Yeah, the 2000s didn't have much at all.
But, the #12 song (Family Affair) was #99 in the 60th anniversary chart, and the #39 song (Lollipop) came in at #206.
The lowest song in the top 600, at #599, was Bent, the #78 song of the 2000s. #600 was Take On Me from 1985, which had its TW weighted to 54 weeks.
Even We Belong Together is pretty low. It's lower than Closer, the #4 song of the 2010s.

If the idea is to achieve parity amongst the six main decades then one arbitrary method would be as follows: for each decade, determine the let’s say 200th biggest song of the decade. Then use a multiplier to equalize the points of those 200 songs. Use that factor and apply it to all 200 songs from each decade. The same factor would be used for the 50s and 60s. And the same factor would be used for both the 2010s and 2020s. Then you’d guarantee a top 1200+ songs with equal representation and a 6 way tie for that last position. I might try that...

Also even a #1 like "Say So" which actually had a really decent chart run for a #1 today, has lower points than every single #1 hit from the 1980s. Say So: 507,392 Smallest #1 of the 1980s (Dirty Diana): 543,756 Even "Life Is Good", an 8-week #2 has less points than the weakest #1 of the 1980s. The formula is literally now at a point where either a song does massive on the all-time list after spending lots of weeks top 10 (Circles, Blinding Lights, The Box) or it just does absolutely terrible on the all-time list even it has a nice run (Savage, Say So, Life Is Good). There is no inbetween. Billboard def has got to reevaulate the point system for today. Problem is there's no really easy solution. The fact is that there is a much greater disparity between the, say #10 & #100 songs of the year today than there was 30 or 40 years ago. Not unlike the distribution of wealth, the "Ricch" are getting a much larger slice of the pie, while the poorer charting songs are getting a lot less. If you try to even the scenario out for one era, you end up over exaggerating a different era. I've done analysis on the distribution of tracks by decade on the top songs from my list and here's how it breaks down: Years | Top 100 | Top 500 | Top 1000 | Top 5000 | Top 10000 | 1950s | 3.0% | 3.6% | 2.6% | 2.7% | 2.9% | 1960s | 9.0% | 12.2% | 13.2% | 20.2% | 21.7% | 1970s | 13.0% | 18.2% | 19.8% | 20.5% | 20.4% | 1980s | 18.0% | 20.0% | 23.2% | 21.8% | 20.1% | 1990s | 20.0% | 16.6% | 15.1% | 14.0% | 13.5% | 2000s | 12.0% | 13.8% | 13.1% | 11.1% | 11.6% | 2010s | 25.0% | 15.2% | 12.5% | 9.2% | 9.3% | 2020s | 0.0% | 0.4% | 0.5% | 0.4% | 0.5% |
The Hot 100 began in August 1958, so the numbers for the 50's are small. And of course, the 2020's have barely begun in chart terms.
Ideally, each decade (except the 50's & 20's) should get about 15% of tracks over a reasonable number of songs. But fully a quarter of the all-time top 100 are from 2010 to 2019 - a significant oversampling, while the 1960s are underrepresented with only 9 tracks in the top 100.
Now when you extend that to the top 500, the number of tracks each decade is more reasonably even. The 1980s now becomes the most represented decade with 100 of the 500 songs but no one decade seems to be greatly over- or under-represented.
By the point where the top 10,000 songs are included, the rich/poor gap of the past couple of decades really shows. The 60's becomes the most represented decade (21.7%), the 2010's least (a mere 9.3%).
If the ideal was to get nearly the same number of tracks from each decade in the top 600, they did a pretty good job.
Thanks for the data. It really backs up what I was saying, which is that now the point formula for their era creates: 1. Very high ranking monstrous smashes due to them spending half a year+ in top 10 (shown by the top 100 being overrepresented with 2010s hits) 2. The rest of the hits suffer very low rankings (shown by the top 1000 and beyond underrepresented with 2010s hits) It's two extremes for today's hits, and now goes against the idea of representing decades equally. I always noticed that whole era of 1985-1991, where they applied the 2x multiplier, is just really overrepresented in general too. Ironically, that's the biggest era of where nearly every hit had identical chart runs. Even the fluke #1's like Dirty Diana which charted very quick, still got a good amount of points, because nearly every hit was charting so quick at that time regardless. It wasn't like today post-Soundscan where you have plenty of huge chart runs even when there is a share of weak chart runs at the top. The biggest problem with this is that ofcourse, it gives a notable advantage on the All-Time Hot 100 Artists rankings. Artists from the 60s and 80s have all their top 10 hits get a decent amount of points, even if some were flukes, because the chart was just relatively quick for all music. Whereas an artist today has a song spend 2 weeks top 10, and it'll get almost no points -- even if it actually did manage to have longevity outside the top 10. All because of the fact there's also songs that spend 30 weeks top 10.

