Jason Aldean Extends Country Airplay Rule, Dan + Shay Double Up Atop Hot Country Songs Again
2/5/2019 by Jim Asker
Plus, Midland gains their second top 10 on Country Airplay.
Jason Aldean's "Girl Like You" holds the top spot for a second straight week on Billboard's Country Airplay chart (dated Feb. 9), pulling in 40.1 million audience impressions (up 2 percent) in the week ending Feb. 3, according to Nielsen Music.
On the airplay-, streaming- and sales-powered Hot Country Songs chart, "Girl" enters the top five, climbing 7-5.
Aldean's 20th Country Airplay leader is the third single and third No. 1 from his album Rearview Town, which debuted atop the all-genre Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums charts last April.
"Girl" marks Aldean's third straight multi-week leader on Country Airplay, following "You Make It Easy," which led for two weeks starting on the May 5, 2018-dated list, and "Drowns the Whiskey" (featuring Miranda Lambert), which dominated for two frames starting in August.
Aldean is the first artist to rattle off three straight multi-week leaders on Country Airplay since Brett Young, whose "In Case You Didn't Know" paced the survey for two frames beginning June 10, 2017; followed by "Like I Loved You," which led for three weeks beginning Jan. 3, 2018; and "Mercy," which claimed the summit for two frames last August. (The latest from Young, "Here Tonight," rises 19-16 on the tally, up 13 percent to 15.7 million in radio reach.)
Meanwhile, the last artist to produce more than three straight multi-week Country Airplay leaders is Blake Shelton, who snapped off five in a row. Shelton was in the middle of a streak of 17 consecutive Country Airplay leaders at the time (counting only officially promoted, non-seasonal singles), a run that started with 2010's "Hillbilly Bone" (featuring Trace Adkins).
Shelton's five successive multi-week leaders began with 2011's "Honey Bee" (four weeks at No. 1) and continued with "God Gave Me You" (three, 2011); "Drink on It" (two, 2012); "Over" (two, 2012); and "Sure Be Cool If You Did" (two, 2013).
DOUBLE FOR THE DUO Dan + Shay, the tandem of Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney, hold the top two spots on Hot Country Songs for an eighth frame.
"Tequila" reigns for a second week. On last week's Feb. 2-dated list, the song rose 2-1, completing a record 54-week trip to the top, becoming the pair's second leader. The song reached the apex after a 19-week wait at No. 2, the most time that any title has been second-best in the chart's history.
Dan + Shay dethroned themselves when "Tequila" reached the top of the tally, with their follow-up hit "Speechless" moving from No. 1 to No. 2 after dominating Hot Country Songs for nine frames. "Speechless" ranks at No. 2 for a second week.
"Tequila" holds atop Hot Country Songs as it ranks at No. 3 on Country Streaming Songs (10.1 million U.S. streams, up 3 percent) and No. 6 on Country Digital Song Sales (6,000 sold, down 10 percent). "Tequila," which topped Country Airplay for two weeks last July, continues to reap the benefit of pop radio crossover play. The track ranks at No. 19 on Adult Contemporary and No. 21 on Pop Songs, after reaching No. 10 on Adult Pop Songs in November.
"Speechless" ruled Country Airplay for four frames starting Dec. 22 and is just beginning to grow beyond its home format, debuting at No. 39 on the new, Feb. 9-dated Adult Pop Songs chart.
With "Tequila" and "Speechless" at Nos. 1 and 2 on Hot Country Songs, respectively, Dan + Shay hold the two top spots for an eighth week, marking the second-best such run in the chart's history and the most among duos. Luke Bryan controlled the top two slots simultaneously for nine weeks in 2014.
"All to Myself" is Dan + Shay's newest country radio single, and the third from the duo's self-titled third LP. The set debuted as the pair's second No. 1 on Top Country Albums last July.
BURNING UP Midland banks its second Country Airplay top 10, as "Burn Out" rises 11-10 (23.4 million, up 2 percent). The song is the trio's third appearance, following its debut single "Drinkin' Problem," which peaked at No. 3 in 2017. Their second single, "Make a Little" reached No. 15 in January 2018.

