Most people would agree that Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Madonna, and Mariah Carey are legends. What is your definition of a legend? What distinguishes these artists from other successful artists that are not legends?

IMO, Lionel Richie is a legend. Love him or hate him, you can't deny that he isn't one. He had a huge impact in the 80s especially in R&B. That's an example since I know that a lot of people here don't really like his songs. Doesn't mean that he isn't one.

There is no definite definition. True legends have a 20 plus year career, undeniable influence musically and classic material that stand the test of time.
Examples of Legends : Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Prince, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Elton John, Madonna, Britney, U2 etc
Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Rhianna ,Adele are not legends. They are icons.
Justin Timberlake is neither.

Most legends have something happen that puts them over the top, for example, Michael Jacksons Moonwalk, or the Thriller music video. Whitney Houston singing The Star Spangled Banner and The Bodyguard era. Elton John singing Candle In The Wind at Princess Diana's funeral and the song Staying at #1 for 14 weeks.

This might be my least favourite discussion topic on Pulse.
The topic itself doesn't bother me, and I enjoy discussing it occasionally. However, there are way too many threads on this legend/icon shit right now. We need a break from it.

Legends are people that are remembered for something. They are unique and are kind of the standard. Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Beyonce, Madonna, Rihanna, Michael jackson, Prince, Kurt cobain, The beatles, Amy whinehouse, Janis joplin, Rolling stones etc. are legendary musical acts. They stick out from the rest. Ariana grande is an icon for sure tho. She is literally the best singer out rn.

Legends are people whose body of works are well known especially within their genres and in music in general. They may be imitated but their style can never be duplicated. There are loads of legends and I won’t list any because I might keep editing this post forever

I believe legends are the standards for which others are compared and have had an undeniable impact on the industry. I’d say the current legends from this current generation would be Beyoncé, Britney, lil Kim, jay z, Eminem, r.kelly , Kanye. Though I detest the last two lol

What is the difference between a "legend" and an "icon"? I think an icon is more of a splash on the industry, not really a landmark. I.e. Avril Lavigne, xtina, maroon 5, Justin Timberlake, culture club, Toni braxton

It's about time more than anything. A singer has to age 10-20 years past their peaks and still they and their hits are remembered fondly by most people (on top of having been fairly influential on the next generation of artists). That's why young/new artists can never really be called 'legends.'
