#35 Meet Me @ the Altar - Tyranny
Chosen By: wheatsquares33 Points: 285 SD: 12.26408964 (6TH HIGHEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Without looking, I would say that this was a wheat pick. (And I would have been right.) This gives me slight early Paramore vibes, which I can't really say is the worst thing in the world, especially for nostalgia's sake. shazam: ...yeah i just don't really vibe too much with this style of pop punk. i get why someone would, but the technicality never sits too well with me

Thoughts from the Hosts Red: If it's a Hot Chip song, I'm going to like it a decent amount and probably forget about it as soon as I've listened to five other songs. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this or any other Hot Chip song I've heard, but they just tend to leave little of an impact on me overall. shazam: this i expected to like more, considering i've liked everything i've heard from Hot Chip. this was definitely still good, but hard to put higher on this list

Bet some of y'all might have thought I sent this, eh? I like Hot Chip quite a bit, but this was an especially strong set, and this song, while good, didn't quite reach the level that Hot Chip are able to reach in terms of quirky, bouncy alt-dance. It's a little too "safe", though the outro is pretty cool.

Thoughts from the Hosts Red: The easiest comparison to make here would be "Joy Division but modern day", but that's lazy. I thought more of that one band that performed "Words Like Fire" a couple of years ago. I think they were named Death Valley Dreams? I was reminded way more of that here, and given how much I liked "Words Like Fire", that's not a bad thing at all. shazam: i absolutely loved the vocals on this track, reminds me a lot of old school post-punk bands. shocked it's out already tbh

#32 Pixies - Catfish Kate
Chosen By: BlurryKyle Points: 334 SD: 9.825316387
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: I think that Pixies just miss Kim Deal a lot. I like Paz Lenchatin a lot, but it's just not the same, and that could describe "Catfish Kate", really...it's just not the same without Kim. All they can do without Kim is try to sound like how they used to, and it works on a surface level, but that's really about it. shazam: i hated putting this low because Pixies rule, but i just feel like their current output is a mere shadow of what they had on, say, Doolittle

Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Well, this is decidedly different from "Cellular". This feels like a song that was made specifically with the current world mindset firmly in the back of Krule's mind, and I think we need this kind of song right about now. I don't know if I like it as much as "Cellular", but it definitely has its place. shazam: King Krule is just not going to do well in this tournaments is he? i loved both of the singles for his new album, bummed to see this land so low

Alright rapid fire reviews:
40: 555- I mean I get why people wouldn't like this JEW song for sure but...idk I think it's pretty nice. I like it more than Love Never
39: Manifest- Starset haven't been doing it for me this past era, the more uh comparatively stripped back sound just doesn't suit them. I liked Diving Bell okay but none of the singles ever clicked
38: Bismarck- Ehh this was okay, think I had it a little higher on my original version of the list. It's a lil too campy for me.
37: Wars- Hm, surprisingly low. Not OM&M's best, but it's listenable. I prefer this sound over a lot of their folkier stuff.
36: Level of Concern- Also kinda surprisingly low. This has burned on me kinda fast, it does have a great groove. But there's a way to make a song topical without like. Making it dated immediately.
35: Tyranny- This finished a little higher than I expected actually haha. Not really sure why I stuck with this one as a submission when I had so many other songs I wanted to use, I knew it wouldn't do well, but it's just so high energy and feel good, I come back to it a lot.
34: Positive- Don't think I've ever heard a Hot Chip song I haven't liked. Still feels weird to me that I thought they were a boy band until like last year for some reason
33: Spirit City- Uhhhhhhh like, there were just some songs on this playlist I had to come back to 4-5 times just cause I absolutely could not remember the. This was one of those.
32: Catfish Kate- Recent Pixies output has not been great, but I do actually like this one. It's very charming.
31: Alone, Omen 3- I still don't get King Krule

#30 WOOZE - I'll Have What She's Having
Chosen By: @chroniclea Points: 363 SD: 11.46286912
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: This is basically an 80's new wave song with modern production. The fact that it wasn't submitted by Doc baffles me. This was fun, though! shazam: i pretty much agree with everything Red said, i thought this was sonically really cool

#29 Local H - Turn The Bow
Chosen By: Lordef†ones Points: 366 SD: 10.42820063
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: A new Local H song...what year is it? Also, holy SHIT, where the hell did the opening of this song come from? I have never, ever heard Local H sound this heavy, ever. If the entire song sounded like that, it would have been in my top ten, no question. As it is, it's still WAY better than I was expecting from this band in 2020. shazam: i did not expect to like a 2020 Local H song so much, this was just heavy as hell, definite QOTSA vibes here and the drumming was insane

#28 Sunbeam Sound Machine - Talking Distance
Chosen By: Beno Points: 380 SD: 12.83088379 (4th HIGHEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Psychedelic styles are the in thing in this seed, it looks like. Believe me, I am not complaining, I dig me some psychedelic stylings in my music, and this song was no exception. shazam: this was one of my highest first listens, i looooved the hypnagogic, psychedelic tones here

#27 Mount Eerie & Julie Doiron - Love Without Possession
Chosen By: peacebone Points: 383 SD: 11.51783514
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: It is impossible to listen to this song without thinking of A Crow Looked at Me, because "Love Without Possession" is still Phil Elverum contemplating life without his beloved wife Genevieve. Without the context, it's still a really nicely performed song. WIth the context, it packs a huge punch. shazam: ugh i reeeeeally wanted to put this higher, Mount Eerie (or just Phil in general) is a brilliant musician, and i really liked the intertwining of folk and indie rock here

Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Perfectly solid dark wave. Not much more to it than that. shazam: on the surface this is something i should love, but, honestly, the vocals held this back a little for me. if the vocals click more, i have a feeling i'd fall for this track for sure
