70. Operation Spirit - LiveI did what I could with this one , and it pretty much falls where I thought it should anyway. 69. Popular Creeps - Chris Mars120 minutes was MTV trying to be indie before Indie's time. Good rock vibe here. 68. The Sweetest Drop - Peter MurphyThis was not Peter Murphy at his best. Call me back when "Cuts You Up" shows up. 67. Tell Me When Did Things Go So Wrong - The SmithereensI really dug this true Alternative Rock vibe. Great guitar work 66. These Are Days - 10,000 ManiacsOf course my favorite 10,000 Maniacs gets the least love. 65. Weirdo - The CharlatansHow does a song I never heard before turn up at #2 for the YE rd? This song pretty much lived up to its name. Weird elektro semi stuff...Not a fan. 64. Heaven Sent - INXSThe riffs here were decent enuff to get top 50 on my list. Still miles away from their 80's greatness. 63. Hello Cruel World - EThis sorta sounds like something that could chart on Alternative Chart 2019. Meaning I didn't care for it too much. 62. Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now) - CrackerMan this was Cheeeeesey. 61. Why - Annie Lennox...and of course I'm in the top half. I did like "Walking On Broken Glass" even more. Where is that one? It was #59 on 91x and #36 on KROQ. Billboard is lame. 60. One Way - LevellersThis was a great song. First time listen but hit my melodic button just fine. 59. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses - U2I definitely wouldn't leave you people in charge of my horses. 58. Even Better Than the Real Thing - U2Even better my asss. . WTF was that house shit? That is not the song I ranked. That's not the song I gave a #30 to. This is what I remember hearing on the radio. 57. Through an Open Window - Cliffs of DooneenThis did sound a bit like U2, but it needed more meat on the rind. Not a bad song tho. 56. We Are Each Other - The Beautiful SouthAnother great melodic first listen. This is more 80's than you realize. Where the hell is my #100? Why is it always that PULSE rds seems to choose one of my bottom tanks and decide that for some out of this world reason it's one of the better songs of the year? It's an awful, noizy mess that needs to GTFO soon.

EXTRA
Pain Lies on the Riverside Live
Share your thoughts about this song below! This was the first song I ever heard by them, and I liked that they were a Pennsylvania band. A good, uptempo jangle-pop song. EXTRA
Justified and Ancient The KLF f/Tammy Wynette
Share your thoughts about this song below! An unusual song by an unusual collaboration, but I enjoy it! EXTRA
Even Flow Pearl Jam
Share your thoughts about this song below! Am I the only one who's noticed that there's a slightly different mix of this song that gets some radio airplay? I like the album mix better. EXTRA
I Want to Touch You Catherine Wheel
Share your thoughts about this song below! I love this song! I actually enjoy the "wall of noise" effect, with the extra reverb and the vocals mixed a bit lower. The chord progression is interesting too. I'd have this song in my Top 5 for sure if this was included in the rankdown. EXTRA
All I Want Toad the Wet Sprocket
Share your thoughts about this song below! Like "Why," this is another song with lyrics that hit me hard. Despite the melancholia, this song brings back fond memories of my family vacation on Long Island in the summer of 1992. I actually got to visit the observation deck on top of the South Tower of the World Trade Center during that trip, and I wish we had digital cameras back then. I'll never forget the sight, with the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building to the north, the Statue of Liberty to the south, and the North Tower and its antenna looming large right next door. Good times.

I’m very surprised that “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses” was my first top 10 loss. Hopefully I don’t lose another one for a while, my closeness for this rankdown has been horrible

70. Operation Spirit (47): Not my favorite from Live (probably #7 or #8 amongst their singles), but still a strong enough rock song to make it to my top half in this RD.
69. Popular Creeps (87): This was catchy but simple, plus those vocals are one of the worst in this RD and made me significantly penalize it.
68. The Sweetest Drop (57): Good enough discovery with some interesting retro feel.
67. Tell Me When Did Things Go So Wrong (97): I wanted to like this and gave it a chance but it was just too poppy and vanilla for me. Nothing interesting in a list with a high number of interesting songs.
66. These Are Days (37): This is quite a chill song that should've been a bit higher. I'd admit that I like Candy and Because a bit more than this one, but not by much.
65. Weirdo (26): Oh! I didn't care much for this song back in 1992, even though it was a big hit back home. I've grown to like it with time.
64. Heaven Sent (63): Another Almost-P-P-P-PERFECT RANKING!! I ranked it at #18 in the INXS RD as it's far from one of their best songs. Good to see NET as the highest INXS song in this RD.
63. Hello Cruel World (93): I slightly under-ranked this first-listen, as I felt it was a bit simple and monotonous
62. Teen Angst (40): Quite a popular song back in the day, that I still have a soft spot for. It's catchy and energetic, and brings back good memories.
61. Why (9): Awwww. I can agree that this is more an AC than an Alt song, but we have barely had opportunities to rank Annie at all. In any case, for this RD I've not penalized songs for not being rock enough, I've just ranked them for how good I think they are --and this is one of my favorite Annie Lennox songs, and her first of 4 personal chart-toppers. Such a quality song should've made the top 50...
60. One Way (25): I had forgotten about this song, but it was good to hear it again after 20+ years. The more I heard it, the more I liked it, and I ended ranking it ~20 spots higher than I thought I was gonna rank it.
59. Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (11): I thought this was going to be my 3rd highest U2 song, but ended up being my 2nd highest the more I listened to it. It was already one of my favorites off Achtung Baby, but the melody, vocals and production grabbed me even more strongly now that I heard it again for this RD. I’ve always considered it better than two other U2 songs in this RD…
58. Even Better Than The Real Thing (52): I’ve never been a huge fan of this song. I liked the Perfecto remix better than the original, but stll this wasn’t one of my top 5 songs off AB. Not a bad song by any means, though, so good to see it in the 50s.
57. Through An Open Window (84): I had a bit of a hard time to rank this one. It went up to my 60s, but in the end I felt it was a bit monotonous and I liked a few other songs more.
56. We Are Each Other (29): Another song that I hadn’t heard in over 20 years, but I did remember fondly. It’s a great representative of the melodic, classic-like rock of the early 90s, especially the 2-part chorus and the bridge.

