Antonoff did it so my expectations are low, but a lot of sessioners who also hate their collaborations did say its more stripped down for him. So I am hoping it bucks the trends. The lyric snippet in Vogue is very good.

You can certainly hear Jack Antonoff in the production of “Lover.” I quite like it.

This is my favorite so far. It’s an odd choice for radio but it’s a well-written song and have to hand it to her, the bridge is the best part.

Strong album cut, not single material. I like the lyrics. Very old-school Taylor.

Definitely the best song so far. Easily one of her strongest ballads. I could see this being a huge fall/winter hit if it was sung by Ed Sheehan. I think that’s the goal here.

Half hour in and the song is still not working on Apple Music USA. Funny seeing the Swifties freak out on Twitter and threaten Apple. I heard it on Youtube but really Apple better not do this when the album drops or Steve Jobs may have a yard full of them out for his blood! lol!
Edit... they finally got it working, Swifties win again!

I hated her vocals on first listen but it's growing on me fast. So pure.

Beautiful. The second verse is weak af tho. Especially compared to the flawless opening.
What is with the echoed vocal production? On this, and The Archer, It suffocates her ability to emote the songwriting and makes her vulnerability sound robotic.

I kinda lost interest half way through, tbh, so, despite The Archer being more skeletal, it held my attention more somehow. This is really strong through. Single strong? Nah, but beautiful. At this point, I'mma have to treat Me! and Calm Down like bonus tracks, along with that song about having a friend or something.

Edit... they finally got it working, Swifties win again! Back in February Apple put up thank u, next so late that I downloaded Amazon Music and set up a free trial with my Prime account to give it my first spin. They always struggle with the bigger releases, could be about the amount of pre-saves and refreshes/traffic they get. They need to be better lol. I love "Lover" but I was waiting for her to say "husband" at the end or something lol. The music video will be either the proposal moment or wedding I can feel it |

I think this may be one of my favorite Taylor songs...ever. It's just so warm and sincere.
Kind of reminds me of "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton, a bit.

The chorus is great, but I do agree the echoed vocal production on the “my” parts takes a lot of emotion out of it. I’m not sold on the bridge. In love with Lover. I don’t think it’s right for radio, at least not until it can follow a smash hit. At that point it could certainly pull a Wildest Dreams. It’s my favorite I’ve heard from the album so far.

I like Lover. But I feel that the production takes away from it? Like the Speak Now production would have made the song magical I feel.

Lover is by far my favourite from this album so far.
I thought the vibe and production choices are great. But the lyrics didn't really grab me as much as I hoped.

Archer remains my favorite. I think something about the self sabotage fear just speaks to me, and it has the strongest lyrics we have heard. Lover is pretty but a bit generic with some awkward phrasing. It doesn’t flow well enough imo to be THAT perfect love song. I do like YNTCD though I wish the second verse were reworked. Me is just strange.

Lover is a fantastic song. It successfully gives me those warm ooey-gooey feelings inside which not many songs can do. This is good start to finish - great verses, chorus, and wow what a bridge! It also manages to feel kind of epic even though it clocks in at less than 4 minutes. I think this was the perfect song to release now to remind people of what a brilliant songwriter Taylor is, and the reaction to it seems to be mostly very positive. Many people have said they don't think it sounds like single material, but I could see this working. The first two singles sounded very much like radio-made singles but neither set the world on fire. She could have huge success with something that sounds a little more timeless and classic, and even if she doesn't it would be a nice change of pace for her. Also happy to see a different third single if it's as good as this song.