I do think perhaps they could just reweigh the #11-#50 positions as I suggested. Maybe only do so for Soundscan years, if it would somehow put pre-Soundscan years at a disadvantage when applying to them. The main issue remains the fact it's so top 10 emphasized when so many hits in the technology era have huge runs outside top 10 for months.
The Billboard 200 All-Time/Decade-End also applies a near-identical formula, and it shows how ridiculous a top-10 emphasized formula can get at some point. Journey's "Greatest Hits" album was the longest-charting album of the 2010s, with 499 weeks, and it didn't even make the Decade-End Top 200. Chris Brown's Indigo charted for a total of 12 weeks before the cut-off date and made it.

Maybe only do so for Soundscan years, if it would somehow put pre-Soundscan years at a disadvantage when applying to them. The main issue remains the fact it's so top 10 emphasized when so many hits in the technology era have huge runs outside top 10 for months. The current formula for the all-time chart gives a net effect of 14,000 points bonus for each week in the top ten. That more than doubles the points going from #11 (11,600) to #10 (26,000). So you'd think if that top ten bonus were excluded it would have a major effect on how songs rank. So I took the songs that peaked in 2020 and compared the scores with & without that (admittedly ridiculous) top ten bonus, expecting to see major changes in the rankings. I was surprised to find it didn't have that much impact.
With Top10 bonus | W/O Top 10 Bonus | Artist | Track | Current Score | w/o top10 bonus | 1 | 1 | Roddy Ricch | The Box | 967,120 | 687,120 | 2 | 2 | Weeknd, The | Blinding Lights | 937,792 | 624,192 | 3 | 3 | DaBaby | ROCKSTAR [DaBaby] | 658,240 | 456,640 | 4 | 4 | Dua Lipa | Don't Start Now | 656,320 | 432,320 | 5 | 5 | Maroon 5 | Memories | 620,320 | 418,720 | 6 | 6 | Future | Life Is Good | 582,800 | 392,400 | 9 | 7 | Megan Thee Stallion | Savage | 492,352 | 335,552 | 7 | 8 | Doja Cat | Say So | 512,992 | 333,792 | 11 | 9 | Harry Styles | Adore You | 390,800 | 312,400 | 8 | 10 | Justin Bieber | Intentions | 494,800 | 282,000 | 10 | 11 | Tones and I | Dance Monkey | 401,904 | 278,704 | 15 | 12 | Maren Morris | The Bones | 273,394 | 273,394 | 13 | 13 | Jack Harlow | WHATS POPPIN | 353,312 | 241,312 | 12 | 14 | SAINt JHN | Roses (Imanbek Remix) | 382,000 | 236,400 | 14 | 15 | Drake | Toosie Slide | 335,280 | 223,280 | 18 | 16 | Mustard | Ballin' | 224,366 | 211,168 | 17 | 17 | Lil Mosey | Blueberry Faygo | 237,184 | 192,384 | 19 | 18 | Gabby Barrett | I Hope | 195,104 | 183,904 | 20 | 19 | blackbear | Hot Girl Bummer | 187,833 | 176,784 | 16 | 20 | Harry Styles | Watermelon Sugar | 265,088 | 175,488 | 22 | 21 | Trevor Daniel | Falling | 170,960 | 170,960 | 24 | 22 | Camila Cabello | My Oh My | 137,264 | 137,264 | 21 | 23 | Lady Gaga | Rain On Me | 173,040 | 128,240 | 27 | 24 | Roddy Ricch | High Fashion | 126,560 | 126,560 | 29 | 25 | Dua Lipa | Break My Heart | 121,200 | 121,200 | 30 | 26 | Morgan Wallen | Chasin' You | 112,512 | 112,512 | 25 | 27 | Lewis Capaldi | Before You Go | 133,328 | 110,928 | 33 | 28 | Powfu | death bed | 104,928 | 104,928 | 34 | 29 | Lil Baby | Woah | 104,240 | 104,240 | 32 | 30 | SCOTTS, THE | THE SCOTTS | 106,240 | 95,040 | 26 | 31 | Cardi B | WAP | 128,000 | 94,400 | 35 | 32 | Ariana Grande | Stuck With U | 101,024 | 89,824 | 28 | 33 | Chris Brown | Go Crazy | 121,664 | 88,064 | 23 | 34 | Jawsh 365 | Savage Love (Laxed - Siren Beat) | 141,824 | 85,824 | 31 | 35 | Justin Bieber | Yummy | 108,048 | 85,648 | 39 | 36 | Blake Shelton | Nobody But Me [duet] | 84,352 | 84,352 | 42 | 37 | Surfaces | Sunday Best | 78,784 | 78,784 | 38 | 38 | Eminem | Godzilla | 86,208 | 75,008 | 43 | 39 | Black Eyed Peas | RITMO (Bad Boys For Life) | 72,592 | 72,592 | 41 | 40 | Lil Baby | We Paid | 81,872 | 70,672 |
The bolded songs are the ones that never reached the top ten, and while they move up a little, the effect is far less dramatic than I expected.

