NEW RELEASES: BSB = BFD Backstreet Boys will debut at #1 next Friday on the strength of a ticket bundle that could make up over 80% of the first week number, confirming that more than two decades into their career, the band’s fanbase remains devoted. Here’s what we have today. Backstreet Boys (K-Bahn/RCA) 185-210k total activity, 180-205k album Bring Me The Horizon (Columbia) 15-20k, 11-14k In political-irony news, the Nixon Foundation has clarified that Roger Stone was too young to have played a significant role in Nixon's campaigns. Unfortunately, they have no tapes to prove it. hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=314970&title=NEW-RELEASES%3ABSB-%3D-BFD

I don't see what's wrong with ticket bundles. It's still a reflection of music popularity. Their last album sold 48,000 first week. Sure, not a ton but still a decent amount showing fans are still somewhat interested in their newer music.

I knew that the Backstreet Boys album could do well with a ticket album bundle although the projected album sales are much more than I expected.

Wow. I had no idea 40-something soccer moms were such influencers! Seriously, it’s not like this project completely based on the tour - BSB is getting CHR play, which is fricking remarkable.
The bundle is no less valid than Top 10 albums that only sell under 1K albums (3 last week) and rely TEA and SEA to get them there.

Great for BSB. Ticket bundle or not (plus, isn't it nice to see an album sell more than 3k?)

Kinda amazing to see those figures next to BSB in 2019. Really can’t be undermined because the demand is there regardless, whether it’s in streams or in their case, ticket sales.
If someone said 5 years ago that Backstreet Boys would debut with the same numbers as Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga(?) and Katy Perry’s latest albums, i-

Whoa, I didn't know BSB were still this big. I thought they were completely gone by the mid-2000s.

Safe to say the use of merch/ticket bundles is a normalised practice in the music industry now, no? My only issue with it is that it isn't a meausre of actual interest in the album being consumed. Loads of people copped Travis Scott's tour merch and got a free album attached that counted on the Billboard 200. An album anyone can access on any of the major streaming platforms. All this will do is cause pure sale figures to mean less and less since anyone can game the system to boost their pure sale figures.

We talked about this in Nov/Dec: hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=314975&title=NEAR-TRUTHS%3A-Q4-RECONSIDERED-AND-THE-GRAMMY-GAPNEAR TRUTHS: Q4 RECONSIDEREDTHE FOURTH QUARTER IS NO LONGER THE GAME: Q4, once the boiling point of yearly music-marketplace activity, no longer looks meaningful in the overall annual revenue picture. In fact, the goalposts have been moved and the two-minute drill starts now. Release dates now revolve around touring cycles—and acts that are hot at the top of the year can go wire-to-wire. With physical retail now a niche market and the holidays now dominated by gadgets and gift cards, the album as stocking stuffer is over. What’s more, artists have begun to embrace a new model of releasing music that conforms to a subscription-heavy and social-media-saturated world: doling out tracks periodically over the course of the year to maintain fanbase cohesion. Just take a look at Ariana Grande, who has dropped new music on a continual basis and will have a new album in the marketplace two days before the Grammys; her prior set remains a giant, and she has two songs in the Top 5 at Pop radio as well as a brand-new, apparently even bigger one at #1 on Spotify’s U.S. and Global charts and #2 at Apple Music and iTunes. With Q4 so radically diminished in importance, Q1 now appears to be where the action is. Get out of the box early in the year, establish a lead and keep turning out music. Ariana, Drake, Post, Future and other recent market rulers understand that going “off-cycle” in the traditional way now looks like ceding the field.

It’s been nearly 20 years since The Backstreet Boys last had a #1 album, 2000’s Black & Blue. This week, DNA, their ninth studio album, returns the band to the top. Ticket buyers can opt to not get the new album- and some do. It's not like every single ticket buyer redeems a copy of the album. This is a way to ensure that people who are more fans of the act's older music, possibly, will give a listen to the new material.
And, yes, it's always great to see a healthy album-sales total.
Weezer looks like it will land in the multi-metric top 10 next week- if so, I will remove it from the listing in the "feats" thread.

CHART STORY: SUCCESS IS IN THEIR DNA RCA’s Backstreet Boys have debuted at #1 on the HITS Top 50 Chart, moving 236k+ with their ninth studio album—and first in six years—DNA. Ron Laffitte is doing some joyous choreography as you read this. The only other bow to make the Top 15 belongs to Columbia’s Bring Me the Horizon, whose amo lands at #14 with approximately 27k. Weezer’s Weezer (Teal Album) (Crush Music) enjoys a crazy-big bump this week, actually marking its first full week. The album, which dropped by surprise on a Wednesday night/Thursday morning, originally debuted on the chart last week, after just one day of reporting. It consequently travels #29-4, tacking on 40k. Further down, a similar move is made by XXXTentacion’s XXXTentacion Presents: Members Only, Vol. 4 (Bad Vibes Forever/Empire), which was also only available for about a day the prior week; that goes #38-15 with 27k. And as Oscar and Grammy buzz grows, Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born Soundtrack (Interscope) jumps #10-5 with nearly 40k. When it comes to marketshare, SME and UMG tie at #1 with 33% each, WMG follows with 26% and the indies claim 8%. This is a pretty slow week as far as new releases go. Streeting the following week, however, are Ariana Grande’s thank u, next (Republic) and Michael Bolton’s A Symphony of Hits (eOne). No word yet on when the Ari X Bolton collaborative set is coming, but we’re sure their mash-up of “thank, u next” and “When a Man Loves a Woman” will unite the generations. hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=315039&title=CHART-STORY%3A-SUCCESS-IS-IN-THEIR-DNA
