Right, there was no streaming 30-40 years ago in its existing form, in the sense that no one called it "streaming"
However, streaming is just another way of saying 'on demand radio'
Now on-demand radio existed 30-40 years ago but in a different form. You always had the power to change the station if you didn't like the song. You also had request lines as well, much like today.
You also had the power to buy the song like you do today
And #1 30-40 years ago was the combined leader of the existing components (radio and sales in this case) much like today
So really not that much different after all

Instead of complaining about OTR’s potential to tie/brake record, how about some serious props: 1) it gained on all 3 metrics during 10th week at #1; and 2) it’s consistently massive lead - those point totals are impressive. And I have no strong feelings about OTR either way - but I do like it when songs defy expectations and chart logic. I’m

What makes it ridiculous? Old Town Road, is and remains a streaming monster like nothing that has come out before. It continues to be the top seller and will soon be the top song at radio. The fact that Katy won't ever get #1 means at the time of release, that song did not have the same impact. The same goes for Billie and anyone else that has recently released It's not like the way it was 30 to 40 years ago. 30-40 years ago, the chart was based on loosely-estimated (and easily manipulated) reports from stores and radio stations manually listing their top singles. Today the data is so precise we can know exactly how many times a song was purchased or even heard. I often don’t like or have never even heard what some of the big hits are, but the billboard chart system is the most accurate it’s ever been.

Drake is teasing on ig that if the Raptors win tonight’s game, he’ll be dropping a new song. If he drops it on Friday with a music video and a radio deal, it might be able to knock out OTR.

I doubt Drake is gonna drop an official single now, especially after No Guidance was just released. It might just be a loosie or a freestyle

Happy to see SHAED debut! It feels like that's a big hit in the making. It's very reminiscent of the alt pop sound prominent in 2012-2014.
Also that's a solid debut for Miley. Given the EP released without a true lead single and Mother's Daughter wasn't selected as the lead until several days into its release so there's not much airplay to speak of to bolster its sales and streaming, #54 is pretty good. It'll more than likely rise as airplay grows.
Also a great debut for Katy. This track really was going to be the thing that determined where her career was heading after how poorly Bon Apetit, Swish Swish, and 365 performed. To see it come in at #15 and be on track to be her first lead top 10 on pop since Chained to the Rhythm is amazing!
Press, however, is just disappointing. I get that it wasn't pushed to radio immediately, but still, the Instagram clip is the most watched video on Instagram ever and the buzz for the track was huge after that. The drop off from that to how it performed on release is staggering. But, then again, that clip is, what, 5 months old now? Probably shouldn't have teased it so far out from its release.

To be honest at this point even with the gains OTR is showing the same signs of every other #1 hit on its way out - Radio gains are finally slowing down, It's off #1 on all major streaming platforms, and sales is sales so who cares tbh. That is, of course, if you disregard the fact that it has inexplicably huge youtube that literally over quadrupled the #2 in its 10th week at said spot.

June 14, 1969 03 06 In The Ghetto - Elvis Presley
Probably the closest Elvis ever got to a "protest" or "socially conscious" song.
June 17, 1989 10 13 Cry - Waterfront
The year I graduated high school and I was very tuned in to the charts that year. Still, I have no memory whatsoever of this song.

Does anyone else see that on billboard’s webpage it says that Billie Eilish and “bad guy” peaked at number one?

Apparently Billboard is crediting ME! as a #1 hit now... Yeah lol, there’s something wrong cause both the billboard Hot 100 and billboard 200 are saying almost every song and album is number one minus a couple here and there

Thought it was something they did wrong especially as it happened after its peak weak :x

Don't sass, he gets his mitts on the charts not posted to the public site (of particular interest being Bubbling Under and Recurrent Songs), and for that service, I'm extremely thankful.