- Justified and Ancient (KLF f/ Tammy Wynette): Oh, yeah!! Another great representative of Alt dance music. I really liked all KLF singles, but this one was my favorite. It topped my personal chart for a couple of weeks and was one of my top 10 songs of the year. This is what I consider the best Dance + Country collaboration ever.
- Pain Lies on the Riverside (Live): This is just ok for me, and not in my top 10 of Live’s singles.
- Goodbye Cruel World (Shakespear’s Sister): It was a good dance – rock combo, but IMO it didn’t have the punch and uniqueness of the other 3 singles (except for the vocals) from Hormonally Yours.
- Even Flow (Pearl Jam): Just like with Lithium, I’m surprised that this classic wasn’t a bigger hit in Alt. Not among my top 5 PJ songs, but a good rock song anyway.
- All I Want (Toad the Wet Sprockett): A short but effective melodic rock song that had lots of great components, from the drum and guitar intro to the melody throughout the song, vocals, and lyrics. Great memories of my last year at school as well ☺ This peaked at #2 in my personal chart --their first of a handful of personal top 10s.
- I Want To Touch You (Catherine Wheel): This is good! I hadn’t heard it before, but I completely dig this in terms of music, vocals, vibe.

Alright, while we're still under caution, I want you to go out and hit my #9 song. Hit your #9 song? Hit my #9 song. What for? You've hit everything else on my list and I want you to be perfect.
85. Planet Love---The song had a nice retro feel to it like it was from the 1960s. Too bad it grew too repetitious towards the end.
84. Move Any Mountain---The chorus of this song is sung well enough and the rapping is OK. But the vocals on the verses was a hot mess and that's enough for a spot on my bottom 10.
83. Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye---The guitar was fine and the vocals were decent.
82. Ghost of Texas Ladies's Man---What's that buzzing noise in the beginning? Dunno, but the storytelling was solid and that finale was haunting.
81. Divine Thing---After what was an odd start, this song started to pick up steam...just enough to make my top half.
80. Lover (to Infinity and Beyond)---This song suffered from excessive repetition and kind of droned on as it went.
79. She's Mad---I was on board with David Byrne's singing with this one. But it was kind of mad that they tried to mix 2-3 songs together.
78. What Are We Gonna Do---This Earth Day song was too earnest for its own good, but largely stayed out of its own way outside of some of those lyrics.
77. You Don't Understand---I dug the group vocals, but what kept me enthralled was how they amped up the intensity as the song went on...a technique used by such songs as Hello and Disturbed's cover of Sound of Silence.
76. Sax and Violins---I don't think I heard much of either song in the title, but I'm not sure what the marimba was doing. It felt a bit too poppy for my taste. Hope they get better than this!
75. Spiritual High---Another Enigma wannabe and not even Chrissy Hynde's voice can save this one. There's a reason we've heard more from Enigma and less from these copycat/clones.
74. Suck My Kiss---The guitar was rock solid, the vocals were fine. But the lyrics? Um, OK.
73. It's a Shame About Ray---It's a shame most of you never got into the Lemonheads. They had some good music.
72. Dyslexic Heart---Westerberg's song had some clever lyrics, but his voice strained too much on the high notes.
71. Galileo---How many souls get it right? Not nearly enough of them here. The vocals were close to fine, but the verses and chorus struggled to mesh together.
Why is my #100 still in this one?
70. Operation Spirit---I was here with Live from the earliest songs. This was decent.
69. Popular Creeps---This song scored with interesting lyrics and decent vocals.
68. The Sweetest Drop---This felt like the right kind of over the top with nice guitar playing and vocals.
67. Tell Me Where Did Things Go So Wrong?---Right about this point. This was a great British pop/rock song and yeah, this was one of my favorite first time listens.
66. These Are Days---It was a decent song but it felt like Natalie Merchant was holding back vocally.
65. Weirdo---Wanted to like this, but it felt like 2-3 different songs out there.
64. Heaven Sent---It's solid enough rock from INXS, although I would like to have seen this make the top half.
63. Hello, Cruel World---It was a song that I wavered between OK and decent. So yeah, this was a bit hard to rank. One look at his personal life and everything that's happened and I feel terrible for him.
62. Teen Angst---I found the protagonist borderline obnoxious, but the instruments and a few decent lyrics kinda saved this to a point.
61. Why---I don't think you know how I feel...you don't know how I feel. The vocals and lyrics were both rock solid and the ending was pitch perfect. Hoping we got more from her in 1991.
60. One Way---Speaking of great finds, this was the other one. Everything was just on point. Ugh at this not making the top half.
59. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses---The opening notes of this song caused it to get off on a bad start, but it started to cantor by the end. I don't feel bad about this song's place.
58. Even Better Than the Real Thing---On the other hand, I feel terrible that this couldn't make top half. The vocals and instruments were on point and the lyrics were fine. Hoping the other three end up in the top half.
57. Through an Open Window---The instrument playing was fine, but the vocals were the problem as they just droned on.
56. We Are Each Other---Nice chill song with solid vocals.
Wait, seriously? Is my #100 going to make the top half or significantly higher? With those lyrics? I thought the protagonist of Teen Angst was bad enough, but at least I think it might have been done in the context of the song. The closer this gets to the top, the worse I'm going to look at those voting...particularly if you go high enough. That is all.

