For My Broken Heart (1991)
After 1990's Rumor Has It, with the wild success and popularity of all the singles, plus "Fancy" igniting even greater interest in Reba's live shows, Reba was at an all-time career high. Then on March 16, 1991, tragedy struck while they were out on tour in promotion of that album. One of two charter planes that was carrying her band and crew struck a mountainside shortly after taking off from San Diego early in the morning with poor visibility. Eight of her band and crew members, plus the pilot and copilot, were killed instantly with the impact. Reba and her husband Narvel were staying at a hotel for the night before going home themselves, and had to find out via phone call what had happened. Reba was very close to all of these people, as many of them had been by her side for years and years. I can only imagine her anguish in that time period However, despite the tragedy, her career went on, and she was expected to pull it together and keep herself going, so she got to work on a new album. The result was one of the most compellingly emotional releases of her career, For My Broken Heart. It is this album that we have the pleasure to rank next Tracklist: (36:51)
1. For My Broken Heart 2. Is There Life Out There 3. Bobby 4. He's In Dallas 5. All Dressed Up (With Nowhere To Go) 6. The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia 7. Buying Her Roses 8. The Greatest Man I Never Knew 9. I Wouldn't Go That Far 10. If I Had Only Known
We'll go ahead and set the deadline 4 weeks from now, on Sunday March 8th

Thought I throw these 3 Georgia song videos out here in the beginning. As most of us know like “Fancy” the song, “The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia” was a cover when Reba recorded it. It was originally recorded by Vicki Lawrence in 1973. So, below I listed Reba’s version, Vicki’s version, and a interview segment performance of both Reba and Vicki singing it together when Reba was a guest on Vicki’s TV talk show. This last one is interesting it gives background on how Vicki ended up recording it after her husband at the time wrote it and was rejected by some singers. This one also gives background info how Reba found the song. E N J O Y! I read somewhere (I don't know how much water this holds tho) that Reba actually was sick with a cold or something and was planning on joining those band members on that plane, and Narvel advised her not to so as to avoid getting the band or the pilot/copilot sick. Again I don't know how much truth that holds...but imagine if she was on that plane that day.
I saw an Oprah's Masterclass segment on YouTube a couple years ago (this was the first I'd seen it) of Reba discussing that horrible tragedy, and when she got choked up and said it'd happened 20+ years ago and still felt like it happened yesterday, I got choked up as well. Wish I didn't relate to her, and wish she'd never had to go through this.
Interesting fact: her guitar player that passed was a graduate of my high school. He was quite popular in school if I'm not mistaken.

Another tidbit worth mentioning: Faith Hill auditioned to be one of Reba’s backup singers in the late ‘80s when she was first trying to get started in the country music industry. She ended up getting rejected. The lady that they hired instead was on the plane when it went down...

The rejection wasn’t due to lack of talent. The voices didn’t work well together. So, yes if Faith had gotten Paula Kaye Evans spot there would have not been any Faith Hill music.

Again I don't know how much truth that holds...but imagine if she was on that plane that day. That's absolutely true. Reba was supposed to be on that flight, but Narvel suggested she stay back to get some more rest, and to not get everyone else sick.

Submitted! This album was brutal to rank. Three of my four favourite Reba singles are from this album, so it was really hard to put anything as low as I had to. Any one of my top 3 would have been my #1 had it been included on Rumor Has It (and that was a really strong album itself!). Really, anything in my top 6 could have been a #1 rank on most albums. This is such a fantastic record.

Interesting REBA development: Reba has returned to the home of her original and 2nd record labels (Mercury & MCA), Universal Music Group. I’m curious to know what her next album will sound like. /?vh=e

Such a great album! The singles are iconic, but there are also a lot of very strong album tracks. I expect the singles to dominate, but I'm excited to see how things play out.

Sent. And I'm genuinely surprised. I expected this album to be my favorite and it was the one I enjoyed the least. Am I losing my premium soccer mom card? Oop
I waited and waited for a big moment on this album and it didn't come. Some excellent vocal performances but the songs didn't quite captivate me. Rumor Has It remains unbothered.
Super random but the hook in "Is There Life Out There" reminded me of the chorus of "When You Say Nothing At All".

1) What will be #1? It’s another showdown between “Is There Life Out There” and “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia”
2) What will be #10? “Buying Her Roses”
3) Which songs will be in the top 5? “Is There Life Out There” and “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” vying for the top spot along with the albums two other singles “The Greatest Man I Never Knew” and title track...that leaves one spot for which SHOULD be “If I Had Only Known” but I’m not going to hold my breath...so I’ll guess “Bobby”
4) What song will be most polarizing? “If I Had Only Known” Least polarizing? “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia”
5) Which of the singles will place highest and where will it place? “Is There Life Out There” for the win!
6) Which of the singles will place lowest and where will it place? “The Greatest Man I Never Knew” at #3 followed by “For My Broken Heart” at #4
7) What will be the highest-placing album track and where will it place? “Bobby” at #5
8) Where will the title track, "For My Broken Heart", place? #4
8) Any other thoughts/predictions? Outside of the singles I really have no idea what to expect from this rankdown other than assuming y’all will end up tanking the one album track that should come out ahead.

8) Where will the title track, "For My Broken Heart", place? Top 3

3) Which songs will be in the top 5? "Is There Life Out There," "For My Broken Heart," "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia," "The Greatest Man I Never Knew," "I Wouldn’t Go That Far"
4) What song will be most polarizing? "If I Had Only Known" Least polarizing? "Is There Life Out There"
