Little Nas X is thanking FGL and Boobie Rexha for opening the door. The destruction of country music and “country” radio continues. This comment is rich considering the complaints about radio all the time and a huge issue with radio is that they don't play women. Oh it's also misogynistic.

While I do think the "boobie" comment was unnecessary, though it could be argued she's famous because of her sex appeal (not that there's anything wrong with that), the complaints still stand. If you couldn't tell, a lot of men in country music prop up women in pop, rather than women in country. Bebe Rexha, along with the Julia Michaels-Keith Urban collaboration, were examples of that. Country radio keeps snubbing the actual women in the country genre. That's the complaint, that's not just solved by throwing any woman at a track. That'd be like saying let's put Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, and Katy Perry on country radio... there will be women, right?

What's the definition of a country song? The definition of a country song is what you want it to be. People bickering over what they deem country or not country are just arguing what their opinion of country music is. Someone in 1960 would argue that most modern country "isn't country." because it's not what they're familiar with. OTR has elements of country in it. Is it pure country? No. Is it part country? Yes. Therefore I believe it can be played on country radio. Going by the logic that genres are meaningless and subjective we can argue that The Harry Potter series is the biggest horror movies of all time since it has witches and monsters. It’s also the biggest Romance movies and novels too. Genres are important and radio doesn’t decide them, so while I agree radio can play it if they want, the first point that you quoted from Caviar is more what I’m addressing.

There’s a good 15 songs on the charts that should be on the pop charts (being generous). Good for Lil Nas X and Billy Ray for doing this

You must’ve missed this line in “Old Country Road”: “Bull ridin’ and boobies, Cowboy hat from Gucci” I purposely spelled Bebe’s name wrong just to see how many people would ignore the fact that the same word is in this song, but instead judge me for using it. Oh the irony... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Hey matty, I didn’t see you saying THIS SONG is misogynistic. I’d assume you think so? Or are you that hypocritical?

There’s a difference between commenting on liking breasts (or whatever) and reducing a single person to just that thing.

There’s a big difference between abstractly and playfully using the word “boobies” and calling a woman “Boobie” like it’s her name. If you don’t see that, God help you.

The country board is wildin I don't think this is country, but it's definitely country influenced. Some of y'all are overdoing it with the "best country song of all time" bs tho.

If your problem is that there's over a dozen songs on the country charts that shouldn't be, why does adding a 16th make you happy? "Old Town Road" being erroneously classified as country by his management isn't going to change anything about the songs by country artists that you feel don't belong on the airwaves. I'd love if the attempt at trolling the Hot Country Songs chart by Lil Nas X here led to a change in how the chart is tabulated to eliminate the crossover airplay component that paved the way for "Meant to Be" to spend almost a full year at #1 so the chart isn't as manipulated by crossover success, but that's the only possibly positive outcome I could see from this.

MTB didn't raise eyebrows because the song was basically a FGL single and they're one of the format's biggest stars, and I can assure you that supposed 'pop' songs like "Blue Tacoma" aren't going anywhere else so I'm not sure what "Old Town Road" is going to do for you is all I'm getting at. I could see it leading to an adjustment of the HCS chart methodology, which I'd personally be more than happy with, but your issue seems to be with what songs are getting played on country radio and I don't see that changing. Country radio isn't going to drop Thomas Rhett (i.e.) and ship him off to pop radio because of OTR.

If it wasn't mentioned earlier, radio is now going to play the remix as the official, so Mr. Cyrus will be credited next week.

If this ends up being a big hit on the country charts, I could see the door they’ve opened for pop songs to either be opened wider, or closed. I like that there’s actually discussion now.

If Billboard decides to put this back on Hot Country Songs, it will be #1 for many weeks. I'm fine enough with that (we just lived through a 50 week #1 song), but what exactly will the explanation be. What was the original story in the first place? I'm almost positive I remember seeing it at #19 on the HCS chart at some point, but maybe it was erased entirely? Billboard does almost nothing retroactively, so would they just put it #1, or would they go 19, OFF, 1, or 19, 1, 1?

Did Nelly and Tim McGraw's "Over and Over" chart on Country at all? It did not receive Country airplay so it didn't chart. The chart was based solely on spins at that time (I think this was before audience).

Though I'd rather not have these songs leading at #1 for so long.

But has this got any spins this week? This is showing no spins this week other than WMAD in Madison, Wisconsin (22 spins) and KUPL in Portland, Oregon (7 spins). The iHeartMedia syndicated spins from The Bobby Bones Show, are no longer being reflected. If that’s the case, this will fall off the Billboard Country Airplay chart this Monday.

So, all other arguments aside about this song, it’s a very calculated add for that station.

Good article on the issues re this song. Billboard changed their rules which is why FGL and Rexha charted. slate.com/culture/2019/04/lil-nas-x-old-town-road-billboard-country-charts-hot-100.html?fbclid=IwAR1HW3egNnivZhd8r2qS1eCpSd0zmmGxJ1NhrQ_2DBiCnU70k73D545esJ0Also, Rolling Stone quotes his manager - "None of this made much of a difference to Lil Nas X four months ago. He released “Old Town Road,” which suggests an unreleased Key & Peele spoof of the sub-genre dubbed “hick-hop,” in the first week of December, when the internet was crawling with cowboy memes. “[Lil Nas X] is very internet savvy — he understands how to play with the internet and manipulate it to create viral moments,” Kang says. His team started communicating with Lil Nas X on December 18. Lil Nas X was shrewd about positioning his banjo hip-pop mash. “On SoundCloud, he listed it as a country record,” Kang says. “On iTunes, he listed it as a country record. He was going to these spaces, gaining a little bit of traction on their country charts, and there’s a way to manipulate the algorithm to push your track to the top. That’s favorable versus trying to go to the rap format to compete with the most popular songs in the world.”

Honestly, it's not a bad song. Perhaps the best of its particular subgenre since I Play Chicken with The Train.
But I can't see too many country stations going on board with this. If they thought Downtown's Dead and Vacation were too out there...well, they just got another think coming.