Here's my second (and more complicated) balancing attempt. I took the average of the top ten scores for each decade, then calculated each song's score as a percentage of the average of those top ten songs of the decade. For example, the total of the 2 chart runs of The Twist was 158.87% times the average of the top ten songs in the 1960s. Songs from the 50s were rebalanced on the same basis as the 60s and songs from this year the same as the 2010s.
The list starts out with a nice distribution between decades but then some decades (1980s & 2000s) take up a quarter of the top 100 each.
ETA: I realized hours after the first post that I missed the #1 song of the 80's, Physical. Bringing that in increased the average of the top ten songs of the 80s, so that actually lowered the scores of other tracks from the 80s. (They got an even lower percentage of points compared to the top ten average.) So six tracks the 80s fell off and were replaced by songs from different decades, making it somewhat more even.
Decade rank | All time rank | Year | Total score | Artist | Track | Adjusted score | 1 | 1 | 1962 | 1,811,520 | Chubby Checker | The Twist | 158.870 | 1 | 2 | 1959 | 1,413,482 | Bobby Darin | Mack The Knife | 123.962 | 1 | 3 | 1999 | 1,490,260 | Santana | Smooth | 121.312 | 1 | 4 | 2009 | 1,329,300 | Black Eyed Peas, The | I Gotta Feeling | 118.229 | 1 | 5 | 1981 | 1,305,184 | Olivia Newton-John | Physical | 114.808 | 1 | 6 | 1977 | 1,296,704 | Debby Boone | You Light Up My Life | 114.229 | 2 | 7 | 1968 | 1,282,310 | Beatles, The | Hey Jude | 112.458 | 2 | 8 | 2005 | 1,261,120 | Mariah Carey | We Belong Together | 112.165 | 3 | 9 | 2004 | 1,249,400 | Usher | Yeah! | 111.122 | 1 | 10 | 2015 | 1,380,485 | Mark Ronson | Uptown Funk! | 111.068 | 2 | 11 | 1997 | 1,336,220 | LeAnn Rimes | How Do I Live | 108.772 | 2 | 12 | 1981 | 1,225,344 | Kim Carnes | Bette Davis Eyes | 107.785 | 3 | 13 | 1996 | 1,323,520 | Los Del Rio | Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix) | 107.738 | 2 | 14 | 2011 | 1,325,870 | LMFAO | Party Rock Anthem | 106.674 | 2 | 15 | 1976 | 1,200,720 | Rod Stewart | Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright) | 105.774 | 3 | 16 | 1981 | 1,202,336 | Diana Ross | Endless Love | 105.761 | 3 | 17 | 2017 | 1,307,760 | Ed Sheeran | Shape of You | 105.217 | 4 | 18 | 2016 | 1,274,440 | Chainsmokers, The | Closer | 102.536 | 4 | 19 | 2007 | 1,148,940 | Flo Rida | Low | 102.187 | 4 | 20 | 1996 | 1,251,600 | Toni Braxton | Un-Break My Heart | 101.884 | 3 | 21 | 1978 | 1,155,904 | Chic | Le Freak | 101.826 | 3 | 22 | 1960 | 1,160,964 | Percy Faith | The Theme From "A Summer Place" | 101.816 | 4 | 23 | 1977 | 1,155,264 | Bee Gees | How Deep Is Your Love | 101.770 | 4 | 24 | 1982 | 1,155,072 | Survivor | Eye Of The Tiger | 101.604 | 5 | 25 | 2019 | 1,257,344 | Lil Nas X | Old Town Road | 101.161 | 5 | 26 | 1977 | 1,142,752 | Andy Gibb | I Just Want To Be Your Everything | 100.668 | 6 | 27 | 2019 | 1,242,800 | Post Malone | Circles | 99.991 | 5 | 28 | 1983 | 1,136,256 | Police, The | Every Breath You Take | 99.948 | 6 | 29 | 1983 | 1,120,672 | Irene Cara | Flashdance...What A Feeling | 98.578 | 7 | 30 | 2018 | 1,224,371 | Maroon 5 | Girls Like You | 98.508 | 4 | 31 | 1961 | 1,117,410 | Bobby Lewis | Tossin' And Turnin' | 97.997 | 2 | 32 | 1959 | 1,115,744 | Johnny Horton | The Battle Of New Orleans | 97.850 | 5 | 33 | 1997 | 1,196,640 | Jewel | You Were Meant For Me / Foolish Games | 97.410 | 6 | 34 | 1976 | 1,093,040 | Wings | Silly Love Songs | 96.288 | 7 | 35 | 1973 | 1,092,080 | Marvin Gaye | Let's Get It On | 96.204 | 6 | 36 | 1991 | 1,181,120 | Bryan Adams | (Everything I Do) I Do It For You | 96.147 | 8 | 37 | 1978 | 1,088,416 | Bee Gees | Night Fever | 95.881 | 5 | 38 | 2001 | 1,072,060 | Nickelback | How You Remind Me | 95.349 | 7 | 39 | 1980 | 1,083,200 | Queen | Another One Bites The Dust | 95.282 | 7 | 40 | 1994 | 1,166,600 | Boyz II Men | I'll Make Love To You | 94.965 | 8 | 41 | 1983 | 1,073,728 | Paul McCartney | Say Say Say | 94.448 | 9 | 42 | 1973 | 1,067,920 | Dawn | Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree | 94.075 | 6 | 43 | 2007 | 1,053,860 | Alicia Keys | No One | 93.731 | 10 | 44 | 1978 | 1,058,944 | Andy Gibb | Shadow Dancing | 93.285 | 3 | 45 | 1958 | 1,062,126 | Tommy Edwards | It's All In The Game | 93.148 | 5 | 46 | 1964 | 1,059,950 | Beatles, The | I Want To Hold Your Hand | 92.957 | 8 | 47 | 2011 | 1,152,230 | Rihanna | We Found Love | 92.704 | 8 | 48 | 1998 | 1,138,700 | Next | Too Close | 92.694 | 7 | 49 | 2009 | 1,038,660 | Black Eyed Peas, The | Boom Boom Pow | 92.379 | 8 | 50 | 2004 | 1,035,660 | Mario | Let Me Love You | 92.112 | 9 | 51 | 2009 | 1,027,740 | Ke$ha | TiK ToK | 91.408 | 9 | 52 | 2019 | 1,136,065 | Post Malone | Sunflower | 91.403 | 10 | 53 | 2005 | 1,026,740 | Kanye West | Gold Digger | 91.319 | 9 | 54 | 1980 | 1,037,184 | Blondie | Call Me | 91.234 | 11 | 55 | 2007 | 1,025,420 | Timbaland | Apologize | 91.201 | 11 | 56 | 1978 | 1,031,456 | Bee Gees | Stayin' Alive | 90.863 | 10 | 57 | 2012 | 1,127,810 | Gotye | Somebody That I Used To Know | 90.739 | 10 | 58 | 1980 | 1,029,440 | Kenny Rogers | Lady | 90.553 | 11 | 59 | 2017 | 1,122,352 | Luis Fonsi | Despacito | 90.300 | 6 | 60 | 1966 | 1,027,140 | Monkees, The | I'm A Believer | 90.080 | 12 | 61 | 2011 | 1,118,370 | Adele | Rolling In The Deep | 89.979 | 9 | 62 | 1995 | 1,103,900 | Mariah Carey | One Sweet Day | 89.861 | 11 | 63 | 1982 | 1,019,744 | J. Does anyone know Underneath It All was the only song to make the 2002 and 2003 year-ends but fail to make the 2000s decade end, and has the most weeks on chart of all song that cracked the 2002 and 2003 year-ends?

