Doesn't need it. It already smashed in Europe without much of a push.

A natural pop hit! We love those. Dare I say this his most pop friendly song he’s ever released? Hopefully Rhythmic starts moving faster, but I’m not too worried because this is going to smash hard on Hot AC, which will make up for the lack of Urban interest.

SUNDAY PUBLISHED 1/12 UPDATE:CHR/Pop:34 27 THE WEEKND Blinding Lights 2266 1181 1085 10.422 The Weeknd's Top 40/M peaks to date:#1. "Earned It" #1. "Can't Feel My Face" #2. "The Hills" #3. "Love Me Harder" (Ariana Grande & The Weeknd)#3. "In The Night" #3. "Starboy" (The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk)#3. "I Feel It Coming" (The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk)#3. "Pray For Me" (The Weeknd & Kendrick Lamar)#12. "Lost In The Fire" (Gesaffelstein & The Weeknd)#13. "Heartless" #27. "Blinding Lights" #38. "Might Not" (Belly featuring The Weeknd)#38. "Power Is Power" (SZA, The Weeknd & Travis Scott)#47. "Call Out My Name" Chart run: 50 − 44 − 38 − 34 − 27 − (...) Wow that's surprising that Love Me Harder didn't hit #1 on Pop, I could've sworn it did. What’s more surprising to me is “Earned It” hitting #1 but “The Hills,” “Starboy,” and “I feel it coming,” which are arguably a lot more pop-friendly, fell short.

The two Starboy singles had really bad callout for some reason. "Starboy" in particular had a stellar start on radio only for callouts to cripple it.

In the grand scheme of things, did it really matter that it only hit #3 on pop radio? It was a #1 Rhythmic hit, and I believe top 10 on Urban too, which basically led to it hitting #1 on the Hot 100. Once you are so high up in the radio stratosphere, these details don’t really make a difference in my opinion. Wasn’t it a #1 radio hit overall too?

Yeah, it didn't matter much but one would think such a pop-friendly, massive hit would go #1 on the format. (As for it hitting #1, if I recall correctly it took an iTunes discount for it to finally seal the deal, it came very close several times and it was looking like it was gonna get blocked).

I didn’t think “Starboy” sounded that pop friendly. It definitely sounded like a 2016 hit though, leaning more rhythmic. I always felt like pop was his 2nd big base, behind Rhythmic. So any success he has at pop is technically a “crossover.” I believe “Can’t Feel My Face,” “In the Night” and now “Blinding Lights” (all Max Martin songs), is the only times where pop radio led. All the other times it’s been Rhythmic taking the lead.

Also, i know this is an unpopular opinion but i wish this success of blinding lights led him to have an album full of Max Martin. I’m so ready for Max to go full pop and ditch the fail urban wannabe sound. An 80s inspired synth-pop / Disco album would be amazing.

Max Martin’s songs with The Weeknd have been Max’s best material out of everything he’s done after Teenage Dream/1989. The Weeknd for some reason doesn’t let him take full control of the wheel and the result is different than all the standard Max Martin pop songs. They are great collaboration partners. I was actually disappointed that they released “I Feel It Coming” over some of the Max Martin material on the “Starboy” album that deserved single treatment instead. But I think there might have been reluctance after “In The Night” underperformed off BBTM, and “Can’t Feel My Face” got outperformed by “The Hills.” Streaming audiences preferred R&B Abel, while radio preferred pop Abel. Because of this, he hasn’t really been able to find a middle ground, other than “Starboy” the single.

Completely agree, although i think Max did a great job on the Sweetener Album. The thing is, when the artist pushes him, he forgets about trends and sounding “cool” and he delivers great pop songs. Anyways, i hope this goes N1 on biillboard.

It's a little odd and interesting that his most pop-driven song is receiving such a positive feedback on the current urban dominated market. This song has been smashing all over Europe where his previous songs didn't have such a strong presence. As someone who loves both his pop and urban sound, I absolutely love this and I'm glad it's picking up so much on the US. Looks like a potential top 10 hit in the making.

This needs to be a massive #1 hit please. I liked it from first listen but it's grown on me immensely.
A proper video will be coming out in a couple days it looks like:

Can we all agree that they only gave Heartless the main push was to say that they got back to back number 1 hits (If Blinding Lights ever gets that far)?
I mean, come on, did they really think Heartless was the better song of the two? We all knew from the start Blinding Lights was the smash.
The only difference is we knew this song could stand on its own in terms of gaining ground. If this was pushed super hard in its first week and Heartless was secondary, I don't even know if Heartless would have hit top 10.
Kind of genius if this was in fact what they were doing. Hats off to them.

Hats off to them. A big artist is always likely to score a #1 with a comeback single, whether it is good, standard or bland. We’ve seen this happen many times. So yes I agree, it was smart to roll out a weaker song as the first single and save the bigger songs for later. I have a feeling he will drop his album on Valentines Day (probably titled “Heartless” too?) and they will do a second batch of double singles, with one being more Urban and serving as the follow up to “Heartless” and another one being more pop friendly and following “Blinding Lights.” This way in total he can manage 4 hit singles off an album which is a rare these days. I think they learned their lesson from the “Starboy” campaign which emphasized heavily on the 1st single and causing the rest of the album/singles to lose momentum once they were consumed by the public.
