Post's song is not meme-able. I would compare it to ''All My Friends''. And it has a lengthy Young Thug verse that is going to be make it polarizing. You guys need to accept and make peace with the fact that Old Town Road is going to break the record. That song goes hard! Hopefully posty's song sounds like that one.

Rose "Payola" Nylund I think you could make a case that artists care A LOT, lol. Artists brag about #1 albums, they brag when their songs do well, they brag when their tours do well. They love getting rave reviews for their work. They love winning awards. Anything that can validate their work, artists love. I think it's very safe to assume that. Just look at how many artists quote chartdata whenever he tweets out one of their accomplishments? If you win a Grammy as an artist, you're a Grammy-winning artist. You sell a couple million albums and singles, you become a Platinum-selling artist. You sell out a couple of arenas and you become an arena veteran. All these things matter even beyond bragging rights because they help artists make a case when signing deals of any kind or negotiating how much they could get paid by various brands or for performances in festivals/events. The more you have to bargain with, the better and the notable achievements you have, the better. It all ties into each other.

I wouldn't make that comparison because while most students don't care to broadcast their academic performance to the entire world, MOST artists care that their stats are out there. It's one thing for an artist to know their album has moved 5 million units in the US. It's another thing to be able to post proof that it's done that and share that info with fans and the rest of the world. That's the whole idea behind plaques. To have something official and rock solid you can point to as proof of your success. Certifications also matter to artists because their total count of records sold remains inaccurate until those certifications are made. Artists/labels care about broadcasting their success and achievements and that's why bodies like the RIAA exist in the first place. Can you speak for the artists though? Iβd be curious to know if they really care about that stuff and how much they care about the distinction between label/retail confirmation and recording industry certification. I suppose if they truly cared, they could pony up the cost of the plaque. Every artist is different. But many acts (or their labels, rather) update their certs right before a new album/single drop, so they could care for promotional purposes if nothing else. My main quibble re: the certification process is that artists can't request a cert audit themselves. One should not have to rely on the label, whom the artist may or may not even be signed to years later, to put in the application. I'm sure we'd see a lot more updated certs if the artists didn't have to rely on a middleman to get it. All that said, the whole thing can be sidestepped with proper phrasing. I.e. that chartdata tweet about OTR should have said "Old Town Road has now moved 10 million SPS units, making it only the second song in chart history to be eligible for a diamond certification while still #1." We all know it isn't deemed 'official' without RIAA's recognition and the plaque makes for a great photo op, but that shouldn't stop anyone who has been tracking the numbers from putting those numbers out there and being content with that. Plus, there's always a lag between becoming eligible for certification and actually being certified - RIAA gives itself a 30-day time limit from the time of application - so it would benefit an act to crow about the eligibility (esp. if it's a record-setting feat). There's a good chance OTR won't still be #1 if/when RIAA finally confirms it and I think it would be inaccurate and unfair if he wasn't able to 'claim' that achievement simply because he had to wait on an audit to confirm what we already know.

Artists are expected to brag but I seriously doubt most of them actually do it because they want to. An old friend of mine used to record music and has worked with some professional artists and he had mentioned once about how asking how many copies an artist (small time) sold of an album can be considered rude or intrusive similarly to asking how much a neighbour makes on their paycheque. Often times for major artists this info is made available because fans care about it so they feed off of that Iβm sure but I doubt artists actually like bragging the way you describe. Thereβs one thing to be proud of achievements from your job, we all are, but to brag about it - most people donβt like doing it or listening to it. In music itβs part of the culture.

In this instance, I'm referring strictly to mainstream acts. Of course a small time act who doesn't see much mainstream success wouldn't want to brag about achievements they probably don't have, lol. I'm just saying artists take pride when their work gets recognized. Telling the world about the success/good reception of their work is an extension of that pride. A lot of artists revel in their success, but that's also varies from person to person. Some people are more laid back when it comes to bragging about their achievements.

What's with all of the mid-week MVs? We got Swervin, Mother's Daughter, My Type, Bussdown and Sanguine Paradise in the middle of the week.

I think, in terms of album sales, many donβt care because ultimately the record company keeps most of that. Just like if you work at a job like a restaurant and you made a bunch of money for the day. Doubt youβd go home and brag about it

I've heard rumors it'll be called "Diamonds". Wonder what it will sound like. It'll probably not even reach #1, I think Rih peaked with We Found Love honestly since it was so big. I mean, You Da One only reached #14 and Where Have You Been only reached #5. She's definitely done at this point.

Even without on-demand streams, radio airplay and pure sales, it's still pulling in a massive amount of it's streams from user-generated videos and that's more than enough to give it an edge over other songs that don't have the same kind of engagement. Agreed. Some people seem to be in denial that it has been getting a fair share of weekly streams from memes. Some denial, but also some surprise that the bottom hasnβt dropped out more. What other song has had this high of user generated video streams for this long?

Personally, I'm excited about the new music releases we'll be getting in the month of July. Last week saw a couple of artists drop songs/albums and I enjoyed most of them. MGK and Dreamville release albums tomorrow, along with Post Malone's new single. On Friday, the 12th of July, Ed Sheeran, BANKS and Yuna all release new albums. On Friday, the 19th of July, Freya Ridings, Iggy Azealea and Sabrina Carpenter all release new albums. We might also get new singles in any of the upcoming weeks from notable artists who just haven't made those announcements yet. I really do hope the second half of the year sees a steady stream of better albums and music period being released. The first half of 2019 was a tough one to get through. Sam Smith is releasing his lead on July 19th

that "OTR is diamond" embarrassment could have all been avoided if people stopped it with the huuuuge misconception that UGC streams count towards certifications. i didn't clock that until last month that columbia records intern is stupid for not actually checking before tweeting. and chart data needs to stop it with the "eligible" tweets, bc there's almost no way to figure out UGC vs non-UGC video streams (unless you stalk the Top music videos chart provided by YouTube on their charts page and add up all of the weekly numbers availabe)

Just realized the top 4 on Hot 100: Lil Nas - Born 1999, age 20 Shawn Mendes - Born 1998, aged 20 Camila Cabello - Born 1997, aged 22 Billie Eilish - Born 2001, age 17 Khalid - Born 1998, age 21
Officially the new generation of hit makers has come. We are now at the point of entering a new decade and stars like Rihanna/Katy/Drake/Bruno/Taylor/etc are in their 30s and officially the βveteransβ. Similar to how Eminem/Britney/BeyoncΓ©/Usher/etc entered the 2010s in comparison to them.

What other song has had this high of user generated video streams for this long? Harlem Shake didn't last as long. Gangnam Style would have benefited had YouTube counted toward the Hot 100 streaming component. Those are the two songs that come to mind.
