I can’t believe folks on Twitter are saying that she’s “appropriating” African culture. Is that even a thing??

I can’t believe folks on Twitter are saying that she’s “appropriating” African culture. Is that even a thing?? Twitter continues to relish in its stupidity. Beyoncé's heritage IS African culture, so there's no way she can appropriate it. Especially when her film and accompanying music all deal with Africa, blatantly make that obvious, and heavily feature African artists.

I can't believe people take the average person on Twitter, who barely graduated high school, seriously.
No desire to even get a free trial of Disney+ to watch this. Someone alert me when this is made available elsewhere.

Idk, there seems to be a growing sentiment among some continentals (mostly online, probably) that black Americans apparently aren’t “African” enough, and that wearing dashikis, kente cloth, etc is offensive to them because we don’t have a “culture”. Wasn’t there some drama about Beyonce playing the South African woman Sara Baartman (sp?). The title is literally “Black is King”, but to some, she ain’t black enough...I hate the internet sometimes.

Black excellence and opulence were epitomized with this. Visually stunning and easily her best creative work to date.

I can’t believe folks on Twitter are saying that she’s “appropriating” African culture. Is that even a thing?? I think this is a rather complicated issue actually. As an black American woman in 2020 I guess there's a lot in the film that's not actually a part of Beyoncé's life, even though they are for people that actually leave in Africa. Somebody in Africa and somebody in America do not share the same culture. And there's also the thing that African artists have been producing their own art, but when a wealthy American woman does then suddenly she gets all the attention and the applause. Not that it's Beyoncé's fault, but the public worldwide is definitely less open to noticing African culture than they are to watching Beyoncé's version of African culture.

But she’s of African descent too, tho? Regardless of location, isn’t Beyoncé’s art an extension of African culture? We’re all black all the same, only difference is boat stops, I guess. Or so I thought.

I find it funny that people are giving her flack and saying it’s cultural appropriation when 95% of the people she collaborated with on the album and visual are literally African. All the looks and outfits were made/ put together by African creatives like come on y’all seriously.
Beyoncé could literally sneeze and people will criticize and drag her for it. I am by no means apart of the Beyhive or a Stan by the way. I’m really sick and tired of the Beyoncé hate train it’s really redundant at this point. I wish people would come out and just say they hate Beyoncé and move on because some of these criticisms legit make no sense.

Or so I thought. This is very complicated I guess, but I think a valid discussion could come from it. I understand many Africans felt offended and started posting pictures of their hometowns, skyscrapers, universities, trying to show that Africa is not just this mythical tribal image Europeans and Americans have of it.

I mean, China isn't just dragons and rice ponds, Australia isn't just desert and kangaroos, Canada isn't just snow and ice, Mexico isn't just tequila and adobe houses. All of these places have cultural significances that appear in media around the world. Why would Africa be any different? Of course Africa has skyscrapers and bustling cities, everywhere does, but that's not interesting or entertaining, has little to do with the historic culture of any region, and isn't the focus of this project. This all really feels like people just wanting to be mad to be mad.

Oh and another thing if you cannot adequately critique a piece of art if you haven’t seen/experienced or listened to it, some of these people haven’t even seen “Black is King” but they are over here denouncing the project and doing the most. Someone make it make sense

Sure, but the simple fact that we are comparing countries (China, Mexico, Canada) to an entire continent is already part of the problem. But this is not new and definitely Beyoncé is not the one to blame for it.

I've been obsessed with it this week! So good It's been stuck in my head ever since it came out and I keep finding myself humming the melody sometimes I liked it when it came out last year but BLACK IS KING just turned it into my favorite Beyoncé-led track in a while (and I LOVE "BLACK PARADE" and "Brown Skin Girl" but "ALREADY" hits differently)
