Only one Pearl Jam and one Nirvana song should have stuck around this long. There are still a few great songs in here , but its not really work out playlist worthy. It's like going to a strip bar where the girls keep their clothes on. Ironically enough there was this one chick who always put on " Smells Like Teen Spirit" to do her dance. What songs are you surprised made it?For PULSE none. maybe just " Remedy"What songs are you disappointed missed out?"Machine Gun", "One Shot Of Poison" "I Just Wanna " oh you meant from the top 100? Wanna make some predictions?!
I predict I'm going to start taking heavy meds after witnessing this RD. 1. Pearl Jam - Alive or Pearl Jam - Even Flow. Take your pick . , but it won't be "Jeremy". I can bet my "Cherry Pie" CD on that. 2. "" 3. Nirvana - Come as You Arebecause it's the one without the "party Rock" riff 4. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under the BridgeHopefully its status on Poptart also helps this on into the top 5. 5. Metallica - The Unforgiven
At least one Metallica makes the top 5. 6. Pearl Jam - Jeremybecause I remember people making fun of his vocal performance. 7. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen SpiritThis might be too "Party rock" for some. It's there best well known song. He still sounds like a troll, but it rocks. I love this one. Just don't tell the Glam rock crowd or they will lynch me. 8. Metallica - Wherever I May Roambecause its the one I preferred 9. T he Black Crowes - Remedybecause it's my highest song left. 10. Temple of the Dog - Hunger StrikeLet's end this strike a.s.a.p.

song comments extended version: 30. Friday I'm in Love - The Cure First I still really love this song, but really felt too lovey dovey in this group of songs. It's odd Mainstream would choose this song to send to Rock radio format. Furthermore I don't remember KLOS or even KMET ever playing the Cure. They surely had some Mainstream Rock album material like "Love Song" which was big rotation on KQLZ 100.3 Pirate Radio . The 80's station that showcased hair/Glam Metal, but this song wasn't cut for the job. 29. Road to Nowhere - Ozzy Osbourne This one on the other hand was picture perfect. The production on Ozzy's records was always top notch. A British Powerballad was so much different than a L.A. Metal Scene one. You could hear it in Def Leppard and Whitesnake as well. They style was larger than life arena sound powerballads with strong melodies that penetrated right into the soul and heart of the listeners while the ballads from Warrant, Poison, Aerosmith, Bonjovi, Guns N' Roses, Kiss had a slight Blusey/Country western hint to them. Just as strong in the lyrics, but maybe just a tad softer in the music department. 28. Thorn in My Pride - The Black Crowes I can spread out my Black Crowes jams evenly among my list. Some I really like and some are just a tad too Bluesy for my taste. THis one even had Santana guitar style hints. I like Santana but that "Oye Como Va" vibe can be a little too much for me. 27. Drive - R.E.M. I can already smell who will tank "Shiny Happy People" for being a bit too shiny, but I for one would prefer shiny to this meloncholy borefest without any drive in the music whatsoever. Every time you think the song is going to rev up it starts to idle and just reverts to the same old chords at the start of the verses. I just could never get into that particular composition. Pity because Michael sounds good. 26. No Son of Mine - Genesis This was a good quality Genesis song. It actually included elements from "In The Air Tonight" in the intr o. I wish this would have made the next Alt RD where I would have felt free to rank it really high. 25. Sting Me - The Black Crowes This is more up my Black Crowes alley way. A sure fire intro and guitarworks sting veins pumping almost immediately. The bluesy vibe really works with his vocals this time around. This has some Rolling Stones blood running through it too. 24. Mama, I'm Coming Home - Ozzy Osbourne I remember how great Ozzy sounded on "Close My Eyes Forever" with Lita ,and thought Ozzy should do more Powerballads. They are the Glam in thing, and like magic he gave birth to one of the most heartfelt Powerballads I heard through the whole genre era. 23. Not Enough Time - INXS INXS have hits and misses. Its funny how some people upgrade songs that they felt mediocre on another RD. I do it all the time. I actually kicked this one down about ten slots lower, but I was never a fan of it anyway. 