I bring this song up all the time when songs that were ahead of their time are mentioned. One of the most 80's sounding songs was released a year before the 80's began.
This song was released 50 years ago this year.

probably the 3 biggest music genres to become popular in the 2nd half of the 20th century were Rock and Roll,Disco and Rap. Rock became popular in the mid 1950's , Disco the mid 1970's and Rap the late 70's . here are some early songs that pre date them becoming popular.
Rock and Roll became popular in 1954 and 1955 but a real early example was this song from 1948 which was a popular r&b song that year.
Disco became popular in 1974 but this song from 1971 which hit #1 is a great example of a song before it's time that had a big influence in later years.
Rap music took off it late 1979 but here is an early example from 1968.

sorry for the double post but i just thought of Sweater Weather by the Neighbourhood which was incredibly ahead of its time imo. despite being released in 2012, when the trend for alternative music was bright, upbeat songs with explosive choruses (think Pompeii, Out Of My League/The Walker, Safe and Sound, etc), it fits in way better with the more lowkey, atmospheric alt music from the latter half of the decade and was potentially one of the catalysts for that shift.
honestly i think The Neighbourhood was very ahead of their time in general and had their second era been managed better (read: released Daddy Issues as a single), i think they'd still be big today.

23 by Mike Will Made It/Miley Cyrus et al. would have been a huge pop smash if it were released anywhere from 2017-present. Ughhh CHR would have eaten it up.

(to clarify even though i love all 3 of those, this is not a good thing.)

Back That Azz Up doesnโt sound like it released in early 1999 at all. It was a couple years if not a whole decade ahead in sound.
Such Great Heights by The Postal Service doesnโt sound 2003 at all. Itโd be a big alternative hit if it had been released in 2010-2015 I think.
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea would probably have been a number one album if it were released in 2007. Itโs basically modern indie rock 101.

The Beatles, "Got To Get You Into My Life" - released on Revolver in '66 but to me it sounds like a 70's song Suzanne Vega - a lot of her Solitude Standing album which came out in '87 but sounds like mid-90's music to me

Gucci Gucci by Kreayshawn sounds like something from 2018-20' despite being from early 2011. That song came out at the wrong time, could be a massive hit.

Maybe not in the mainstream but I know like 50 indie-pop bands from the 2010s who sound exactly like this song

The entire Blackout album was ahead of its time in retrospect because it landed a few months before electro-tinged dance pop became the defining sound of the late 00s/early 2010s.
Carly Rae Jepsen's 2012 album Kiss was also ahead of its time because it featured the 80s-lite synth-pop sound that would become huge in the mid-2010s and continues to dominate pop radio even now (see "Blinding Lights").

Rihanna's BBHMM
Without a shadow of a doubt would enjoy The Box level of chart success if released last Friday despite its underwhelming chart peaks at the time of its release.

This song came out around 2002, but it sounds like it could kinda work in 2017 (in terms of the production and lyrics.)

Idk if itโs been said but the whole of ARTPOP by Lady Gaga feels very on trend with the kind of hyperpop thatโs popular now in Charli XCX, 100 gecs etc. It would have been way better received now than it was

in the early days of Rap it was mostly separated from R&B. in 1984 a good example of the blending of the 2 styles was this Chaka Khan song with rapper Melle Mel which reached #3 on Billboard.

This song sounds like a song from Post Malone's Hollywood's Bleeding album, or more generally a chill-pop song that works in 2019 and 2020. Release: 1977

In the Summer of 2014, MUCH Music would play "A Place Like This" by Majid Jordan. This song, at that time, felt "weird" to hear. Not in the bad way. It had chill/laid back/ambient production, which really stuck out as it's overall tone and vibe was something I hadn't heard before. Music at that time still had more emphasis on a beat/somewhat poppy production, so A Place Like This really did stand out. Its ambient or quiet vibe was what sounded so odd hearing along with all the other songs of that time (not in the bad way. It was an interesting song.) It wasn't until 2017 when the chill/laid back/ambient production/sound became the overall dominant sound of popular music. It's the Late 2010s/Early 2020s sound. The song only came out in 2014.
In late 2014, "Often" by The Weeknd played on the radio (in Canada) quite a bit. It has the ambience, as well as the laid back vocal chop used as an instrument, of a late 2010s song (there was a more festival type of sound involving vocal chops being used as instruments at the time, of course. It took a couple years for it to be taken in a more laid back direction then become a staple of what would be Chill Pop.) The sound became dominant in 2017, the song came out in 2014. Definitely a little bit ahead.
