A Boogie Wit da Hoodie's 'Hoodie SZN' Returns to No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart

In a sleepy week on the Billboard 200 albums chart, rapper A Boogie Wit da Hoodie’s former No. 1, Hoodie SZN, reclaims the crown for a third nonconsecutive week. The set rises 3-1, and earned 47,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Feb. 7, according to Nielsen Music (down 1 percent).

The album previously led the list on charts dated Jan. 19 and Jan. 26.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Feb. 16-dated chart (where Hoodie SZN returns to No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Feb. 12.

Hoodie SZN’s chart fortunes are powered almost entirely by streaming activity. In the tracking week, of its total of 47,000 units, 45,000 were in SEA units, which equals 68.4 million on-demand audio streams for the album’s songs. The remaining overall units were from TEA units (about 1,000) and album sales (less than 1,000). The album once again trumps its own record for the smallest weekly album sales total for a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 since the chart flipped from an album sales-only list to a multi-metric consumption ranking in December of 2014.

21 Savage’s I Am > I Was vaults 8-2 with 40,000 units (up 14 percent), likely owed, in part, to increased interest in the album generated by news of his arrest on Feb. 3 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The former chart-topper spent two weeks atop the list in January.

Future’s Future Hndrxx Presents: The WIZRD slips 2-3 in its third week on the tally, earning just under 40,000 units (down 28 percent).

Travis Scott’s Astroworld climbs 9-4 with 38,000 units (up 11 percent)

and Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born soundtrack dips 4-5 with nearly 38,000 units (down 7 percent).

Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys is steady at No. 6 with 36,000 units (up less than 1 percent),

Meek Mill’s Championships is also a non-mover at No. 7 with 35,000 units (down 3 percent);

Drake’s Scorpion returns to the top 10, rising 11-8 with 34,000 units (up 3 percent);

and the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack steps 10-9 with 31,000 units (down 9 percent).

Closing out the top 10 is Kodak Black’s Dying to Live, jumping back into the top tier with a 13-10 move, earning 26,000 units (down 5 percent).

Hip-hop is 9/10ths of the top ten this week. Ariana's streaming numbers this week suggest fans of other genres may finally be moving to streaming, which will hopefully add a little balance to the chart. I'm not knocking rap, I just find it dull when one genre so completely dominates like this (like the turbo-pop boom at the beginning of the decade).

Boogie's the only one with multiple in the T10, with all 3 of his weeks. When BB200 was a sales chart no album had multiple sub-60k #1 weeks.

That said, the fact that Hoodie Szn has 3 ofbthe lowest numbers for a #1 in the Billboard shows that streaming has grown enough for albums to be #1 based mostly on it. Coincidentally, if I'm not mistaken, those 3 weeks were also the lowest pure selling weeks for a #1 in Top Album Sales that I mentioned above.

Rewinding the Charts: In 1977, 'A Star Is Born' – With Barbra Streisand & Kris Kristofferson – Topped the Billboard 200

The movie sparked a chart-topping album and song, plus and an Academy Award win.

Long before Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga brought their remake of A Star Is Born to the silver screen — and the Billboard charts — Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand did the same, telling the story of a burgeoning singer who falls in love with a seasoned rock star.

The soundtrack to Streisand and Kristofferson's reworking of the original 1937 movie and its 1954 remake, starring Judy Garland and James Mason, was released in November 1976. The set reached No. 1 on the Feb. 12, 1977-dated Billboard 200, where it ruled for six weeks.

But it was standout single "Evergreen," which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks, that marked a turning point in Streisand's career. Co-written with Paul Williams, it was only her second composing credit. "I was very impressed [at the time] with people like Joni Mitchell, who could write and sing their own songs, so I started to take guitar lessons," Streisand told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018. "I played ["Evergreen"] over and over, driving my family crazy."

The tune went on to win best original song at the Academy Awards and the Golden Globe Awards, while she and Kristofferson won Golden Globes for best actor and actress in a motion picture musical or comedy, respectively.


They're both going strong; Kristofferson released The Cedar Creek Sessions in 2016, and Streisand's Walls hit No. 12 on the Billboard 200 last November. Cooper and Gaga's Star, meanwhile, is up for multiple accolades at the 91st annual Oscars on Feb. 24, including best picture and original song, for their top five Hot 100 hit, "Shallow."

I thought for sure they were trying to get GH into Top 10 during the past three weeks - so I have no idea why they would suddenly swap with the ST, which already has peaked. (I thought this week was a given considering it was #10 on HDD with a nice cushion over #11).

There should be an industry standard on how to assign identical tracks to various albums - like once a year they can reassign. I get it's an issue, particularly for legacy acts - Eagles, Queen, Madonna, Aretha, etc. where the same version (not a single edit) appears on parent album/multiple compilations. This really won't be an issue for most post-2000 artists since compilations are largely irrelevant having been replaced with "Artist Playlists."

It's recurrent power is incredible. Still does 500k~ units each year.

So many artists struggling to do 500k with fully-promoted, new studio albums that have current singles.

Epic Records Scores Historic Week on Billboard 200, With Three of Top Four Albums

Epic Records celebrates a historic week on the Billboard 200 chart, as the label has three of the top four albums on the tally.

It’s the first time the label has achieved the feat stretching back to when the Billboard 200 combined its previously separate mono and stereo rankings into one overall chart in 1963. (Epic Records’ launch pre-dates the combining of those tallies in 1963.)

Epic holds the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 albums on the Billboard 200 dated Feb. 16, with 21 Savage’s I Am > I Was jumping 8-2 (released through Slaughter Gang/Epic), Future’s Future Hndrxx Presents: The WIZRD falling 2-3 (Freebandz/Epic) and Travis Scott’s ASTROWORLD climbing 9-4 (Cactus Jack/Grand Hustle/Epic).

Before this week, the last label to hold three out of the top four titles was Republic Records, back on the Sept. 1, 2018-dated tally. That week, Ariana Grande’s Sweetener (Republic) debuted at No. 1, while Nicki Minaj’s Queen shifted 2-3 (Young Money/Cash Money/Republic) and Drake’s Scorpion dipped 3-4 (Young Money/Cash Money/Republic).
