition. Oh and flawless had some impact too tbh. If none of that happened she’d be as big as iggy 2018 right now .. jk lmao but u kno what i mean

I haven't put any stock in airplay totals in years. It's the only measured metric that barely has any legitimate consumer input. From payola to corporate playlists to ignored testing data. Remember when Drake was on every playlist that existed on the front page of Spotify? Seems legit.

Also, in a lot of those playlists, he didn't have any actual songs IN the playlists, just his pictures on them, but keep cooking.

I woke up this morning, and as I waited for my coffee to pour and listened to the sweet sounds of Mariah Carey's GLITTER to prepare for her new album, I laid down on the kitchen floor and prayed to Jesus, my Lord and Savior, to let GLY fall over 2 million impressions today. My wish was granted. Thank you for being there for me during these struggles Jesus!

I really hope that Happier can sneak in a quick week at #1 before High Hopes takes over. What a bummer for Bastille to miss out if that's how it plays out.

If Ariana releases her album in a week or two, it will be absolutely massive. It could be bigger than Sweetener.

I haven't put any stock in airplay totals in years. It's the only measured metric that barely has any legitimate consumer input. From payola to corporate playlists to ignored testing data. The corporate domination over multiple stations in a market and then those stations choosing to keep certain songs for certain formats is proof enough - particularly keeping most rap hits on Urban/Rhythmic and away from Pop to keep from stealing audience from the other two, etc. At least with streaming and what's left of digital purchases, we know most is still driven by the listener. Radio is not. How are corporate playlists on radio any different from Today's Top Hits? That playlist can literally mean life or death for some songs. All metrics are influenced by labels, money, promotion, etc... Discounts on iTunes? Corporate decision. Deals with Spotify a la Drake during Scorpion week? Corporate deicision. Also, there's a degree of consumer input on radio. Pop radio wanted to take hits like "Work" and "NO" to the top, with massive bullets, but once listener feedback came back, they stalled. Look at past radio darlings like Alessia Cara or Meghan Trainor. Sure, they can reach top 30 on their core formats on name alone, but once negative listener feedback comes back they crash out. People keep acting like radio is making "Girls Like You" this monster hit on payola when it clearly reasonated with an audience. Is it mostly an older, less vocal audience that enjoys more conventional (i.e. generic, safe, comfortable junk food) stuff? Sure, but an audience is an audience.

Oh, I know, it was very ridiculous. I'm glad Spotify got a pushback on that move because if they hadn't, loads of artists would have started getting the same treatment. I guess they did that as a last-minute attempt to catch up to Apple Music seeing as they got the Scorpion album 8 hours AFTER it dropped. Apple and Spotify always prioritize Drake releases as far as promotion goes because he always breaks records on their platforms and that's good publicity for them.