22. Always the Last to Know - Del Amitri I also knocked this one down a few slots, but I kept it in the realm of songs I like from this list. 21. Lithium - Nirvana I was actually relived to know that this showed up this early. I wonder how low this would have ended up on an Alternative Rd? Now I know Rock is usually about sex, drugs or Rock n Roll, but at least make it fun for us. I never understood the attractiveness of these downer themes. Anyway Kurt really sounds like this Hanna Barbera classic icon. Especially towards the end of the song. CAaaaaptaiiiin CAAAAAAAAveman!!! Now I truly feel for you guys when you hear Austin shout "FAAAAAACK THAAAAAAAT!" :kii: 20. Summer Song - Joe Satriani Great powerrock song. Add some vocals , spruce it up and we could have a Volbeat song. 19. Right Now - Van Halen Van Halen beats out one Nirvana song. That calls for celebration right there. There is no reason why this classic should have gotten anything under a 20...unless maybe you are not a fan of Sammy's vocals. I can't imagine any other singer making this song work. This truly needed Sammy's gruff style to make it work. The lyrical works are very inspirational here. I even wrestled with the idea putting it at #1 for a while but I got ROCKED instead. 18. Nothing Else Matters - Metallica I grew up with flamethrowing 80's Metallica. The stuff on "Ride The Lightning" and "Master Of Puppets", so I was still trying to process Metal Ballads Metallica. I had just gotten a grasp of the Awesomness of "Enter Sandman" when they pull out the violins. That was a shock that I eventually came around too, but it took a while. 17. November Rain - Guns N' Roses Most Epic Powerballad Guns N' Roses ever spitted out. Its nice to see a few of the Hair Metal tankers give this one some much deserved love. 16. King's Highway - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Easily in my top 40. We are nearing a real Epic era for Tom petty and The Heartbreakers. I hope this is a preview of some great votes to come. 15. Breaking the Girl - Red Hot Chili PeppersI used to think this song was sorta cheesy when it first came out, so I got into it pretty late in the game. It eventually made my charts but stalled around the 20's. I became a strong recurrent on my cd player in the years that followed. I really wished we had ranked this one on Alt too. 14. Ghost of a Chance - Rush I loved this song so much I recorded it off the radio on one of those tape cassettes. You know how hard it is to record off the radio, and you usually miss the intro which was my favorite part of the song. That intro less static ridden format is all I had years and it still made my weekly chart top 10. I now have it on mp3. Geddy shows a smoothness in those breakdowns that i wasn't aware would make me love the song even more. His tones really work the song to that epic level Rush is so good at peaking at. 13. Digging in the Dirt - Peter Gabriel I didn't really do much with this song on Alt, so I just let free fall into the tank. It never dug its way out, because I never really liked the back round percussion at all. 12. Girlfriend - Matthew SweetHere is a banger that sounds at home on any format. Even Pop. I loved it here because of its POprock vibe and I loved it on Alt because I prefer the Guitar oriented jams anyway. 11. Bravado - Rush Another great track off the album. I'm surprised I'm one of the lowest rankers. Still in my top 40, maybe a underranked it a bit? It just didn't have the fire that "Ghost Of A Chance" had. I guess the only way we will see Rush get top 10 action is when we continue RD into the 80's.

EXTRAS:
Just Take My Heart - Mr. Big This had some Tesla in the intro. Listen to "Love Song" than call me back. The song soon goes into another direction. I like Mr. Big, but not as much as some of you. Compare this ballad to other 80's Glam ballads. The melody is certainly there, but vocally lite compared to other monster powerglam ballads. Funny thing is Mr. Big got heavier as the years progressed. Still not into them tho.
Tough It Out - Webb Wilder This sounds kinda ridiculous in the vocals. Flat out swamp crap to me.
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen I don't care how old this song is it would have made my top 5 on this RD. I even brought it back to my charts. Probably have to sacrifice one Def Lepp song. They both English bands so more power to British Rock. GOD bless Wayne's World for keeping my favorite Rock genre alive. meanwhile Beavis and Butt-Head can kiss my Winger loving ass.
