Rihanna dropping an album the same day as Ariana would be a trainwreck on all accounts, so, yeah, no, I object to that sentiment. Ideally, 2/22 lead single (avoids Ariana and the Zedd/Katy track, only competition would be Lil Pump's much smaller album bomb) and 3/15 album (literally no competition).

I don’t believe Rihanna will follow suit with her previous album and release it the same day as the single, or even the same week for that matter and I highly doubt her team would ever allow her to release within the same time frame as Ariana Grande (although Rihanna’s release dates in the past have been a complete mess).
If anything, she will (she should) release the lead single first followed by the album several weeks later.
Either way...

YES, YES & YES. “ANTI” wasn’t planned to be officially released until the week of her birthday (according to her vocal engineer) but due to the TIDAL leak she spontaneously released it that day. To this day I feel that the album was leaked on purpose (that company is as FRADULENT as ever and nothing more than a personal platform for Jay-Z and his Wife) but Rihanna got the last laugh in the end “ANTI” turned into a 2-week #1, 157-week charting album with SPS units of +7M moved WW as of 2019. Now if she releases #R9 to Spotify and AM all on the same day.... I-

Yea tbh if things goes right I see Rihanna album being released 5 months after the lead so the album debuts gold or platinum

It’s rumored to be a reggae album, right? That is what was “said/discussed” in 2017, and even early this year, but knowing Rihanna the concept has probably changed. Nonetheless, if it is more focused on her ‘roots’ ‘music and Dancehall etc. then I’m more than ready and willing. Also, it’s been heavily rumoured that the album is either in two parts or volumes.

Rihanna's response to a post on Instagram suggesting she was done recording her follow-up to ANTi: "it ain't done till it's done sis". I get people being eager and excited for new music from her, but maybe wait to get information directly from the source itself? The music won't be released till she's ready to release it, regardless of whether she's really done making the album or not. http://instagram.com/p/BtXS9JmhZmZ

In fact it's probably much lower now thanks to the rise of streaming services, where it's obviously not available. There are literal millions of people who have not heard and likely don't even know it's coming until Spotify notifies them. Zedd and Katy both have large followings, so its first week is going to be strong whether it leaked three weeks in advance or not. Sure, a new Rihanna track probably would perform stronger, but let's not act like both releasing the same day wouldn't detract from each other. That would be a delusional thought. Anyone who thinks any two A-listers releasing the same day wouldn't hurt each other has lost grip on reality. The music industry is a business and a business wants to always maximize profits and visibility. That's not going to happen when you have multiple big names releasing on the same day.

Can't competition drive up album consumption? Pretty sure it did that for Utada Hikaru vs. Ayumi Hamasaki and Justin Bieber vs. One Direction.

Can bury a friend sneak a week in the top 20? It seems possible, streaming numbers are going up! #13 on AM, and I'm sure with it being #1 on Today's Top Hits it will probably be top 5 on Spotify tomorrow. I think it will probably do a lot better than "sneak a week in the top 20".

It not 2013 Katy is definitely no longer an A lister Lol, okay. She's literally one of the highest paid female musicians and her latest tour did well. One album era that isn't super successful does not instantly kill one's career. And if I recall, CTTR and Witness both did well in their first weeks while the two "flop" singles still did really well in streaming, especially when their videos dropped. Someone who isn't a top celebrity isn't going to have that. Hell, she just had a Christmas track reach #53 on the Hot 100, and it was only available on Amazon. Amazon. Not Spotify, not Apple Music, not Google Play, not YouTube, not Pandora, not even Tidal. Amazon, one of the least popular music streaming services. And she still had that big of a draw for a cheesy Christmas track. If that's not enough proof to you that millions of people are still checking for Katy Perry, then you're a lost cause and this conversation is over because I'm not talking to a brick wall. Anyway, for what it's worth, Rihanna confirmed those were just rumors.

Holiday songs shouldn't be used as a barometer for general popularity. Look at Pentatonix. I think that's not a fair comparison. They're not a traditional group by any means and don't have many original songs anyway. Plus their first mainstream hit was a Christmas song, so that's really what they're known for, which is all vastly different from most of the other artists with Christmas hits. Hell, I'm struggling to think of a traditional modern artist with a Christmas hit, but aren't very popular themselves.
