“Except for Monday” was released as the third single from Lorrie’s second album Something in Red and was a Top 5 hit for her in late 1991. Unfortunately this missed the top five here which is unfortunate considering it was a near top contender for a good part of its run. This received widespread support with four top 10’s and four top 5’s including a near top ranking placement from George Strait Junkie . This was even able to withstand @xfer ’s bottom 10 ranking but it was actually .indulgecountry ’s non-top 30 ranking that ended up pushing this one back just enough that it wasn’t able to recover by the time that the final two lists came in.

I'm really surprised! I thought that "Except For Monday" was a strong contender for #1.

Holy shit this is a painful rankdown! Lol. "Except For Monday" is one of those songs that most country fans should recognize, even if they don't know who sings it. This song was inescapable at radio for most of the '90s, and definitely stands out as a career-defining song for her! That being said, I like everything that remains more, so this one missing the top 5 slightly is actually a best-case scenario for me :) I have left: 1 2 3 5 8

I've got my 1, 5, 6, 8 and 11 left. While I'd love for my #1 to win, everything that is left is really good.

Alright, let's do this. The first song to leave inside the top five comes in as the 8th most polarizing song and with its exit see's a participant depart with their top ranking song.

“Something in Red” was released as the fourth single and title track to Lorrie’s sophomore album. The song reach number 14 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart in the summer of 1992. The song also earned Lorrie her first and only nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. I’m thrilled to see this do as well as it did because it was quite nearly my top ranking song, but I’m happy to see that it received at least one #1 ranking which comes from our very dearest bboat11 . While this was our 8th most polarizing song it received plentiful support with three top 10’s and six top 5 rankings. That left Kanenrá:ke hanging out down near the top 30 while George Strait Junkie and @xfer were the only ones to show up wearing black.

Fantastic song. I remember reading (years and years ago) that Lorrie turned off the song before finishing it when listening to demos, because she thought that the narrator would just end up choosing a sexy black dress, and that it was a bit of a silly song. But then, at someone's (her producer, I think) urging, she gave it a second chance, listened the whole way through, and ended up falling in love with it. I'm very glad that she did! EDIT: This isn't the article I read before (I'm pretty sure it was a Country Weekly article), but it's an interview from last year where she says the same thing. She also really didn't like "What Part Of No".

“What Part of No” was released as the second single to Lorrie’s third album Watch Me and was Number One on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart for three consecutive weeks. This becomes the final song from that album to exit the rankdown. This received widespread support in the top 15 and remained a very solid top 5 contender for a majority of its run. George Strait Junkie becomes our next participant to depart with their top ranking song while three others including castleoblivion26, Kanenrá:ke , and bboat11 all depart with a top 5. Literally everyone found room to put this in their to 20 except…you guessed it @xfer who finds himself down in the bottom 10.

Yeah, those sub-top 20 ranks for "Something In Red" are just plain not right. Literally her career-defining hit. Let me guess, it was "too dated"? Tbh the lyrical concept for "Something In Red" is so ridiculously well-crafted, I cannot give it enough praise. The way the narrator explains what color she is looking to wear for various occasions in her life is such a unique idea, and the way the colors change based on the story arc is beautiful. She's looking for something in red to attract a lover, something in green because she's jealous when he briefly falls for somebody else, something in white when they finally get married, something in blue for the baby to wear when he is a newborn, but then their romance starts to fizzle out again because they've been married awhile, so she is once again looking for something in red to reignite their passion... Seriously, the story arc behind the color choices is brilliant. And the last verse of this song is one of Lorrie's very best vocal performances. She really sells her soul for this song! I'm glad it made the top 5, but the bottom 20 ranks honestly make me mad...

Yassss, look at Lorrie championing consent before it was a big talking point!!! "What Part Of No" is also among her most iconic jams, and I am so happy with its top 4 finish!
Now, I'm guessing "Five Minutes" will take it, but I would literally be happy with any of these! "I Didn't Know My Own Strength" still being in is a pleasant surprise, because I love that song, but I seem to recall it getting severely done dirty in a year-end rankdown once? Or am I crazy?

Also, in @xfer 's defense, I remember him saying before that he is not really much of a lyrics person. I don't remember, was it because English isn't your first language, or am I confusing you with somebody else? Anyway, "Something In Red" is really a song that gets carried by its lyrics in ways that most songs don't. So the low rank from him is at least somewhat understandable

It was featured in tim's 90s Women of Country rankdown several months ago, but it will be featured in the '95 year-end rankdown (alongside "Back in Your Arms Again"!) coming some time this summer hopefully! But you may be right. I can see IDKMOS getting somewhat sacrificed among some of the stiffest competition to date imo! We'll see what happens though.

We haven't done its year (1995) yet, but it did come in at #27 in the 90's women rankdown (I just checked). Sadly, I think that was more due to Lorrie herself than the actual song. Most of its low rankers aren't participating in this rankdown though.
