The chart run of this song was always really interesting to me: 33-10-9-10-11- Entering at #33, jumping to #10 in its second week, and beginning its descent soon after. But, it managed to last 20 weeks on the chart to make it to recurrent status. It's also surprising to me that it lasted this long here. It's always seemed pretty forgettable to me within the context of Garth's discography.

I remember when "It's Your Song" came out and when the Double Live album first released. Have always loved this song so I'm glad it lasted this far, honestly didn't expect it to.

Next up, another song with a very bizarre chart run, but for a very different reason.

The song had a high debut, and quickly rose into the 20s on the airplay chart. However, the song's chart run coincided with September 11th, and Garth thought it was inappropriate to be promoting a fun party song as a single, so he switched gears and sent "Wrapped Up In You" to radio instead. That effectively cut "Beer Run"'s chart run short, peaking at #24.

Next, we lose a lead single from a studio album. Will it be "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)", "Friends In Low Places", "Rodeo", "We Shall Be Free", "Ain't Goin' Down (Til The Sun Comes Up)", "She's Every Woman", "Longneck Bottle" or "Wrapped Up In You"?

PLEASE be "Longneck Bottle" or "Wrapped Up In You", both have overstayed.
"Wild Horses" is definitely a bizarre situation altogether lol, did not know about "Beer Run" though so never would have guessed that.

I'm shocked so many people didn't like "Good Ride Cowboy."

It peaked at #12, becoming Garth's first single to miss the top 10. The first 13 singles of Garth's career all made the top 10, most of them reaching #1. The song carries a message of tolerance and acceptance, and was inspired by the 1992 LA riots. The video, which won Video of the Year at the 1993 ACMs, featuring many celebrities, including Reba McEntire, Elizabeth Taylor, Jay Leno and Lily Tomlin. It was always in the middle of the pack here, never contending for the bottom, but also never making a run at anything higher than this.

"We Shall Be Free" broke Garth's career beginning 13 song top 10 streak. One of those 13 songs is the next to leave us at #37.

I'm a little shocked to see us lose one of his career-defining mega-hits already, but if one of them had to leave, I am THRILLED it was "We Shall Be Free"! (It may have missed the top 10, but I still consider it to be one of his defining songs, alongside most of the other songs that made his first Hits album). That has always been one of my least favorite of his big hits, for whatever reason. I think the lyrics are trite and unimaginative, and the melody isn't enough to make up for it. I was shocked when it ended up so low on my list, but now I am also shocked I wasn't the lowest ranker for it!
As far as what could leave next from his early-career, it HAS to be "Not Counting You"...

As far as what could leave next from his early-career, it HAS to be "Not Counting You"... I didn't see this beforehand because I was typing up my post, but you got it! Next up, we see a song that become a single in a different decade than its parent album was released. I have to head out now, but I hope to come back to this later on tonight. It might not be until Monday or Tuesday though.

WOW!!!

I've been following along with the reveals but haven't had the time to come back around and comment so I've got some catching up to do! “Hard Luck Woman” and “Workin’ for a Livin’” (#61 and #60): I had both of these placed in the bottom 2 and deservedly so…never enjoyed either of these songs “Midnight Sun” (#57): This was mentioned as a low impact single and I couldn’t agree more because honestly I don’t even remember how this song goes… “Mom” (#55): As someone who lost their mother all too soon I always found this song easy to connect with, but even still it isn’t one I ever go out of my way to listen to so not at all surprised to see it out near the bottom 5 “All Day Long” (#52): I have a feeling this song isn’t going to age well as it already wore out on me pretty fast. Maybe it’s just me but when I first heard George Strait’s new single “Every Little Honky Tonk Bar” I found myself comparing these two because they’re both about honky-tonks and of course George does it much, much better “The Fever” (#50): This really should be the kind of song that I wouldn’t like, but I’ve always somewhat considered this a guilty pleasure and I may have underranked this one just a tad. I remember when this was first released and it's a song that I found myself jamming out to a lot when I was younger lol…glad to see this got some top 30 support “The Change” (#46): Wasn’t expecting this to do much better than where it landed but I still was hoping it would make the top 40…this is another favorite song of mine from Fresh Horses and I can really connect with the lyrics “Thicker Than Blood” (#45): I reconnected with this song during sabre14 ’s 2002 Rankdown and found myself appreciating it a lot more now than I remember back when I was a bit younger “You Move Me” (#44): I still don’t quite understand how this ended up coming in dead last in the 1998 rankdown and I’m glad to see I’m not the only one that enjoys it. This song always takes me back to some cold snowy nights in ’98 and I love the overall mood this song sets but to each their own… “We Shall Be Free” (#38): Garth’s always been a bit on the progressive side politically and I remember this song being a bit controversial at the time because of the video and the lyrics (such as the When we're free to love, anyone we choose line). Again to each their own but I enjoy the overall message of this song. “Not Counting You” (#37): This song always takes me back to when I was growing up and first discovering country music. I remember watching the This Is Garth Brooks special on TV and thought it was so cool seeing Garth enter the stage from an elevator that opened up and jumping right into performing “Not Counting You”. Not sure why this has been mostly forgotten and it also wasn’t included in his first hits compilation The Hits. I do still hear this occasionally on the radio down here in Texas, though.

