What are some examples of political songs that became hits. Lets define a hit as top 10 in the US hot 100.
Example: "Chained to the Rhythm" (#4) by Katy Perry

CTTR was a hit, like it or not. Not a big one, but still a hit.

I’d argue “American Idiot” was a hit, but “Wake Me Up When September Ends”, which was much bigger and more original than “Chained to the Rhythm” by the way, is the first answer that came to mind.

Left field contender. Obsessed, number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. It was a woman liberation, anti misogyny moment and a prelude to the metoo movement. This was a woman going up against toxic male who used his fame to bash almost every pop star. Also reverse drag was used here. Oh so poignant and subtle woman empowerment anthem. That is now trending again due to its statement.

"Not Ready to Make Nice," Dixie Chicks (#4)
"Dear Mr. President" by P!nk was a pretty decent hit in some countries.

"We Are the World," while not a big critical favorite, would be one.
Aside from "Papa Don't Preach," a number of Madge's hits could be regarded as political. "Material Girl," for instance, epitomized the greed of the '80s, Reaganomics, etc.
I edited, as I was listing others that weren't U.S. top 10. :)

2Pac’s “How Do U Want It” briefly addresses his critics, specifically C. Delores Tucker, in the second verse. She was a huge critic of gangsta rap back in the mid-90s.
