^Glad for the correction, if only bc I was tired of those nutty Ariana fans on GD screeching like banshees that she had completely ruined her chances of being nominated for anything. Billboard just put up an article showing the genre performance categories in which every top 10 hit this year has been submitted. www.billboard.com/articles/news/awards/8531447/top-10-hits-2019-competing-grammy-nomination-process{the categories}Ariana Grande: 7 Rings is entered in best pop solo performance. Boyfriend is entered for best pop duo/group performance.
Bad Bunny: "MIA" (a collab with Drake) is entered for best pop duo/group performance.
Blueface: "Thotiana" is entered for best rap performance.
Chris Brown: "No Guidance" (featuring Drake) is entered for best R&B performance.
BTS: "Boy with Luv" (featuring Halsey) is entered for best pop duo/group performance.
Lewis Capaldi: "Someone You Loved" is entered for best pop solo performance.
Cardi B: "Please Me" (a collab with Bruno Mars) is entered for best rap/sung performance.
J. Cole: "Middle Child" is entered for best rap performance.
Da Baby: "Suge" is entered for best rap performance.
Drake: "Money in the Grave" (featuring Rick Ross) was not entered. Drake's compilation album, Care Package, was also not entered. But Drake is entered for hit collabs with Bad Bunny, Chris Brown and Meek Mill.
Billie Eilish: "Bad Guy" is entered for best pop solo performance.
Halsey: "Without Me" is entered for best pop solo performance.
Jonas Brothers: "Sucker" is entered for best pop duo/group performance.
Khalid: "Better" is entered for best pop solo performance. "Talk" is entered for best R&B performance.
Kodak Black: "ZEZE" (featuring Travis Scott & Offset) is entered for best rap performance.
Lil Baby: "Drip Too Hard" (a collab with Gunna) is entered for best rap/sung performance.
Lil Nas X: "Old Town Road" (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus) is entered for best pop duo/group performance. "Panini" is entered for best rap/sung performance.
Lil Tecca: "Ran$om" is entered for best rap/sung performance.
Lil Wayne: "Uproar" (featuring Swizz Beatz) is entered for best rap performance. (He won in the category three years ago with "No Problem.") "Let It Fly" (featuring Travis Scott) was not entered. Note: Swizz Beatz didn't have a featured credit on "Uproar" when it appeared on the Billboard Hot 100. This is how the Grammys show the credit.
Lizzo: "Truth Hurts" is entered for best pop solo performance. The track was first released in September 2017, but because it wasn't entered previously, the Grammys decided to make it eligible.
Logic: "Homicide" (featuring Eminem) is entered for best rap performance.
Marshmello: "Happier" (a collab with Bastille) was entered last year, but a "Stripped" version is entered this year for best pop duo/group performance.
Ava Max: "Sweet but Psycho" wasn't entered. The single was released in August 2018, in the previous eligibility year, though as Lizzo's example shows, that's not always a deal-breaker.
Panic! at the Disco: "High Hopes" was entered last year, but a "live" version is entered this year for best pop duo/group performance. (It's interesting that Panic!'s team thought they'd have a better chance of landing a nom with a live version of "High Hopes" than with the hit studio version of the group's follow-up hit, "Hey Look Ma, I Made It.")
Post Malone: "Sunflower (Spider Man: Into the Spider Verse)" (a collab with Swae Lee) is entered for best pop duo/group performance. "Wow." is entered for best rap/sung performance. "Goodbyes" (featuring Young Thug) and "Circles" were not entered. "Take What You Want" (featuring Ozzy Osbourne and Travis Scott) was released after the end of the eligibility year on Aug. 31. It will be eligible next year.
Meek Mill: "Going Bad" (featuring Drake) is entered for best rap performance.
Shawn Mendes. "If I Can't Have You" is entered for best pop solo performance. "Señorita" (a collab with Camila Cabello) is entered for best pop duo/group performance.
Sheck Wes: "Mo Bamba" wasn't entered. (Note: The single was released in June 2017.)
Ed Sheeran: "I Don't Care" (a collab with Justin Bieber) is entered for best pop duo/group performance.
Sam Smith: "Dancing With a Stranger" (a collab with Normani) is entered for best pop duo/group performance. Smith hasn't received a Grammy nom since he swept four awards five years ago. Will this silky smash put him back in the running?
Taylor Swift: "ME!" (featuring Brendon Urie) is entered for best pop duo/group performance. "You Need to Calm Down" is entered for best pop solo performance. "Lover" was not entered in a performance category, though it is entered for song of the year.