Okay, here's a weird situation which applies to exactly two singles from 1970, and you really should know all the songs involved:
- Down On The Corner / Fortunate Son by CCR
- Come Together / Something by The Beatles
When these tracks originally charted in October-November 1969, Billboard kept A-sides and B-sides of singles separate on the Hot 100, so all 4 of these tracks charted separately. Then in mid-run, Billboard changed the rules and both sides were each charted as a combined entry.
On the CCR track, Down On The Corner charted first, then a week later Fortunate Son actually charted higher than the A-side. It remained the higher charting song until the week of Nov 22, when it was listed as the B-side of DotC. The A-side only and A+B sides of Down on the Corner get 494,232 points, but the separate tracking of Fortunate Son gets 45,730 points.
I propose that the points of the two runs be combined into a single entry of Down On The Corner/Fortunate Son and get the total 539,962 points. That would move it from about #1673 to #1364.
Similarly, I propose that the partial run of Something be added to the Come Together run by the Beatles, which produces even more spectacular results. Before the tracks were merged, on the week of Nov 15, 1969 chart, Come Together was #2 and Something #3. The week after Something (which held at #3) topped Come Together which had sunk to #7. The week after that, the two side were combined and that was enough to push the song to #1!
Were the chart masters at Billboard influence to change the rules so that The Beatles got another #1 they otherwise would not have had? Frankly, I suspect they were.
Joining the points of Something as a separate run with Come Together increases the Come Together total from 661,230 to 890,390, moving it from #748 to #181 of all-time.
I'd appreciate the thought of chart deep-divers like tanooki & lonewood on this, and anyone else who has more to say than "who cares?". (I understand the latter opinion, but that's literally what I'm trying to find out.)