Most Oscar song nominees aren't big hits, but one major exception happened in 1984. All 5 songs nominated for Best Original Song (Phil Collins' "Against All Odds", Kenny Loggins' "Footloose", Deniece Williams' "Let's Hear For The Boy", Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called To Say I Love You" and Ray Parker's "Ghostbusters") topped the Hot 100. It was the only time that ever happened. Oddly, while Prince won an Oscar for 'Best Original Song Score' that year, none of the songs from 'Purple Rain' were nominated for Best Song. That's very coincidental and surprising for all the #1 song nominees that year! And Prince's win reminds me very much of Shallow's nomination this year: It's the opposite situation where the lead song/hit is nominated, but not the entire score for a movie that is so highly regarded for its music. Is it because songs don't count as part of the "score," that that only refers to backing instrumentals? It can't be because the other songs just aren't that good, so it must be some other quirk... Yeah, I think "score" is for the instrumental music. Pop soundtracks were so prevalent in the 80s that a separate "song score" category was added, which is what Prince won for, but unfortunately that category was discontinued.

James Ingram's Song Sales Skyrocket 6,500% Following His Death 2/5/2019 by Trevor Anderson
The R&B veteran’s catalog lands six entries on the R&B Digital Song Sales chart.
The late James Ingram populates the R&B Digital Song Sales chart – and accounts for half of the top 10 – as fans revisit the singer's catalog after his death. Six tracks debut on the survey dated Feb. 9, led by a No. 2 opening for “Just Once (New Version).” The track is a 1999 rerecording of the same song that Ingram cut for Quincy Jones for the latter’s 1981 album, The Dude. “Once” sold 6,000 copies in the week ending Jan. 31, according to Nielsen Music, drastically up from a negligible figure in the previous frame.
Ingram died on Jan. 29 at age 66 of brain cancer. News of his death drew tributes from Jones, Gladys Knight and Debbie Allen, among others.
Besides “Once,” Ingram’s two biggest crossover hits also land in the top 10 on R&B Digital Song Sales. His duet with Patti Austin, “Baby, Come to Me,” starts at No. 4; the recording topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in 1983. The 1999 new version of his other Hot 100 leader, 1990’s “I Don’t Have The Heart,” debuts at No. 7.
Two renditions of “One Hundred Ways” round out Ingram’s top 10 takeover: The new version begins at No. 6, while the original, billed to Quincy Jones featuring James Ingram, enters at No. 10. The latter won Ingram a Grammy Award for best R&B vocal performance, male, in 1982.
Ingram captured his second and final statuette to date with a victory in 1985 for best R&B performance by a duo or group with vocal alongside Michael McDonald on “Yah Mo B There.” The collaboration also debuts on R&B Digital Song Sales this week, at No. 17.
The flurry of activity surrounding Ingram on the chart mirrors overall gains for the singer’s catalog: His total track sales surged to 24,000 in the week ending Jan. 31, according to Nielsen Music, up nearly 6,500 percent compared with the previous week. Streams, too, rallied 1,100 percent to 3.9 million in the same period.

Pop soundtracks were so prevalent in the 80s that a separate "song score" category was added, which is what Prince won for, but unfortunately that category was discontinued. Oh, that makes sense then.

'Tequila'
Cumulative 47th chart week
38 weeks in the original run last at #45 in the 12-08 chart
Looks like had it not been for the Christmas song chart takeover, this song may not have ever gone recurrent
8 weeks on the recurrent chart falling as far as #4 on 1/5/19 ( Christmas songs were the top 3)
now at #29 in week 39 on the Hot 100

Enigma- how exactly is a No. 23 peak at top 40 radio zero pop support? :)
EDIT: I gather you mean at the present time. I hadn't noticed, but it looks like "Shallow" took a hard hit in the last few weeks at the format.

Yes exactly. It did well until Xmas but then it just dropped. Not counting on rebound so the success must be proven elsewhere.

