Ariana Grande's 'Thank U, Next' May Bounce Back to No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart

Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next album may bounce back to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart next week, according to industry forecasters. However, there is at least one album that could spoil Grande’s chart-topping party: Hozier’s new Wasteland, Baby! is flirting with the possibility of opening at No. 1.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the March 16-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Thank U could return to No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, March 10.

Those in the know suggest Thank U may return to the top slot with 90,000 to 95,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending March 7. If Thank U jumps back to No. 1, it will tally its third nonconsecutive week atop the list. The album spent its first two weeks at No. 1 and then fell to No. 2 on the chart dated March 9 -- where Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born soundtrack surged back to the top in the wake of the Academy Awards. On next week’s chart, expect A Star Is Born to tally around 70,000 units (down from the 129,000 units it earned in the week ending Feb. 28, according to Nielsen Music).

Next week’s top 10 could host four debuts: Hozier’s Wasteland, Baby!, 2 Chainz’s Rap or Go to the League, Solange’s When I Get Home and Lil Skies’ Shelby.
Prognosticators expect that Wasteland could earn perhaps 85,000 to 90,000 equivalent album units for the week -- so it's not terribly far off from Thank U's forecast. A fair amount of that sum will be driven by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with Hozier’s upcoming U.S. tour. First-week units for Wasteland will also be enhanced by a newly released deluxe edition of the album. The new version of the set dropped Wednesday (March 6) via digital retailers and streaming services and includes two bonus tracks.

Meanwhile, 2 Chainz’s Rap or Go to the League may launch with around 60,000 to 65,000 units, so say forecasters. But we’ve seen late-in-the-week sales surges from hip-hop albums in the recent past, thanks to creative merchandise/album bundle offers, so 2 Chainz's first-week units could be larger than anticipated. (The rapper has a sizable range of merchandise/album bundles available.)

2 Chainz’s last studio set, Pretty Girls Like Trap Music, debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the chart dated July 8, 2017, bowing with 106,000 units earned in its first week, according to Nielsen Music.

Plus, Solange’s new album When I Get Home is on track for a top 10 debut, and could earn over 55,000 units in the frame ending March 7. Notably, When doesn’t have any merchandise/album bundles in play (as of March 6 at 5 p.m. PT), nor does it have a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer enhancing first-week sales.

Solange’s last album, A Seat at the Table, opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart dated Oct. 22, 2016, with 72,000 units earned in its first week, according to Nielsen Music.

The fourth and likely final new entry in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 next week could come from Lil Skies’ Shelby. The hip-hop artist’s album may begin with around 55,000 units. His last release, Life of a Dark Rose, peaked at No. 10 on the Jan. 27, 2018-dated list.

It’s the singer-songwriter’s first No. 1. Plus: 2 Chainz, Lil Skies and Solange debut in top 10.

Hozier scores his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as his sophomore full-length set Wasteland, Baby! bows atop the list. The LP, released via Rubyworks/Columbia on March 1, earned 89,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending March 7, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 75,000 were in album sales.

Wasteland is the first rock album to lead the Billboard 200 in more than three months, since Mumford & Sons’ Delta debuted at No. 1 on the Dec. 1, 2018-dated chart.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new March 16-dated chart -- where Wasteland launches at No. 1 -- will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on March 12.

Wasteland follows Hozier’s 2018 EP Nina Cried Power, which topped out at No. 60. Before that, the singer-songwriter’s self-titled debut full-length set bowed and peaked at No. 2 on the Oct. 25, 2014-dated list. The album was led by the smash single “Take Me to Church,” which climbed to No. 1 on the Hot Rock Songs tally the week after the album arrived on the charts. “Church” spent 23 weeks atop the list, and also hit No. 2 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.

The Hozier album has spent 174 weeks on the Billboard 200 (including its re-entry on the new March 16-dated list at No. 175) and has earned 2.6 million equivalent album units in the U.S., with 972,000 of that sum in album sales.

Wasteland’s debut week of 89,000 units is the largest for any rock album since Mumford & Sons’ Delta started with 230,000 units (chart dated Dec. 1, 2018). Wasteland also snares the largest sales week for a rock album since Delta, with 75,000 copies sold (Delta sold 214,000 in its debut frame).

Wasteland’s opening sum was aided by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with Hozier’s U.S. tour, which begins tonight (March 10).

Wasteland’s standard-edition track list includes two of the four songs on the Nina Cried Power EP, including the title tune, which spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Adult Alternative Songs airplay chart late last year. The set’s latest radio single, “Movement,” has so far peaked at No. 3 on the most recently published Adult Alternative Songs chart (dated March 9).

Wasteland is also the first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart for Columbia Records in nearly a year, since Jack White’s Boarding House Reach (Third Man/Columbia) premiered atop the list dated April 7, 2018.

At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200 is Ariana Grande’s former leader, Thank U, Next, which holds in the runner-up slot for a second week. It earned 86,000 equivalent album units (down 26 percent). Thank U spent its first two weeks at No. 1.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born soundtrack falls from No. 1 to No. 3 with 74,000 units (down 42 percent).

A pair of rappers collect top five entries, as 2 Chainz and Lil Skies see their latest albums enters at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.

