I was very impressed with this; not too out of the ordinary structurally but I was amazed at some of the sounds/tones they were able to conjure up

#3 Loathe - Two-Way Mirror
Chosen By: lyhom Points: 554 SD: 12.52408207 (5th HIGHEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: These guys absolutely, 100% took advanced Deftones classes. I can't help but say that this is a Deftones knockoff, because it sounds so much like them, especially in the chorus. Having said that, it's not like knockoffs CAN'T be good, and Loathe do a pretty good job of performing the Deftones sound. They definitely seem more inspired here by the shoegaze aspects of Deftones than their other aspects. shazam: well Red already said all the stuff i was gonna say about the Deftones comparison... but this is def one of my favorite tracks of 2020 so far! metallic shoegaze is hard to go wrong with, this track just wraps you up in a thick layer of fuzz blankets. oh hey, it's a ppppppp too

This reminded me of Deftones, a band which I (obviously) love, good to see this do better here than on my personal RD lol. Should check their album out.

This was outstanding. I changed this away from #1 at the very last minute in favor of Day Wave.

#2 Phoebe Bridgers - Kyoto
Chosen By: Daryl the Beryl Points: 578 SD: 8.807293628 (5th LOWEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: I first listened to this back when I was listening to songs for Daryl's recently completed 2020 rankdown that I, sadly, never finished, and I fell in love with it hard then. Listening to it again, it remains as great as ever. I don't know if I'll eventually fall for it as much as I did "Motion Sickness", but it's great for a different reason. shazam: i like this direction for Phoebe! i was a huge fan of Motion Sickness, and while i don't think this quite tops that song, it's close. very very solid track
#1 Gorillaz ft. Peter Hook and Georgia - Aries
Chosen By: Red Points: 630 SD: 6.261830908 (LOWEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Hey, sometimes, I'm allowed to be basic with my picks. Unlike quite a few people, I think that Gorillaz have been releasing decent material throughout the last decade, though it has definitely been more hit or miss in recent times. When Damon Albarn hits, though, it's still incredible, and "Aries" is one of the best songs he's made under the Gorillaz umbrella. That bass from Peter Hook, oh my god. There's nothing else in this rankdown that grabs me the same way. shazam: where did this come from? post-punk/new wave gorillaz featuring none other than New Order's Peter Hook himself. i find myself getting lost in the "high tide" chorus sometimes, this song is just a full-on jam that hits all the sweet spots i love about 80s music. deserving winner for sure!

#10. Day Wave - Starting AgainThis one flowed instrumentally nicely. The "indie voice" worked well because it has a wonderful melody to begin with. Sounds like something I would discover on Sound Cloud's Indeiwaves channel. I figured some would find it boring and predictable, but I knew it would have its fans. Me being one of those. Nice to see it go top 10. #9. Spanish Love Songs - KickThis one tuned me out because of the vocals. Everything else was good. Especially the guitars. I really liked the intro as it reminded of Rival Schools " Wring It Out". #8. Ghost - Mary on a CrossDefinitely one of my favorite songs on this Rd. I love almost all of Ghost's new material as they easily inject 70's and 80's in any song they want and still get a #1 hit. I know its not about crucifying the Virgin Mary, but its also not something I could easily sing along too and not feel just a bit uncomfortable. #7. King Princess - OhioThis was pretty decent. Took a while to get going. 2:00 whole minutes, but once it did it flew up my list. AT one point to #19. #6. Georgia - Never Let You GoThis was a serious synthpop surprise for me. So NRGetic and 80's, and that chorus takes it to the sky. Sounds spectacular in a big room with hi-fi speakers, because the synths reverb from one speaker to the other. Just heavenly. one of the ones I download/Checked. #5. Metric - RiskDefinitely one of my favorite tracks off their latest album. Charted it andd all that good stuff too. #4. Muted Color - Daisy ChainAnother of those Indierock jams I really enjoyed. The stand out for this time were the vocals. Had a strong Killers vibe. #3. Loathe - Two-Way MirrorThis one didn't strike me as the type of song that revs me up. I definitely picked up on that Deftones vibe, but it also had some Smashing Pumpkins. 'Defpumkins" if you will. Just a bit too slow for me. Think of me as Jason Statham in that 'Cranked' movie. I need my musical adrenaline. BTW, wasn't this an ACtive add at one point? #2. Phoebe Bridgers - KyotoI knew this was Daryl the Beryl pick off the back. I like this one. Easily my favorite song by Phoebe so far. The fast basslines with the Baroque pop synths made for a great combination. #1. Gorillaz ft. Peter Hook and Georgia - AriesSo it seems this band got better with age. morphing from Gorillaz to Zombies surely gave them melody. Hey remember when I didn't remember who Peter Hook was? Not one of my shining moments, but definitely one for the Gorillaz. Good game. Looking forward to start previewing jams on seed #2. Mannequin Pussy - Drunk II. There's a song that's certainly on my first day previews
