What are examples of songs that were truly ahead of it's time?
"Please Don't Stop The Music" I feel is one.
And seeing "Truth Hurts" blow up in 2019 despite coming out in 2017 might be a good example too.

The Black Eyed Peas's "The E.N.D." singles
Truth Hurts was ahead of it's time? That song is literally Black Beatles female version

Cars - Gary Numan (this stuff doesnβt sound like 70s music!) Video killed the radio star - Buggles (idem) Hung up - Madonna (new disco and dance with a drop, before Rihanna ) MuΓ©velo muΓ©velo - El General (several years before reggaeton became popular he had already had a big hit in this genre)

Aaliyah's "One In A Million" is the original Trap&B song.

commented about this on another thread, but for a song that peaked in the teens then fell off the face of the earth, Gold by Kiiara was actually extremely influential imo
also...
Love Galore by SZA (paved the way for female lead R&B to make a comeback) White Iverson by Post Malone both of the big Bryson Tiller singles in 2016ish Bad and Boujee by Migos a lot of Lorde's Melodrama
and tbh? i may get laughed at for this, but i actually think Gucci Gucci by Kraeshawn was very ahead of its time and would probably be received much more positively had it been released today.

IMO, a song ahead of its time would be severely hindered for success and is thus completely different from a hit song that started a trend. The later should be considered to be right on time, no?
So something like "What You Waiting For?" by Gwen Stefani could go here. It was largely unsuccessful in many territories, but had it been released like 5-6 years later, I think it would have been a huge smash everywhere. However something like "Boom Boom Pow" doesn't count as it was massive and one of the songs responsible for the dance pop boom.

I'm gonna counter this argument by saying that a song doesn't have to be severely hindered for success, but rather if it was released today (or when said trend was popular) it would just be much bigger than it is. Yeah, that still rules out stuff like "Boom Boom Pow", but your definition completely undercuts songs that were moderately successful but had the potential to smash if released today. Stuff like "Hard in Da Paint" by Waka Flocka Flame and "Love Sosa" by Chief Keef might have been modestly successful mainly on their genre charts when they first came out, but had they been released now they would have likely smashed or at the very least been a lot bigger than they were.

I didn't say a song had to be an outright flop to be considered ahead of its time, I just said it clearly need to be hindered somehow, ruling out the alarmingly high amount of smash hits being listed in this thread.

Ahh, I think the phrase "severely hindered" kinda threw me off there, I interpreted that as something that didn't really chart at all lmao