I'm kind of intrigued by the fact that BB and HDD are both stepping in with official submissions this year. Are the Grammys finally loosening up on trying to keep a lid on things (I never understood why they felt the need to be so secretive, anyway) or is this more of a controlled-chaos move?

The strategy she concocted was bold: She submitted "Lover" for Song of the Year and submitted "You Need to Calm Down" for Record of the Year. While she wasn't the first to do this—and certainly won't be the last—Taylor's overarching belief that she could walk away with wins in SOTY and ROTY with two separate tracks for the biggies speaks volumes about supreme self-confidence as well as her DIY acumen. Similarly, Swift's labelmate Ariana Grande submitted "7 rings" for SOTY and "thank u, next" for ROTY.By contrast, Beyoncé submitted the same track—"Spirit”—for both Record and Song, as did Lady Gaga with "Always Remember Us This Way," Khalid with "Talk" and Billie Eilish with "bad guy."hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=318103&title=SONG-OR-RECORD%3F-SWIFT%27S-STRATEGIC-SPLITHow in the world was submitting Lover and YNTCD for SOTY and ROTY a bold strategy? It was literally the most logical choice for her. The actual bold choice was entering 7 Rings for SOTY and TUN for ROTY. Wtf is up with Ariana's team? They made the same stupid mistake last year with NTLTC and GIAM. Just because it worked once for Beyonce in 2010 doesn't mean its the right way to go. This! They should’ve put all their eggs in the basket with “thank you, next”.

Where Every Top 10 Hit of 2019 Is Competing in the Grammy Nomination Process 9/26/2019 by Paul Grein
A lot rides on these decisions. Pick the right entry and you can wind up with Grammy gold. Choose wrong and you can miss out. Ariana Grande's team had a problem everyone would love to have: deciding which of their artist's many hits to enter in the nominations process for the 62nd annual Grammy Awards. (You can enter them all, if you like, but there's no point in competing against yourself.) They chose "7 Rings," which is entered for best pop solo performance, and "Boyfriend" (a collab with Social House), which is entered for best pop duo/group performance.
They chose not to enter "Thank U, Next" and "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored," which would have competed with "7 Rings" in the pop solo category. Yet another Grande hit from this year, "Breathin," wasn't eligible because Sweetener, the album on which it was featured, won a Grammy last year for best pop vocal album.
A lot rides on these decisions. Pick the right entry and you can wind up with Grammy gold. Choose wrong and you can miss out. Grande's team had an especially tough job choosing between two long-running No. 1 hits on the Hot 100: "7 Rings," which brought Rodgers & Hammerstein into the streaming era, and the shimmering and highly personal "Thank U, Next."
What about other artists? Here's an alphabetical list of every other artist who had a top 10 hit in 2019, and which performance categories they are slotted in. Keep in mind that an entry is not a nomination. But if these records are nominated on Nov. 20 -- and many of them will be -- these are the performance categories in which they'll be nominated. (Most are also entered for record and song of the year. I specify which ones are.)
Bad Bunny: "MIA" (a collab with Drake) is entered for best pop duo/group performance.
Blueface: "Thotiana" is entered for best rap performance. Also entered for record and song.
Chris Brown: "No Guidance" (featuring Drake) is entered for best R&B performance. Also entered for record and song.
BTS: "Boy with Luv" (featuring Halsey) is entered for best pop duo/group performance. Also entered for record and song.
Lewis Capaldi: "Someone You Loved" is entered for best pop solo performance. Also entered for record and song.
Cardi B: "Please Me" (a collab with Bruno Mars) is entered for best rap/sung performance. Also entered for record and song.
J. Cole: "Middle Child" is entered for best rap performance. Also entered for record and song.
Da Baby: "Suge" is entered for best rap performance. Also entered for record and song.
Also entered for record and song.
Halsey: "Without Me" is entered for best pop solo performance. Also entered for record and song.
Jonas Brothers: "Sucker" is entered for best pop duo/group performance. Also entered for record and song.
Khalid: "Better" is entered for best pop solo performance. "Talk" is entered for best R&B performance. Khalid's team placed its bet on "Talk," entering it, and not "Better," for record and song.
Kodak Black: "ZEZE" (featuring Travis Scott & Offset) is entered for best rap performance. Also entered for record and song.
Lil Baby: "Drip Too Hard" (a collab with Gunna) is entered for best rap/sung performance. Also entered for record and song.
Lil Nas X: "Old Town Road" (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus) is entered for best pop duo/group performance. "Panini" is entered for best rap/sung performance. Lil Nas X's team bet on "Old Town Road," entering it, and not "Panini," for record and song.
Lil Tecca: "Ran$om" is entered for best rap/sung performance. Also entered for record and song.
Lil Wayne: "Uproar" (featuring Swizz Beatz) is entered for best rap performance. (He won in the category three years ago with "No Problem.") Also entered for record and song. "Let It Fly" (featuring Travis Scott) was not entered. Note: Swizz Beatz didn't have a featured credit on "Uproar" when it appeared on the Billboard Hot 100. This is how the Grammys show the credit.

