I honestly thought Gaga would never be as big as she was since the release of "Applause" and her struggles with Artpop.

"Shallow" reaches a new peak on all three components on it's 22nd week. That's crazy (radio is actually not that terrible for it. I'm guessing the AC formats are making up for the CHR airplay it's missing).

Firstly, "Ray of Light" was a solo-released studio album and not a movie soundtrack album.

Secondly, when Madonna released the album she wasn't 'coming back' from anything. She had a 7 week number-one single on the Hot 100 only 3 years before with her "Bedtime Stories" album and two top tens on the Hot 100 only the year before with the "Evita" OST.

Better (not perfect) example is The Emancipation Of Mimi. That was a bigger deal though because that album had I think 3 huge hits and Shallow is just one. But I think it's similar in that after this the career boost from Shallow will be enough to get her at least once or twice onto some 2020's year end hot 100's

Yeah, I don't think it's the same either. If anything, this album strays from the trajectory of Madonna so forcing a comparison is just that. But at this point into Madonna's career, she was in a slump of her own after all the sex controversy and winning audiences back with safer softer songs. I think in 1993, she was hitting with songs like Rain, which would lead into I'll Remember, Secret and Take A Bow.

Eh, Mariah was coming off a much lower low than Gaga. Her comeback was a lot more impressive, and not just because it produced multiple hits.

I still don't get how Shallow got to No1 with such weak stats.Speaking of Ariana,it seems weird NTLTC couldn't even debut No2,with God's plan being way after its peak.Maybe it has to do with Shallow being higher on the on demand streaming chart.7 rings was higher on both streaming and radio and by a considerable margin for 100,000 sales to be enough.Anyways, congrats to Gaga for her 4th leader!

NTLTC's first week was stronger than Shallow this week. Well, last month Happier and BUWYGIB were stronger than Shallow but 7 rings blocked both songs. That's one of the funniest things about music charts: sometimes you just need the perfect timing.
