Artist: Billy Ray Cyrus & Johnny McGuire Single: "Chevys and Fords" Writers: Johnny McGuire, Jordan Walker, Rodney Clawson, Ben Hayslip Label: Wheelhouse Records/BBRMG Impact Date: September 23rd, 2019
This song will impact country radio on September 23rd. The Wheelhouse Records imprint for BBR will promote it. Billy Ray Cyrus is on BBRMG and as far as I know, Johnny is with them but not any plans to promote any solo stuff at the moment.
Johnny McGuire was one half of the duo, Walker McGuire. Jordan Walker is now strictly a songwriter in Nashville but they did write this one together with Rodney Clawson and Ben Hayslip.

Singing with Billy Ray Cyrus must be in vogue now. Imagine if Cyrus can score a solid country hit now.

This is fantastic. I've always enjoyed Billy Ray's voice and the guy from Walker McGuire sounds good here, too. Really enjoy the melody and lyrics as well (the hook is very strong). Simple, classic country tune right here. Would love to see this make it onto the chart, even if it's only down in the 50s.

That's not why. It's because he's an older artist who hasn't had a radio hit at the country format in 12 years and before that, nearly 20 years. This song is no more country than the latest offerings by Luke Combs, Jon Pardi and Midland. The reason they're getting success is because they're newer and that's huge in mainstream radio -- they're on major tours and are marketed as the new stars with this generation of country listeners. It's not singling Cyrus out, this happens to most artists in music -- you get to a certain age and you don't see success at radio. "Old Town Road" is not a fair comparison, nor should it have given hope to his country radio career, because that was another artist's song and Cyrus went along for the ride (along with it being an extremely rare instance of a song absolutely exploding across all platforms). I love "Chevys and Fords". I was also disappointed it got six adds out of the gate but Billy Ray Cyrus isn't a priority to corporate radio right now. It's clearly not because of the song, the song is terrific. It's not just because it's deemed "too country."

I wonder if this would have fared better if it was just a Billy Ray Cyrus solo song (it probably wouldn't have, so I'll answer myself). The song is so strong, but it was going to be a long shot for Billy Ray to get a hit again nonetheless with someone virtually unknown tagging along on it. I'd have love to seen this as just Billy Ray by himself or with a duet partner with some current gravitas at radio (Luke Combs, Jon Pardi, etc.).