"Goodbyes" (featuring Young Thug) and "Circles" were not entered. Post's team bet on "Sunflower," entering it, and not these other hits, for record and song."Take What You Want" (featuring Ozzy Osbourne and Travis Scott) was released after the end of the eligibility year on Aug. 31. It will be eligible next year.
Meek Mill: "Going Bad" (featuring Drake) is entered for best rap performance. Also entered for record and song.
Shawn Mendes. "If I Can't Have You" is entered for best pop solo performance. "Señorita" (a collab with Camila Cabello) is entered for best pop duo/group performance. Mendes' team bet on "Señorita" entering it, and not "If I Can't Have You," for record and song.

Also entered for record, but it wasn't eligible for song.
Ed Sheeran: "I Don't Care" (a collab with Justin Bieber) is entered for best pop duo/group performance. But it's not entered for record or song. Sheeran's team bet instead on "Beautiful People" (featuring Khalid), which is entered in both of those categories.
Sam Smith: "Dancing With a Stranger" (a collab with Normani) is entered for best pop duo/group performance. Smith hasn't received a Grammy nom since he swept four awards five years ago. Will this silky smash put him back in the running? Also entered for record and song.
Taylor Swift: "ME!" (featuring Brendon Urie) is entered for best pop duo/group performance. "You Need to Calm Down" is entered for best pop solo performance. Sheck Wes: "Mo Bamba" wasn't entered. (Note: The single was released in June 2017.)
Note: I didn't list most singles that were released in the previous eligibility year, even if they made the top 10 in 2019.

I hope “No Guidance” gets ROTY. I highly doubt it - esp. when there are much bigger hits that are likely to be nominated over it.

It looks like Billboard hired Paul Grein back after his run with Hits Daily Double, and I'm sure they expected more detailed posts as part of that move. Hits, in turn, probably wants to make sure it's keeping up with that stuff. Especially since they've, in general, seemed more cognizant of traffic in recent months.

Didn't Bruno get ROTY and SOTY with different songs during the same ceremony? Hardly a bold move at this point. They also act like Khalid, Gaga, Billie and Beyoncé are bold by entering the same song when they had really no choice:
Khalid's "Talk" was easily bigger than any other track he's done this year (or his career for that matter). What else could he have submitted?
Gaga is not eligible with "Shallow", so she went all in with the second biggest hit of the album (not sure it will work; her best shot is an AOTY nod imo).
Billie again had no hit of the same size to compete with "bad guy". Her second biggest hit is "bury a friend", which feels way more experimental and less likely to garner any nods.
As for Beyoncé, "Spirit" is her only original single this year. I think her best shot is that it somehow gets some traction with film awards and the increased profile makes the Recording Academy nominate it. But as it stands it was such a non-event that it could even miss the Oscar category if some higher profile recordings come out before the year ends. It's a lock for a Golden Globe nod tho.

When you're so out of touch and have lost all credibility, it makes sense that you would go to work for Billboard!