2 Chainz notches his fifth top 10 album, as Rap or Go to the League debuts at No. 4 with 65,000 equivalent album units (with 13,000 of that sum comprising album sales). He previously visited the region with Pretty Girls Like Trap Music (No. 2, 2017), Collegrove (No. 4, 2016), B.O.A.T.S. II #METIME (No. 3, 2013) and Based on a T.R.U. Story (No. 1, 2012).

Lil Skies, meanwhile, scores his second top 10 effort, as Shelby bows at No. 5 with 54,000 units (with 6,000 of that figure in album sales). Lil Skies netted his first top 10 with Life of a Dark Rose, which peaked at No. 10 on the Jan. 17, 2018-dated chart.

Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody soundtrack descends 5-6 with 44,000 units (down 29 percent).

Solange’s When I Get Home is the fourth and final debut in the top 10, as it starts at No. 7 with 43,000 equivalent album units (with 11,000 of that figure in album sales), marking her third top 10 effort. Solange’s last album, A Seat at the Table, garnered the artist her second top 10, and first No. 1, when it entered atop the list dated Oct. 22, 2016.

Closing out the new top 10, Gunna’s Drip or Drown 2 falls 3-8 with 42,000 units (down 54 percent),

Offset’s Father of 4 falls 4-9 with 39,000 units (down 56 percent)

and A Boogie Wit da Hoodie’s Hoodie SZN slips 8-10 with 35,000 units (down 6 percent).

Reminds me of how Imagine Dragon's first album is approaching 7 million equivalents. 

I guess most of the biggest Rock/Alt albums released this decade still move their units slowly overtime, like in the past (i.e. AC/DC, Guns N Roses, Metallica having huge catalog albums).

2 Chainz's 'Rap Or Go to the League' Starts at No. 1 On Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart

2 Chainz earns his third No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart as Rap or Go to the League debuts in the top slot on the ranking dated March 16. The set, which notes LeBron James as an executive producer, earned 65,000 equivalent album units in the week ending March 7, according to Nielsen Music.

The Georgia native, born Tauheed Epps, previously reigned with 2012’s Based on a T.R.U. Story (three weeks at No. 1) and 2017’s Pretty Girls Like Trap Music (one).

Rap concurrently starts at No. 1 on the Top Rap Albums chart, becoming 2 Chainz’s fourth leader there. In addition to Story and Girls, he also ruled with B.O.A.T.S II #MeTime, a one-week champ in 2013.

As previously reported, Rap also opens at No. 4 on the all-genre Billboard 200.

With Rap’s arrival, four of the album’s songs debut on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, led by the No. 31 entrance of “Whip,” featuring Travis Scott. In addition, 2 Chainz banks new entries with “Rule The World,” featuring Ariana Grande (No. 39), “Momma I Hit A Lick,” featuring Kendrick Lamar (No. 40) and “High Top Versace,” featuring Young Thug (No. 45).

The four debuts push 2 Chainz to 58 career entries on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, dating to his first, “Boo,” which reached No. 76 in 2011. Among all artists, the 58-song collection ranks 11th for the most appearances on the list in the 2010s decade by any artist. 2 Chainz now passes the current hauls of The Weeknd (56) and Scott (57); Drake leads all acts, with 205 charted songs in the 2010s.

In other chart appearances for Rap songs, “World” is the set’s best-selling tune of the week, recording 5,000 downloads in the week ending March 7. The track opens at No. 12 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales and No. 11 on Rap Digital Song Sales.

Another Rap cut, “2 Dollar Bill,” featuring Lil Wayne & E-40, also generates some sales activity. The collaboration registers 3,000 downloads in the week, prompting a No. 18 start on Rap Digital Song Sales and No. 21 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales.

2 Chainz’s combined activity between his new album and various song placements helps the rapper return to the Billboard Artist 100 ranking at No. 14. The re-entry marks his first appearance since February 2018, and is his second-highest placement ever on the weekly list, following his No. 6 showing on the chart dated July 8, 2017.

The Eagles Beat Out Michael Jackson For Best-Selling Album Of All Time

According to The Associated Press The Eagles record, Their Greatest Hits 197101975, is now certified 38x Platinum. Based on The Recording Industry Association of America, this means the record is above Michael Jackson's Thriller, which is 33x Platinum.
The Eagles held this spot once before for about 10 years until Jackson's Thriller claimed the number one spot after his passing in 2009.

Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 features hits, including "Take It Easy," "Heartache Tonight," "Lyin' Eyes," "Desperado," "Take It To The Limit" and "Tequila Sunrise."

This week's rundown of Pure Album Sales showcases the best-selling albums of country music. See the entire chart with some notables here!

There wasn't any big releases last week so this chart is largely the same but Florida Georgia Line remains at #1 here with Can't Say I Ain't Country, their latest release (now three weeks old). Luke Combs is sitting at #2 with This One's For You (Too). Kacey Musgraves is at #3 with Golden Hour while Chris Stapleton sits at #4 with Traveller. Rounding out the Top 5 is Kane Brown's Experiment. He also rounds out the Top 10 with his self-titled album. In between #5 and #10 sit Elvis Presley, Chris Stapleton, Carrie Underwood and Josh Turner, Respectively.

The week's biggest debut belongs to The Cactus Blossoms, an Everly Brothers-like vocal duo. Other newcomers include Ray Scott with his sweet Honky Tonk Heart EP, Cassadee Pope's From the Vault, We Make Our Own from Smithfield and Dan Auerbach protege, Dee White and his new album Southern Gentleman.