Chris Brown Ties Lil Wayne For Second-Most Top 10s on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay Chart
News
By Trevor Anderson | February 07, 2019 1:00 PM EST
Brown’s 'Undecided' bumps 12-10 and helps the singer share the silver medal.
Chris Brown’s “Undecided” pushes into the top 10 of the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart dated Feb. 9. The song gains 12-10 through a 9 percent boost to 16.5 million in audience in the week ending Feb. 3, per Nielsen Music.
The single samples Shanice’s “I Love Your Smile,” which spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1991.
The “Undecided” gain secures Brown’s 47th top 10 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. His career sum matches Lil Wayne’s count for the second-best total among all acts since the chart began in 1992. The pair trail only Drake, who owns 63 top 10s.
With Brown’s ascension, here’s a look at the leaderboard for most top 10s in the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart’s history:
63, Drake 47, Chris Brown 47, Lil Wayne 35, JAY-Z 32, R. Kelly 31, Nicki Minaj 30, Usher
Furthermore, “Undecided,” released Jan. 4, cracks the top 10 ceiling in only its fifth chart week, the fourth-fastest rise among his 47 top 10s. The 2006 single “Say Goodbye” and 2016 release “Party,” featuring Usher and Gucci Mane, likewise needed five frames to enter the region. Three tracks tie for his quickest trip to the top 10, with each completing the sprint in four weeks: “Gimme That,” featuring Lil Wayne in 2006, a featured turn on Rihanna’s “Birthday Cake” in 2012 and “Fine China” the following year.
As “Undecided” cracks the top 10 threshold on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, the track duplicates the feat on the plays-based Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop airplay ranking. The track climbs 12-9 on the latter thanks to a 9 percent rise in plays in the week ending Feb. 3.
“Undecided” is likely to appear on Brown’s forthcoming studio album, Indigo. The set follows 2017’s Heartbreak on A Full Moon, which became Brown’s seventh No. 1 set on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and held the top position for three weeks.

Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper's 'Shallow' Jumps Back Into Top 20 on Billboard Hot 100 News By Gary Trust | February 07, 2019 3:17 PM EST
Plus, Hot 100 chart moves for Blueface, The Chainsmokers & Kelsea Ballerini, Lauv & Troye Sivan. As previously reported, Ariana Grande rules the Billboard Hot 100 (dated Feb. 9) for a second week with "7 Rings." Plus, J. Cole earns his first top five hit on the tally, as "Middle Child" blasts from No. 26 to No. 4 following its first full week of tracking.
Meanwhile, other songs make notable moves on the latest Hot 100, including a ballad in the Grammy and Oscar spotlight and a debut hit by a rising rapper.
"Shallow," Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper Following the Jan. 22 announcement of its nomination for best original song, as well as Gaga's nod for best actress, at the Academy Awards (Feb. 24), the ballad from A Star Is Born gains by 50 percent to 39,000 sold in the week ending Jan. 31, according to Nielsen Music, marking its best sales week in three months.
The duet is also up for record and song of the year, among other categories, at the Grammy Awards (Feb. 10). "Thotiana," Blueface
The Los Angeles-based rapper(real name: Jonathan Porter) tallies his first top 40 Hot 100 hit, as his debut entry surges 66-28, led by its 95 percent vault to 22.4 million U.S. streams, as it enters Streaming Songs at No. 12.
Blueface drew buzz beginning last year thanks in part to his high-pitched voice, which fans have likened to cartoon character Courage the Cowardly Dog. A series of memes took off on YouTube, with clips of his music soundtracking the cartoon.
"This Feeling," The Chainsmokers feat. Kelsea Ballerini The track, up 56-52 on the Hot 100, after reaching No. 50, ascends 11-9 on the Pop Songs airplay chart, where it's The Chainsmokers' sixth top 10, following five in a row in 2016-17, and Ballerini's first. Ballerini is concurrently climbing Country Airplay with "Miss Me More" (21-20), her seventh entry on the list, where she has notched four No. 1s.
"I'm So Tired...," Lauv & Troye Sivan The pop singer-songwriters' collaboration bows at No. 86 on the Hot 100 with 6.7 million U.S. streams and 9,000 downloads sold, the latter sum enabling a No. 20 debut on Digital Song Sales.