Beyoncé, Brandi Carlile & All the Women Vying for Producer of the Year Grammy Nominations Last year, Linda Perry became the first woman in 15 years to receive a Grammy nomination for producer of the year, non-classical. Could a woman be nominated in that high-profile category two years running? Several women have a shot, starting with Beyoncé, who is already the most nominated woman in Grammy history (66 noms). Queen Bey is on the entry list for co-producing Homecoming: The Live Album and The Lion King: The Gift. Beyoncé is vying to become the first female artist/producer to receive a nom in this category since 1998, when both Sheryl Crow and Lauryn Hill were nominated. (Beyoncé is listed as Beyoncé Knowles-Carter on the entry list in this category.) Homecoming: The Live Album is a top contender for a best urban contemporary album nom. The Lion King: The Gift is vying for a best pop vocal album nom. Brandi Carlile, a three-time Grammy-winner, is entered for co-producing Tanya Tucker's While I'm Livin'. The album, Tucker's first collection of new music in 17 years, is vying for a best country album nom. Carlile co-produced Tucker's album with Shooter Jennings, who is entered separately for producer of the year, non-classical. Perry is vying to become the first woman to receive multiple noms in the history of the category. Her work this year included Dolly Parton's Dumplin' soundtrack, which is vying for a nom in the category of best compilation soundtrack for visual media. Perry also co-produced Natasha Bedingfield's first album in nine years, Roll With Me, and singles by Beatie Wolfe, Willa Amie and Lion. Perry has yet to win a Grammy. St. Vincent, a two-time Grammy winner, is entered for producing Sleater-Kinney's The Center Won't Hold. It's a contender for a nom for best alternative music album -- a category St. Vincent won as an artist five years ago. Rhiannon Giddens is entered alongside Dirk Powell. They co-produced Our Native Daughters' Songs of Our Native Daughters, which is vying for a nom for best folk album. The quartet consists of Giddens, Leyla McCalla, Allison Russell and Amythyst Kiah. Giddens won a 2010 Grammy for best traditional folk album. Erica Brenner, a Grammy winner last year for producing Karim Sulayman's Songs Of Orpheus - Monteverdi, Caccini, D'India & Landi (which won as best classical solo vocal album), is entered for both producer of the year, non-classical and producer of the year, classical. (Neat trick.) She is entered on the non-classical side for producing Apollo's Fire's Christmas on Sugarloaf Mountain, which is entered for best folk album, and CancerBlows: The Legends Return. Patti Cathcart Andress, the female half of the jazz duo Tuck and Patti, is entered alongside her husband and musical partner Tuck Andress, for producing Denise Young's Soprano, which is entered for best traditional pop vocal album. I.M. Rock N. Rollen, the sister-and-brother production team Tracey Milionis and William Kelly Milionis, is entered for their work on Dallas Hodge's Don't Forget about the Music We Made. They're vying for a nom for best contemporary blues album. Rock Mafia, which consists of Tim James and Antonia Armato, is entered for producing singles and tracks by such artists as Darnell Williams. Other female producers who are entered are Kenya Autie, Johnette Downing, Adrianne Duncan, Dawn Elder, Loretta Pieper Fradkin, Cynthia Haring & Katia Valdeos, Cindy Paulos, Marion Schwebel, Sh!tty Princess, Jeanette Sorrell and Julie Wolf. If a woman is nominated this year for producer of the year, non-classical, it will be the first time that female producers have been nominated two years running since 1997-98. Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman of Prince and the Revolution were the first women to be nominated in this category (1984). Janet Jackson was nominated in 1989 in collaboration with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Mariah Carey was nominated in 1991 in collaboration with Walter Afanasieff. Paula Cole (1997) was the first woman to be nominated on her own in this category. Crow and Hill were both nominated on their own the following year, marking the only time in Grammy history that two women have been nominated, separately, in this category in the same year. Lauren Christy was nominated in 2003 as part of The Matrix. A total of 239 producers (or production teams) are vying for producer of the year, non-classical. That's down from 260 who were entered in this category last year. www.billboard.com/articles/news/awards/8531744/beyonce-brandi-carlile-women-producer-of-the-year-grammys-2020

Reading this, I had totally forgotten Pink released a new album this past year. If I've learned anything over the years, it's don't count Pink or Kelly out of grabbing a Pop Album nomination if they've released an album.

Re: the above BB write-up, Prince and the Revolution were nominated in 1985, not 1984. That said it somewhat surprisingly never occurred to me until now to think of Lisa and Wendy as the first women to be nominated for the award (I always think of Janet as the first). Not to take away from their work but that nomination is so obviously driven by Prince himself, it's easy to forget The Revolution was its own separate entity and not just a backup band or temporary appendage to Prince's stage name.
Billboard writing an entire article about it makes me wonder if there is some buzz behind the scenes for a woman being nominated this year. None of the ones they named seem like particularly strong candidates, but then this is not a category that I usually think about before the nominations are released.

I wasn't being pissy, just factual. I hadn't looked into the matter until this discussion, so I didn't know either. Wikipedia can be a decent guide, but anyone can edit those pages so they obviously can be incorrect.

I wasn't being pissy, just factual. I hadn't looked into the matter until this discussion, so I didn't know either. Wikipedia can be a decent guide, but anyone can edit those pages so they obviously can be incorrect. Saying 'it took all of 45 seconds' comes across as pissy even if you didn't mean it to. Janet was the first woman nominated by her name, so I can see how Wendy and Lisa have been overlooked. It's an extremely easy oversight to make and Paul Grein just did a little more research than most (shocking, I know!). The Wikipedia page for Janet's awards and nominations page even cites a 2014 article from the Grammys itself name-checking Janet as the first female nominee (direct link to that article - www.grammy.com/grammys/news/producer-year-category-turns-40) and up until now, any write-up I've ever seen on the topic names Janet as the first. I honestly think people just forget a lot of times that Prince was technically not a solo artist when he was working with The Revolution (or with NPG years later), or they look at it like a vanity name/credit.