It's Over Now - L.A. Guns There goes that country western vibe I was telling you about. This song was rally cool, but I preferred "The Ballad of Jayne". These guys and Gun N' Roses once made up some of Hollywood Rose.
All I Want - Toad the Wet Sprocket This would have done great on my Active list. If only because we didn't rank it on Alt, but this was also top 10 material for my own weekly chart. It's so catchy it's no wonder it blew up on Pop.
Johnny Have You Seen Her? - The Rembrandts This band had good vocals. The song is alright. bit on the too mellow for me side of the tracks, but the chorus sounds decent.
Big Goodbye - Great White There was so much talent flowing around in the Hair/Glam Metal scene that even I had to choose which songs to chart. I remember liking Great White a lot when they first the scene with "Stick It". That one was a hard balls in your face anthem Metal song. "The Angel Song" was also a favorite, because of the completely different side to them. This one right here was a bit more heavy and his vocals really punched the chorus. I'm thinking an easy top 40 song for my 1992 Metal list.
Black Flag - King's X I didn't care for this one. I would have preferred Black Flag the band.
Yesterdays - Guns N' Roses This one had Bon Jovi elements. I liked it but it didn't bring me to my "Shanananana knees" I mostly liked all Guns N' Roses songs until they began to suck and that Whistling "Patience"song. I always thought that was beyond cheesy.
Runaway Train - Elton John featuring Eric Clapton This one had a decent rock groove. Nice to hear Elton John singing over some guitar oriented rock, but this melody also reminded me a bit of "i Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That". Eric sounds tops as well.
Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting - The Who The Who covering the Elton John. I liked it, but this is Elton's song. It does beat that Daltry travesty we witnessed a few nights ago.
Touch the Hand - Bryan Adams Rehashing his own "One Night Love Affair" in the guitar strums. It's good for the heat of moment, but I forgot it immediately afterward.
Chained - Giant Giant had a huge Powerballad on Pop as well. This kinda sounds like Bad Company. I like that. Great freaking chorus.
You're Invited but Your Best Friend Can't Come - Vince Neil Never a dull moment when anything Crüe is involved. This song was pure adrenaline fire from the first guitar strum. I love it and it shot up my weekly top 40, before peaking at #20. I always felt the melody Vince had to follow in the verses was sort of off. The chorus was fine but also too Bon Jovi for him. One of the best aspects of this song besides Vince vocals was the guitar and bass. All done by Steve Stevens from Billy Idol. Robbie Crane from Ratt was also part of the project until he got into a fist fight with Vince. Gotta love Rock n Roll.

{ONE MORE WORD WALL}#30: No surprise to see this lower here, though I did still expect it to make the top 25. #29: I liked this and "Mama, I'm Coming Home" about equally. Solid later-era Ozzy song. #28: It's wild that, not only is this where the first Crowes song shows up, all three of the Crowes songs made the top 30. I assumed that one would, but I wasn't as sure about the other two. The right one is lowest, at any rate. #27: Two people ranking this song bottom 20 in a rankdown like this...that's silly. #26: Yeah, this was their best this year. Would not have expected it to almost make the top 25, but sure, why not? #25: No surprises with the Crowes order. This would be a contender for the best Crowes song we've ranked so far in any other year. #24: I'll say it: I'm not particularly happy that this is his best performance yet, even though I do like it and ranked it fairly high. I prefer "Gets Me Through". Having said that, it bodes well for 1991. I would like for him to have a new personal best performance two years in a row. #23: Another one where I'm like, "sure, why not?" Crazy that this is their new best performance by over 20 spots, at any rate. #22: I mean, it's fine. I also would not rank it bottom ten here, either. #21: If it makes some of you feel better, this was my lowest Nirvana song (and close to the lowest I've ranked them since 1995). It's one of the weak points of Nevermind, even if I still love it. #20: Well, that's not the bottom 25 I would have expected here...kind of. I would love for Joe to make the top 20 in the future with at least one more song. We'll see. #19: Yep, easily the biggest