It is definitely hard to go wrong with the early Silversun Pickups albums. "Growing Old" isn't one of my absolute favorites, but yeah, that second half is great stuff.

#4 had a rocky road. It wasn't always top 10 and took some time to permanently take residence inside of it - although it is not the highest standard deviation among the four remaining songs. Again, ten top 10s are eliminated, including six top 5s. Three bottom 10s were the major source of opposition as multiple people will finally clear off their bottom 10s here.

I don't listen to Anberlin nearly as much as I did when I was 15 or so, but this track is still absolute fire
also get my bottom 10 out

#3 spent the second most amount of time at #1. More than half the participants ranked this song in their top 10, including a mind-boggling eight top 5s, and multiple #1 eliminations are happening here. Oh, and most importantly, this was a single point behind the #2 song.

Personally, I ever so slightly prefer the updated version, but I think that has more to do with the better production quality than anything else. If this version had the same production quality (and maybe the guitar intro), I probably would like it more than the updated "Feel Good Drag".
Having said that, the rawness of this version definitely gives it an edge that FGD doesn't have.

This and "PDA" are just peak 2002, man. Interpol have had highlights since their debut, but I personally think that they never reached these kinds of heights again.
1 vs. 5
#1 is, obviously, my favorite song in this rankdown...but I'm rooting for my #5.

Feel Good Drag is a triumph in the context of typical rock radio fare. Outside of that context, though, it can't compete.
Go "Rebellion"

Gimme Sympathy vs Rebellion (Lies) Fun facts about the matchup:
• Five #1 ranks are still standing. • Fifteen top 5 ranks are spread out over these two songs. • A single bottom 10 rank remains. • Despite being in the lower portion of the closeness rankings, alexcuse is the lucky holder of a perfect top two. • Only two points separate the #1 song from the #2 song. That's right: the top 3 were only separated by 3 points.

And that's a wrap! Thank you everyone who submitted, followed along and commented! I had a blast hosting this, and hope you made some great discoveries along the way. We might do this again... someday. When I manage to put together another list of songs I'm fully satisfied with - which might take some time given my obsession over the little details. Again, thank you so much!

I love Metric but this track has just never been one of my favorites and I can't pinpoint why :/ cool to see them get a win though!
this was a VERY good rankdown and you did a great job hosting, especially for your first time Geo! I'd love to see you tackle another one of these sometime soon

Fuck, 2 points, I could've swung that if I wanted!
Oh well, a great song was winning either way and I'm not even close to lowest rank. But yea, "Rebellion" would be in a FOAT list if I made one

So, here's a fun fact: "Gimme Sympathy" was my original #3. I only made the switch to put "Obstacle 1" there fairly last minute. My #3-#5 are separated by very little, which is part of the reason why I was rooting for "Gimme Sympathy". The other part is that Metric have, to my knowledge, never done this well in a rankdown. It's really cool to see them finally get to the top. Now, having said that, "Rebellion" is one of the best songs on Funeral...and Funeral is one of my favorite albums, so there was (almost) never going to be any doubt as to what my #1 was going to be here. The only way it could have been more obvious is if it was "Wake Up" instead. I did BRIEFLY flirt with the idea of putting "Antibodies" there instead, though. Geometrical, don't have any doubts about your ability to host rankdowns after this. You did a great job here.

10. Lights & Music - Cut CopyAwesome first listen. This is what I actually like my Alternative Rock to sound like. 9. Ice to Never - The Black QueenThat's a shame. There goes one of my favorites to win it all. I knew this would be someone's #1 song. 8. Crystal - New OrderDammit! some members here are trying really hard to a keep a Synthpop song from winning. 7. Telepathy - CrossesHere is a Chino Moreno song I actually dig. I like the actual hit off the album even more. 6. Hunting for Witches - Bloc PartyOne of my favorite ALternative Rock songs of that year. The guitars take it to FIRE level. 5. Growing Old is Getting Old - Silversun PickupsI like some songs from this band. This first time listen was not one of them. 4. The Feel Good Drag - AnberlinClassic song. Their absolute best, but thank goodness we are not that predictable. 3. Obstacle 1 - InterpolThis is a really cool song. REAL aternative rock needs to make a comeback. 2. Rebellion (Lies) - Arcade FireThis was not at "Creature Comfort" level , but it wasn't bad. 1. Gimme Sympathy - Metric Hell YEAH! That felt good. Geometrical A lot of fun listening to the songs for this RD. Looking forward to part 2.

Glad to see one of my favorite Metric songs win. As I said before reveals started, this was one of the best personal rankdowns that I've ever completed. I found a good number of new artists from this and really makes me eager to check out more Synthpop music.
Great job hosting, Geo! Hope to see more from you in the future.

Really great rankdown, probably the best set of songs I've ranked so far on Pulse (even ahead of the 80s YE finals), and I think over 3/4 of these were new discoveries for me.
Seeing Arcade Fire vs Metric in the final makes up for the loss the Canadian artists took with "Man I Used To Be" and really happy to see my #1 win ofc. It would've been more difficult for me if it was Neighbourhood #3 instead of Rebellion. Have Metric been a lot of RDs? Especially wondering about their earlier singles like "Monster Hospital", "Dead Disco" and "Combat Baby".

IIRC we ranked "Breathe Underwater" and "Help I'm Alive" - the latter being one of my favourites - in retro Alt RDs. We also ranked "Speed the Collapse" in one of Red's presonal rankdowns, finishing at #4 if I'm not mistaken. I don't recall ranking their earlier singles anywhere, but don't take my word for it - I didn't do every rankdown out there, especially the ones prior to mid-2018.