(I understand the latter opinion, but that's literally what I'm trying to find out.) #181, wow... Does DOTC/FS have the same rules applied to it from Billboard that stuff like Foolish Games/You Were Meant For Me had? I'll admit I'm still a bit confused by the whole B side thing tbf

Down On The Corner/Fortunate Son according to CCR's Billboard chart history is only listed as having charted 15 weeks which would be only Down On The Corner's chart run, but makes sense since both songs debuted at the same time and thus had 5 overlapping weeks in the Hot 100.

#181, wow... Does DOTC/FS have the same rules applied to it from Billboard that stuff like Foolish Games/You Were Meant For Me had? I'll admit I'm still a bit confused by the whole B side thing tbf Different but interesting situation. Foolish Games was released as a single, which allowed it to chart. As it went down the chart, You Were Meant For Me started getting airplay, but Jewel's record company didn't want to release it as a single. So it would have suffered the same dismal fate as Killing Me Softly by The Fugees or Iris or Don't Speak - a huge radio hit that failed to chart due to Billboard's rule of only charting commercially released singles. But then some reader pointed out in Chart Beat Chat that Meant was the B-side of the limited vinyl release of Foolish so it was eligible for the chart. So both sides charted in the same position with Meant being listed as the A-side on the Hot 100. Even though there were practically zero sales since the vinyl single sold out months earlier.

It didn't matter that the single was selling now, it mattered that it had appeared somewhere at some time on a single and thus was eligible to chart. As someone who bought physical copies of singles in the 1990's with my allowance/birthday money, I can note that this was not an uncommon situation where multiple songs with airplay appeared on the same physical single, which often sold for upwards of $3.00 for a cassette tape at Walmart.

Where songs from this week's Hot 100 would be ranked on a chart listing the top 10,000 of all time, for the chart week of Sep 12, 2020 Last Week | This Week | Chg | Track | Artist | Total Pts | 18 | 17 | 1 | Circles | Post Malone | 1,250,800 | 131 | 109 | 22 | Blinding Lights | The Weeknd | 964,992 | 763 | 628 | 135 | ROCKSTAR

| Taylor Swift | 86,880 | 8055 | 7935 | 120 | We Paid | Lil Baby and 42 Dugg | 84,272 | 9081 | 8530 | 551 | For The Night | Pop Smoke | 74,800 | 8876 | 8748 | 128 | Party Girl | Staysolidrocky | 72,064 | 9185 | 8942 | 243 | One Margarita | Luke Bryan | 69,296 | 9400 | 8951 | 449 | Popstar | DJ Khaled and Drake | 69,200 | 9711 | 9429 | 282 | Wishing Well | Juice WRLD | 63,520 |
So The Box not unexpectedly falls off the chart and therefore juuuust shy of the all-time top 100. It's at #108 all-time this week, but Blinding Lights will pass it next week to be the biggest all-time hit to first peak in 2020. And Circles keeps racking up weeks and points. I figure it's got at least another 5 weeks in the top 25, which could get it to #14. It's sure to pick up one position next week as it's only 800 points behind Un-Break My Heart.
ROCKSTAR is nearing the critical #600 position which would be enough to likely get it onto the next official version of this list.

^You probably meant for the last point that Rockstar has already passed the #650 position threshold. I fully expect Billboard to do the top 650 for the Hot 100's 65th anniversary. It also would mean Don't Start Now could manage to reach it too assuming it racks up enough points before it goes recurrent.