surprise of the rankdown. I figured this would be their best performer to date (and probably by a decent margin), but the fact that it performed nearly 60 spots better than their previous best before this rankdown began is staggering. #18: Before I even look at this reveal...it's my #1, right? ...yep. I'm, honestly, a little shocked that it's lower than my #2. Okay, real talk: The fact that gates put this in the bottom 20 and below some of the dreck in this rankdown is absolutely ridiculous. Predictable, but ridiculous. Bottom five in my 90's rankdown is one thing. Bottom 20 here is another matter entirely. (To be fair, I also expected both of my top two to miss the top 20 because of tanking.) #17: F uck you, gates. #16: Among the best Petty songs we've ranked, to be sure. Fitting spot for it. #15: WHOA. I would NOT have expected this to miss the top ten. Holy crap. Perfecto, though, sure, why not? #14: The right Rush song is highest. I'm also not sure why I have that crossed out, some of you probably knew exactly what Rush song would be my highest. #13: This being at the top doesn't surprise me too much, actually, given when it was #1. Funnily enough, I was one of the biggest proponents of this song going into Alt 1992, and I'm one of the five LOWEST rankings here. #12: Awwww, I was rooting for this to make the top ten. Damn. #11: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. BRIAN, WHY?!?! THIS WAS THEIR GOD DAMN YEAR TO DO IT! WHYYYYYYY? Every song remaining is really good or better, so, honestly, given that my top two are out, I don't really care about the winner. Having said that, I'm rooting for my #5...which means that it'll, probably, be one of the first two songs out of the top ten.

I finally pull away from Disassociative and it's Janinho that takes over number one " src="//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/superangry.png">: 30. Friday, I'm in Love: In all honesty, I'd thought I'd hate the song when I heard it in Alternative. But I didn't. Also surprisingly, I didn't hate Shiny Happy People in the 1991 Alternatives. #ThingsThatMakeYouGoHmm 29. Road to Nowhere: I was fine with the fierce guitars, but they drowned out the vocals which were kind of hard to pick up until the chorus. 28. Thorn in My Side: Fine with this being the lowest Black Crowes, but it's nice to finally see some respect. Prediction: Hard to Handle does worse than Remedy because of at least ONE tanker. 27. Drive: Will echo Red in that this rankdown was thin enough that it shouldn't have had any bottom 20s. Too many other easy targets. 26. No Son of Mine: Nice to see some justice for Genesis. But to be fair, this was the one that sounded most like a rock song for this round. The driving guitars and the touching lyrics are the selling points to this one. Can't wait to see everyone have to consider where to place I Wish It Would Rain Down in a year or two! 25. Sting Me: LOL. This was my lowest of the Black Crowes songs. It's solid enough, but those lyrics could have been stronger. 24. Mama, I'm Coming Home: I thought I'd have ranked this higher, but something bugged me during my listen. It sounded like Ozzy was singing inside a phone booth. The vocals are good enough and the lyrics are heartfelt, but I couldn't quite overcome that production issue. 23. Not Enough Time: This feels like a good placement for this song. In response, enjoy this GIF: 22. Always the Last to Know: Why did I put this in my bottom 10? Say you're dating someone. But you cheat on her with another woman. She dumps you. And now, you're whining why she's not telling you about her relationship with a new man? It's because you were unfaithful, you dolt.21. Lithium: It's a solid Nirvana tune with good vocals and lyrics. I mean I get it if you can't stand his voice, but that's probably the only reason I'll take. 20. Summer Song: As per usual, Satriani was solid on the guitar. But he could have ended his song a bit sooner and it would have done better. 19. Right Now: Remember when this song was used to shill Crystal Pepsi? Man, I wasn't a Pepsi fan but I used to enjoy Crystal Pepsi. One of Van Hagar's best songs because of that piano at the beginning and those riffs from Eddie. Sammy was solid on those vocals. 18. Nothing Else Matters: Surprisingly, it's a love song from Metallica which works because of the softer guitar play that contrasted nicely with James's voice. 