Mariah has so much better stuff than "One Sweet Day". I'm guessing that in the end the fact that it was two huge acts collaborating made the difference for it.
Kinda like a Drake x Maroon 5 track in 2018. Would the streaming fans call that another travesty when streaming died and airplay kept it at #1 too?

I haven't put any stock in airplay totals in years. It's the only measured metric that barely has any legitimate consumer input. From payola to corporate playlists to ignored testing data. The corporate domination over multiple stations in a market and then those stations choosing to keep certain songs for certain formats is proof enough - particularly keeping most rap hits on Urban/Rhythmic and away from Pop to keep from stealing audience from the other two, etc. At least with streaming and what's left of digital purchases, we know most is still driven by the listener. Radio is not. How are corporate playlists on radio any different from Today's Top Hits? That playlist can literally mean life or death for some songs. All metrics are influenced by labels, money, promotion, etc... Discounts on iTunes? Corporate decision. Deals with Spotify a la Drake during Scorpion week? Corporate deicision. Also, there's a degree of consumer input on radio. Pop radio wanted to take hits like "Work" and "NO" to the top, with massive bullets, but once listener feedback came back, they stalled. Look at past radio darlings like Alessia Cara or Meghan Trainor. Sure, they can reach top 30 on their core formats on name alone, but once negative listener feedback comes back they crash out. People keep acting like radio is making "Girls Like You" this monster hit on payola when it clearly reasonated with an audience. Is it mostly an older, less vocal audience that enjoys more conventional (i.e. generic, safe, comfortable junk food) stuff? Sure, but an audience is an audience. 1. I said 'most is driven' - not all. 2. Discounts - still up to the consumer to BUY the track - no one is forcing them to do it. 3. Streaming Playlists - definitely moving closer to radio, BUT the listener is a) choosing to add playlist and, most importantly, b) can skip past a song - you can't do that on radio - so it's still a choice. If the listener is too lazy to skip over bad songs, it's still a choice.

LOL first of all, I'm obviously kidding. Like I could really give two shits if Iris is #1 or not. Y'all get so damn PRESSED here. Mad when people are discussing things you don't wanna discuss. It is RELEVANT to the Airplay thread. It is active discussion. It's not some random thing. But then you have people analyzing streams or spins down to the numbers when it involves THEIR favorite pop star lol 14 pages of "Will (insert) be #1?"... "Where will (insert) debut??" ...."omg it sold (insert) this week! let's add up how many streams it needs to debut" like who cares, I'm going on and on about it because of how worked up people get. Block me or scroll past please. Thank U, NEXT. lol. the fact that people thought you were serious is what was funny.

Pretty sure Ari has the #1 in the bag for the next couple of weeks Yeah I think happier is gonna be blocked from number one, By the time TYN drops Without Me is going to be ahead of happier since happier is gonna peak on every metric very soon

feel like topanga could be top 10 in 2 or 3 weeks Way too weak. Won’t even hit the top 10 off an album boost. Maybe top 50 tho.

Anyone feel like Ariana is going to suffer from overexposure?
It literally feels like she just started the "Sweetner" era, and she's going to release a new album already?!

You act like this is the first time this is happening. She only has 3 songs that she is pushing. A person suffering from overexposure is Drake. People are a little sick of hearing him. He needs a 6-8 month break and people will be ready to hear him again. Ariana is doing fine

This will make her more popular, if anything. There have been quite a few artists to have 3 hit songs at the same time (Rihanna, Drake, Justin Bieber) and it benefitted them. And in Rihanna's case, she went for seemingly years whilst always having at least 1 hit single out at any one time. With Ariana it hasn't even been a year yet. Also, she'll probably have another flop single like Everyday or Baby I at some point which will act kind of like a break lol.

Ariana is not pushed 3 songs at pop radio. GIAW is over, the push is done. It's just 'Breathin' and 'Thank U, Next' now.

On another note, is there a list of songs that were #1 for rolling charts, but never made the published chart? It might happen a lot, so maybe it isn't relevant to see this sort of list... but it is sort of a bummer that someone like Bastille, who will probably never get this sort of attention from mainstream again was/is so close to missing #1.

This week, GLY or Happier will probably top radio with less than 100M AI. P!nk's Blow Me is the only song this decade to do that (98M - Sep. 29, 2012).

Overexposure tends to kill pop careers. Strangely, it hasn't seemed to effect Urban acts in the last 20 years.

Good to see that High Hopes might leapfrog Happier. It would be a shame to see two boring basic songs at number 1 on radio back to back.

Honestly, I think that we're living in the era of "thank u, next"
It hasn't felt like music has mostly centered around one song for a few weeks in a long while.
Idk if everyone will understand what I mean, but I just feel like everything right now is about "thank u, next" and not about any other song.

Overexposure tends to kill pop careers. Strangely, it hasn't seemed to effect Urban acts in the last 20 years. Because us urban fans are attracted and used to a rapper's discography. Plus the fact that most rappers release at least 1 project a year makes their new music fresh. Pop music does not have the fresh factor due to all of it sounding the same. Do you see still lots of people bumping songs like Motorsport or Passionfruit at a party? Most of the time you might hear new songs at a party or a club.