The album, released in November of 1997, had an odd singles release strategy: August 1997: "In Another's Eyes" (duet with Trisha, on Sevens, but released as a single from her own Songbook: A Collection Of HitsNovember 1997: "Longneck Bottle" (official lead single from Sevens) January 1998: "She's Gonna Make It" (second single from Sevens) March 1998: "Two Pina Coladas" (third single from Sevens) May 1998: "To Make You Feel My Love" (single from the Hope Floats soundtrack) July 1998: "Burnin' The Roadhouse Down" (duet single from Steve Wariner's Burnin' The Roadhouse Down album) August 1998: "You Move Me" (fourth single from Sevens) September 1998: "Where Your Road Leads" (duet single from Trisha Yearwood's Where Your Road Leads album) November 1998: "It's Your Song" (lead and only single from Double Live) July 1999: "It Don't Matter To The Sun" (only country radio single from In The Life Of Chris Gaines) January 2000: "Do What You Gotta Do" (fifth and final single from Sevens) So, from the release of "In Another's Eyes" to "Do What You Gotta Do", 11 Garth single/features were sent to country radio, despite only five being official singles from the Sevens project. On a personal note, my local radio station opted not to play "Longneck Bottle", and instead played this one in its place as the lead single in November 1997. I've always really loved this one, and was disappointed to see it out so soon.

I really enjoy "Do What You Gotta Do" a lot and am sad to see it out this early but I expected it unfortunately.
Gonna guess that we are gonna see "It's Midnight Cinderella" next, as I cannot see any of the other 3 going out this early

I’ve never been a fan of “Do What You Gotta Do” and it has long been one of my least favorite singles Garth has released.
I used to really enjoy “It’s Midnight Cinderella” but it simply hasn’t aged well and tbh with lyrics such as I'm Peter Peter the Pumpkin Eater I find it to be a bit on the corny side now.
Considering the next reveal is the first #1 single loss of the rankdown I’m going to guess it’ll be “American Honky-Tonk Bar Association” .

Ok I'm shocked "It's Midnight Cinderella" and "Beer Run" both top 10's for my list are out before the top 30. I thought they were well loved amongst his discography!!! bboat11 I thought "You Move Me" only got tanked to the bottom of that rankdown because it wasn't available to listen to anywhere. I fully think it would've done better if it was able to be listened to. For the record I like the message of "We Shall Be Free", I just really hate the rest of the song. Melody, musically, vocally it all just doesn't work for me.

We'll keep losing #1s until we hit make it to the top 30. Next up, a quick rising single featuring a prominent background vocal.

Steve Wariner is prominently featured on background vocals of this song. Due to "In Another's Eyes" acting as a placeholder for this album, "Longneck Bottle" was only sent to radio a few days before the Sevens album was released, at the end of November 1997. The song flew up the charts, reaching #1 in December 1997. I've never been a huge fan of this one. It's not bad by any means, but just never one of my favourites of his.