17. November Rain: I normally don't like long songs, but I can make exceptions for those who take the time to justify the length. Slash's guitar playing, Axl's vocals, and the orchestral feel this song has make the most of its time. Thumbs way up. And for those who chose to tank this song, I dub thee The Pulse Rock Fun Police. Because we can't have too much fun over here, right? 16. King's Highway: It's a solid tune from Tom and company, but the lyrics could have gone deeper. Still a fine rank for this one. 15. Breaking the Girl: And now for something completely different: a Red Hot Chili Peppers song that I didn't care for. They've done significantly better. 14. Ghost of a Chance: Rush was kinda mediocre to bad this round. This was their best song, I think. The guitar was fine, but I don't remember much of it. It vanished just like a ghost. 13. Digging in the Dirt: Nice dark storytelling marks one of his better solo efforts. Fine spot. 12. Girlfriend: Now this was more like it. My response: 11. Bravado: Hey Red, I never got the memo that Rush was supposed to be Top 10 this year. It leads to some disturbing questions that I'm not going to breach here, but maybe you can see why I'm shaking my head as we speak. As for why, it was an OK rock song. OK isn't going to cut it in any of my rankings at least when it comes to high ranks unless we're dealing with a real stinker of a year. Tonight: The top 10. A solid batch with the possible exception of one dog that has had its day.

What songs are you surprised made it? Maybe Wherever I May Roam or Hunger Strike? Don't get me wrong. It's a solid field and since all the remaining songs are in my top half, I have no complaints. What songs are you disappointed missed out? Digging in the Dirt, Girlfriend, and November Rain Wanna make some predictions?! Janinho goes missing and I get blamed for it, forcing me to call this guy: 10. Jeremy---I think there's two known tankers for this song and it'll be enough, LOL. 9. Hunger Strike---I get it, it's Chris Cornell. 8. Under the Bridge---I think there's at least one tanker for this one. 7. Wherever I May Roam 6. Remedy---I think this'll go a bit further than some think. 5. Evenflow---The fun police might make an arrest, I think. 4. Come as You Are 3. The Unforgiven---Best Metallica performance in these retro rounds. 2. Alive---When in doubt, go with the slowest, softest song from the group. 1. Smells Like Teen Spirit---I don't think this'll be denied. Even Doc's behind this one. Can't wait to see who'll prevent this from happening.

If I'm typing in Georgia, size three font, and I'm not hosting the rankdown, then that can only mean one thing: THE CRUTCH THAT I RELY ON MUST RETURN! IT'S TOP TEN P-P-P-P-PREVIEW TIME! As always, if I make a mistake or leave something out, make sure to let me know.
- We only have one debut top ten entry this time, though it's a band that has had many chances to make the top ten before: The Black Crowes. No matter what happens tonight, "Remedy" will give the band their best finish so far. - Temple of the Dog are not only making their third (and final) top ten appearance, but they also did the double...one of many songs in this rankdown to do so. "Hunger Strike" did very well in Alt...can it experience similar (or better) success here? - Now, let's get to all of the multiple songs artists in this top ten. First, Metallica, making their fifth and sixth top ten appearances. Despite the many, many times they've appeared in a rock chart rankdown previously, this is the first time that the legendary band has doubled up in a rock chart rankdown top ten. How will "Wherever I May Roam" and "The Unforgiven" fare? - Pearl Jam are the biggest threat to the top spot, with three chances to take home the rankdown gold. With their eighth, ninth, and tenth rock chart rankdown appearances, PJ will be looking to get their first rankdown topper. - Nirvana are making their tenth and eleventh top ten appearances, all coming in just four total years. Their biggest song is also here, but "Come as You Are" came mighty close to winning Alt. Nirvana have to be seen as a favorite to win with either song, but will they? - And finally, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are making their thirteenth top ten appearance, also doing the double. I thought that RHCP would have two songs in the top ten themselves, but, instead, they will have to settle for their biggest hit being their representation for the second rankdown in a row.

This song barely held on to a spot in the top ten after being slingshot out of the top 5 right at the very end
