Things were very exciting at the start of the decade with the whole electropop domination. Genre-wise, the industry has been trying to find the next big thing for a few years now. I still think it’s just an age/demographic thing. I can’t stand most early 10’s electropop. I thought it was a terrible time for music so I didn’t find it exciting. My peers think the 90’s are the golden age of music.. my parents would disagree and think there was garbage all over the radio in the 90’s. I think the way people consume music now will continue to change the way we view musicians, album eras/releases (especially as the industry reverts back to being more singles oriented), etc. I always use the Michael Jackson example. No one in the past couple of decades has even come close to matching the level of fame he reached in the 80’s, but people consume music very differently now and the industry is far more segmented which gives people more options. By the 90’s, there were far more radio formats to tune into than before (whereas before that you had multiple generations listening to pop radio). Now there is streaming which provides the ability to listen to what you want on-demand and makes music discovery far easier than ever before. People have more options, so it’s difficult for an artist to come out and have mass appeal to various generations and other demographic groups. I’d say Adele came the closest to this in recent years, but she in no way reached an MJ or Beatles level of fame. That’s so difficult to achieve now because if A&R is trying to mold someone I to a major pop radio success (or the streaming equivalent), they’re zeroing in on that suburban teen demographic and it becomes difficult to simultaneously appeal to music listeners over 25 as well as urban music listeners (urban music now is rap, so how do you appeal to those listeners as well as the “soccer mom” crowd) rock fans... with more choices there’s less overlap and less potential for mass appeal. I think you summed it up perfectly. More choices for mediums of music consumption results in less overlapping and indeed, less mass appeal, hence the current messy charts we have been witnessing. However, once in a blue moon we get songs like "Old Town Road" which manage to hit with all the demographics, but they are becoming increasingly rare.

Interested to see what went recurrent. It looks like the Christmas bomb this week wasnt quite as intense as we thought it would be, so who knows what may have survived. I think Ransom probably did, as well as Only Human possibly

As long as "Old Town Road" is still there...that's all that matters 😄
It really deserves to hit 52 weeks, even though it's admittedly a 2019 relic by now.

The decades things is nice for PR and such, even if it's for a couple of weeks in the 10 years. Still counts as in that decade. It is a special situation, given it's a classic holiday song that made these records occur and not a new release, though that doesn't matter for the record books.

I had Last Christmas in my predictions. Only one I got wrong. Darn I should have kept Lizzo on my list. Good as Hell hangs on thanks to iTunes discount...nice.

weirdo- good on you. Though, note that it's a debut. ;)
Kris- yes, Dean Martin is *the* classic version. He recorded it at least a couple of times, it looks- there's the female chorus, and then a version with Marilyn Maxwell.

Thank you, although i did end up predicting too many christmas songs in the top 10, but i think everyone did pretty much

Debuts on this week's #Hot100: #45, Baby It's Cold Outside by Dean Martin The Christmas bomb didn't hit as hard as we thought yet this still managed to sneak in. BOO, HISS. I hate this song almost more than I love Mariah Carey. I could generate enough power for a small town with that level of energy.

I like "Cold Outside" so im happu to see that hit top 50 finally, and the terrible "Only Human" might be gone (i hope it is)

I'm content with it 'only' being a top 20 hit so far. 2020 through 2022 will be the best years for Christmas songs to maximize their peak potential.

Mariah Carey #1 in the US is good and all but it stopped Dance Monkey being #1 for a 22nd week here, bless her.

Also, if The Christmas Song ended up being at #11 this week that would be hilarious and unlucky at the same time. Blocked from top ten two years in a row!

I could generate enough power for a small town with that level of energy. It's time we stream John Legend and Kelly Clarkson's superior less problematic version next year. That version is just as much of a mess (I legit just hate BICO as a melodically and structurally basic piece of drivel, without really even considering its problematic nature) and I almost wonder if the mild 'controversy' over their take on it is what pushed the old version up a bit. I think we'd be better off just pretending the crap never existed and prayerfully lead it to die a quiet death.

Unless there is a huge album bomb in the next 2 months OTR should be a lock for 52 weeks, deserved.