Extras:
Stay---Ah yes! This would have made my top 5 easily, even maybe my #1. Detroit had some great higher vocals and Siobhan Fahey from Bananarama provided the lower octaves. The song starts out nice and sweet as Detroit is singing out to a lover, Fahey threatens things in the bridge, and Detroit grows more desperate at the climax. It also led to this hilarious parody by the ladies also known for Absolutely Fabulous:
Lithium---You'll have to wait until 1992 Active to see how I rated this one.
Pain Lies on the Riverside---The songs from this first album feels like Live trying to get their feet wet. Was a decent song, but would it go much higher than Operation Spirit? Probably not.
Justified and Ancient---Remember when I called I'm Too Sexy a guilty pleasure? This is like that, but without the guilt. Tammy's vocals sell this one. The dance portions are fun as well. I'm guessing Doc hates this one? Be sure to get the CD and not the tape...which didn't feature the vocals and was just the KLF. That one's a nope.
Goodbye, Cruel World---I don't remember this as much as I Don't Care and My 17th Apology to You? Yeah, I owned the tape/CD, why do you ask?
Even Flow---Wait until 1992 Active.
All I Want---This would have done well for me. Probably a top 10 here.
Juanca's Extras:
Lift Me Up---Dug the horns. The video was most impressive reminding me of Forrest Gump in how it played around with the past and present. Lyrics could have been a tad better. But still, not bad.
Just Another Day---Maybe a bit too painfully earnest, but it was decent. I think I preferred his other song called Whipped.
Would I Lie to You?---Another song that felt a bit too earnest, but the doo wop vocals sold it better than Secada. Not bad.
Please Don't Go---Hmm, this was OK. Maybe too simple a song, though.
No Son of Mine---This felt a bit darker than normal from Genesis. I kind of wish they did more often. Trying to get a reconciliation with his father who's closed the door to his heart, it feels visceral and real.
Hold on My Heart---This was painfully earnest from Genesis. A pass for me.
I'd Die Without You---I'm not against all songs that are earnest. Here's a good example of one that works. The vocals dig to the desperation of one man who would do anything for the one he loves.

Tonight's reveals begin on the tamer end of things, and with a multiple-song artist. Of #55's 12 top half ranks, four are top 25s, and one is a top 10. Three bottom 20s, and its only bottom 15 is a bottom 10.

Of the ten lowest SDs, only the tenth lowest is still hanging around - but it's going away at #54.
#54 is the last song to not have any top 20s. 14 top half ranks, and three are top 30. No bottom 10s, but three bottom 20s. This song was briefly in the top 25.

#53 only has the 16th highest SD. Which is surprising considering some of the higher losses here. All five of its top 30s are top 15s. Only three are top 10s...but one is a #2. The other two? Both are #1s.
There's three bottom 10s to boot, as well - one is a clearer.

Two #1s - from someone with an INXS avatar and from another person who hosted a rankdown of them. My condolences. 53

The best INXS song we've ranked so far, which isn't really that much of an accomplishment, but I did like this.

#52 has one (low) top 10, two more top 20s, and eight more top 50s. There's only one bottom 20. Sounds like it should have a low SD, right?
The problem is, the lone bottom 20 is a #100.

Yes, this is the "Roll to Me" band. And believe it or not, we'll be ranking them again (on both Alt and Active) in 1990. 52

Completely fine, but not particularly special.
Still baffles me that we didn't rank "Roll to Me" in a rock chart rankdown.

What song is just missing out on the top half? A song with no top 10s or bottom 15s! There's only one top 20 here, along with ten other top 50s. Three placed it in their bottom half. This song was briefly in the top 30, but otherwise spent most of its time in the 40s and 50s.
