tool don't make pop though so they won't win 70% of this decade's AOTY winners weren't pop. Tool won't win, but not being pop is hardly the reason why.

Tool won't win, but not being pop is hardly the reason why. i don't think they deserve to win but anyway 24k magic, 1989, 21, 25 are definitely pop albums, golden hour is country pop, the suburbs is indie rock/chamber pop, babel is folk pop, morning phase is singer/songwriter, ram is disco so that would be the biggest outlier. i wasn't trying to say they were all fully pop diva albums but they are all very influenced by pop and had a lot of pop crossover appeal. tool would be a HUGE outlier if they won.

So basically everything except pure rock is pop? lol. I see where you're trying to go, but no. Crossing over doesn't suddenly make an album pop, it just makes one appealing to more people. Tool won't win AOTY because not enough people outside of their fanbase for them like that. A nomination is not too farfetched, though.

I didn’t say that lmao, but there’s no rap albums, r&b albums, pure country albums or rock albums that have won

Omg I was reading some old Billboard issues and only just now realized the HITS asshat is the same dude who wrote for Billboard chart stuff in the 90s.

24k Magic was an R&B album
Tool won't get nominated. A metal album has never been nominated. It's the one genre that has never shown up.

This HDD list is depressing. None of these albums are worthy of AOTY. Incredibly weak and boring year. They really need to go with ''wild card'' and nobody is better than Lana Del Rey this year.

omg WHAT. I did not know that but everything's coming together for me now Oh you’re talking about Paul Grein! I thought you meant, like, the main HITS guy haha but now that I see which thread this is it should have been clear to me who you meant. Anyway, Paul Grein also used to have a charts column in Yahoo! that was dry as hell but so informative

I totally forgot about Vampire Weekend! Yeah, I definitely think AOTY will go to some ''indie'' band. Big mainstream releases are just too weak this year.

hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=317961&title=GRAMMY-CHEW%3A-WHO-COULD-BE-THIS-YEAR%E2%80%99S-BRANDI-CARLILE%3FThursday, September 19, 2019 GRAMMY CHEW: WHO COULD BE THIS YEAR’S BRANDI CARLILE?by Lenny Beer and Simon Glickman A question we’re frequently hearing from all corners of the biz: Who will be the Brandi Carlile of this year’s Grammys, assuming there is one? We’re talking about a wild card—an unexpected (but deserving) recipient of multiple noms whose career gets supercharged by all that love and hardware. (The potential for a showstopping performance on the telecast doesn’t hurt either.) We’ve come up with a few possible left-field candidates—some of them newcomers and some more established—who might earn a place among the top-tier nominees. We welcome your suggestions as well. Maggie Rogers: The Capitol singer/songwriter, who won Pharrell Williams’ imprimatur while attending a masterclass at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute, earned strong reviews and buzz for her ambitious full-length Heard It in a Past Life, and her song “Light On” continues to resonate. If enough Grammy voters tune into her wavelength, she could be dangerous in all four top categories. Rosalía: Swooping in from Spain with a totally fresh fusion of pop, dance and Flamenco, this blazing newcomer (on Columbia) looks like a top contender for BNA; her album El Mal Querer, meanwhile, is ambitious and absorbing. Could one of its tracks (or one of her more recent, pop-skewing singles like her duets with J Balvin and Ozuna) make the ROTY/SOTY cut as well? Gary Clark, Jr.: A hot guitarist and versatile singer/songwriter with a flair for multiple styles—and an Academy favorite—the Warner Records artist scored a Traditional R&B Performance Grammy in 2014, the same year he got a Rock Song nom. His album This Land is a career milestone, and its title track has a political punch that’s not so very far from Childish Gambino’s ROTY/SOTY winner, “This Is America.” Tyler Childers: Exploring country and other roots genres from well outside the country mainstream—and produced by kindred spirit Sturgill Simpson, another “Americana” champ beloved by Grammy—RCA’s Kentucky troubadour paints evocative, soulful pictures on sophomore set Country Squire. Could he be a dark horse for BNA, Album and maybe more?

www.billboard.com/articles/news/8530274/beyonce-billie-eilish-jonas-brothers-2020-grammy-preview?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_source=t.co&utm_medium=referralWhat's at Stake for Beyoncé, Billie Eilish & More at 2020 Grammys9/19/2019 by Paul Grein Many people stand to gain or lose ground when the 62nd annual Grammy Awards are broadcast on Jan. 26. But the stakes are particularly high for these four players -- a teen phenom, an icon who is already one of the most decorated artists in Grammy history, a trio of brothers that came back bigger than ever this year, and the producer who has steered the Grammy telecast since 1980. Billie EilishWho: Alt-pop wunderkind who scored No. 1s on both the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 this year. Hurdle: The Grammys don’t usually take teen artists seriously, and her experimental-leaning tunes -- co-written with brother Finneas O’Connell -- may be too cutting-edge for older voters to get. Upshot: As a rare breakout with both critical acclaim and commercial success, she’s likely to be rewarded. And if she wins album of the year, she’ll be the youngest artist to ever do so. BeyoncéWho: One of the most decorated artists in Grammy history, with 23 wins and 66 nominations. Hurdle: While Homecoming: The Live Album, which captured her triumphant 2018 Coachella sets, received rapturous acclaim, no live album has been nominated for album of the year in 25 years. Upshot: Only one of Bey’s wins has been in a Big Four category -- and after her 2017 losses inspired the #GrammysSoWhite hashtag, voters may be eager to restore their cred. Jonas BrothersWho: The reunited trio of brothers scored their first No. 1 single on the Hot 100 this year with “Sucker.” Hurdle: Grammy voters tend to undervalue highly commercial pop music. Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” and Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” were both passed over for record and song of the year noms. Upshot: With new album Happiness Begins, the JoBros display an artistic growth even The Recording Academy would have a hard time ignoring. Ken EhrlichWho: The TV veteran has produced or executive-produced the Grammys since 1980. Hurdle: Last year Ariana Grande said he “stifled” her creativity and was the reason she did not attend or perform at the show. Upshot: It’s Ehrlich’s last Grammys before Ben Winston, The Late Late Show With James Corden executive producer, takes over for the 2021 ceremony, so he’ll want to end on a high note -- perhaps by making it up to Grande with a splashy performance from her.

I didn't see this answered in the thread yet, but is Lizzo eligible for BNA? It's another one of those gray situations where's she's been out and known in music circles for years, but didn't truly break out until the past year or two. I never know how that category works.

The Taylor Swift submissions are tragic. ME! on ROTY? They should have gone all in with the title track.
