Maroon 5 Super Bowl Halftime Show Yields 434% Sales Gain in U.S.
2/4/2019 by Keith Caulfield
Also scoring big gains: Travis Scott's "Sicko Mode," OutKast's "The Way You Move" & SpongeBob anthem "Sweet Victory."
Maroon 5’s 2019 Super Bowl halftime show yielded big sales gains, according to initial reports to Nielsen Music.
In total, the songs performed during the halftime spectacular (including guest turns by Travis Scott and OutKast’s Big Boi) combined to sell 25,000 downloads on Sunday, Feb. 3, the day of the big game. That marked a 434 percent increase from their combined sales a day earlier: 5,000.
Maroon 5’s Six Songs Up 587 Percent: Focusing on just the six Maroon 5 songs the band played, the gains are even more pronounced. Combined sales of “Harder to Breathe,” “This Love,” “Girls Like You,” “She Will Be Loved,” “Sugar” and “Moves Like Jagger” rose by 587 percent (climbing from nearly 3,000 sold on Feb. 2 to 18,000 sold on Feb. 3).
Maroon 5’s Catalog Up 488 Percent: In total, Maroon 5’s entire catalog of songs -- not just the six tracks the act performed on the halftime show -- logged a 488 percent sales gain (up from 4,000 on Saturday to 24,000 on Sunday).
Scott and Big Boi Get a Boost: The sales gains were not isolated to Maroon 5 – as the group’s halftime guest stars, Travis Scott and OutKast’s Big Boi also saw large gains for the songs they performed.
Scott’s “Sicko Mode” jumped by 80 percent (rising from 2,000 to a little more than 3,000 downloads) and OutKast’s “The Way You Move” (performed by Big Boi) gained by a whopping 3,408 percent (vaulting from a negligible figure on Saturday to nearly 3,000 on Sunday).
Even a snippet of a track can push a sizable increase. As Big Boi was rolling to the halftime stage in a Cadillac convertible, a 15-second snippet of the 2005 track “Kryptonite” was heard, as performed by his own Purple Ribbon All-Stars ensemble. The song went from a negligible sales figure on Saturday to nearly 1,000 downloads (up 2,091 percent).
A ‘Victory’ for SpongeBob: And… even an animated interlude can pump a big increase. Scott’s performance was introduced by a on-screen snippet of the “Band Geeks” episode of the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants. In the short clip, about eight seconds of fanfare from the song “Sweet Victory” was heard, performed by David Eisley and Bob Kulick. The track bolted 524 percent – up from a negligible figure on Saturday to almost 1,000 downloads. (The inclusion of “Sweet Victory” was likely sparked by a Change.org petition that called for the Super Bowl to honor SpongeBob’s creator, Stephen Hillenburg, who died last November.)
Streaming information about the tracks in the halftime show spotlight will likely be available early this week.

I know there's pressure to get the chart out by today, but it feels better to have a meaty OP...Oh well, guess I'll do my best with post #3/whatever-it-is-by-the-time-I'm-done-writing-it
The #1 Race Has a Runner at the Finish Line It's looking like there's nothing that can prospectively take 7 Rings out. While it is declining on sales and streams in the aftermath of its hype launch 2 weeks ago, its totals are still formidible and radio is picking up the song fast, giving it an ample lead. Any possible competitors it could have are both #1 alums, with Without Me strong on radio and streams (though the sales stronghold begins to crumble as the remix hype dies down), and Sunflower strong on sales and streams (though as the movie's accolades season passes, so too does its momentum).
Sportsball Sparrers With the halftime show using two current top 10s, it aims to be possibly the most visible impact the Super Bowl will have on the Hot 100 since 2017. Girls Like You and Sicko Mode naturally stand to be the biggest gainers, both receiving special attention in the show (the former with a full drumline and gospel choir, and the latter with a clip intro acting in tribute to the passing of Spongebob creator Stephen Hillenburg), and could gain to somewhere around #5 (off of sales gains and notable stream boosts) and #3 (off of less potent gains but a better position last week) respectively.
My Little Billie: Friendship is Burial With last week receiving the full brunt of a J. Cole drop, it's looking like this week's big new story is going to be Billie Eilish finally becoming a hit artist, as her song "Bury a Friend" will have its first full week of tracking. We could be looking at ~20-25k sales and 25-40m streams, which could make her first hit also her first top 10!
Other songs to watch out for: A Lot / 21 Savage (Current events, new MV), Thotiana / Blueface (Rapid gains on streaming), Look Back at It / A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie (New MV), One Call / Gunna (New song starting strong on Apple Music though lagging on Spotify)

Would be even better to have ACTUAL data and info relevant to the chart rather than individual comments and random questions but it is what it is

Just didn't feel like hitting the quote button.

bury a friend seems stable enough but I wish Billie released it on a friday. That probably would've made top 10 a lock.

Even if Bury A Friend somehow doesn’t get into the top 10 next week, it’ll likely be there the week after. It looks like it’ll be a huge hit and I’m happy about that

Is Rihanna releasing a single this month? *SIGH*. I've come to understand that you're a huge Rihanna fan. What I'll say to you is relax. You're getting single(s) and possibly album(s), along with a tour and tons of videos from her this year. You've waited this long, what's another couple weeks?

Let's just hope her run lasts longer than Lorde and the emo teenagers that make up a ton of her fanbase don't drop her when she gets older and maybe grows out of making music that suits that mood.

I became a Drake fan in '08. He had two mixtapes out by then, he dropped another in '09, his debut album in 2010 and his sophomore album in 2011. He's never taken more than one year off since then so I've really been spoiled as far as music from him. I wouldn't know what to do if he suddenly took a huge break, but I think I'd find some way to adjust. Rihanna had a crazy run where she released an album every year from 2005-2012. A break was well deserved from her. She also dropped ANTI in 2016, so she's been fairly consistent if you ask me. I'm excited for new music from her, too. I think everyone kinda is, lol.

Rihanna would still be doing yearly album releases if that acting/fashion/perfume business didn’t take off.

So GLY will rise to #? I'm guessing top 5 I'm guessing #9... SICKO MODE and Happier also have boosts this week and the gap between TUN/High Hopes (#6 and #7 this week) and GLY is big (~7.5k points). EDIT: Oops... I forgot about Middle Child... so maybe #8.
