Lil Wayne is on course to land his fifth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart with his new release, Funeral. According to industry forecasters, the set could enter atop the tally with over 115,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 6. The album was released on Jan. 31 via Young Money/Republic Records and follows Lil Wayne’s chart-topping Tha Carter V, which was released in 2018.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the Feb. 15-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Funeral is heading for No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, Feb. 9.
Lil Wayne has previously topped the Billboard 200 with Tha Carter V (2018), Tha Carter IV (2011), I Am Not a Human Being (2010) and Tha Carter III (2008).
If Funeral starts at No. 1, it will not only secure Lil Wayne his fifth leader, but also his 12th top 10 effort. Lil Wayne first hit the Billboard 200 way back on the list dated Nov. 20, 1999, when Tha Block Is Hot debuted and peaked at No. 3.
The most likely challenger to Funeral’s No. 1 arrival is the current leader, Roddy Ricch’s Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial. The album earned 95,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Jan. 30 (down 8%).
Other albums aiming for significant debuts on next week’s Billboard 200 chart — likely in the top 15 — include Russ’ Shake the Snow Globe, Kesha’s High Road and Louis Tomlinson’s Walls. All three albums, like Funeral, will benefit from sales generated by concert ticket/album sale redemption offers, as well as merchandise/album bundles sold through each act’s respective official website.

After a week where nothing debuted in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 albums chart, it appears four titles could bow in the region on next week’s tally. On the Feb. 15-dated chart, where Lil Wayne’s Funeral is expected to open at No. 1, he may be joined by arrivals in the top 10 from Russ’ Shake the Snow Globe, Kesha’s High Road and Louis Tomlinson’s Walls.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the Feb. 15-dated Billboard 200 chart is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, Feb. 9.
Industry forecasters estimate Funeral could start with between 115,000 and 130,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 6, with over 30,000 of that sum in album sales.
Streaming activity will likely comprise the majority of Funeral’s overall starting unit sum, with perhaps 70% of its activity driven by streams. Funeral will also benefit from album sales generated by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer, as well as merchandise/album bundles sold through Lil Wayne’s official website.
If Funeral opens at No. 1, it will mark Lil Wayne’s fifth chart-topper on the Billboard 200.
Meanwhile, Roddy Ricch’s current No. 1, Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial, looks like it will drop down to No. 2 with around 80,000 to 90,000 units.
Hip-hop may hold down the entire top three, as Russ’ Shake the Snow Globe could bow at No. 3 with perhaps 65,000 to 75,000 units. Perhaps 40,000 or more of that total will be in album sales, pumped by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer, as well as merchandise/album bundles. If Shake starts as expected, it will notch Russ his third consecutive top 10 effort, and his highest charting album yet, surpassing his No. 4 peak with 2018’s Zoo.
Kesha’s new album High Road could drive straight in to the top 10, as it may bow with between 40,000 to 45,000 equivalent album units earned. Also eyeing a top 10 debut is Louis Tomlinson’s debut album, Walls, which could start with perhaps 35,000 to 43,000 units. Both High Road and Walls are benefitting from concert ticket/album sale redemption offers, in addition to merchandise/album bundles.
Likely outside the new top 10, the next biggest debuts will perhaps come from Yo Gotti’s Untrapped (27,000 to 33,000 units), Key Glock’s Yellow Tape (26,000 to 30,000) and Meghan Trainor’s Treat Myself (17,000 to 21,000).

17-20k doesn't seem that bad for Meghan, if you ignore how her last two albums opened.
It's on par with Carly Rae Jepsen (Dedicated opened with 21k).

Lil Wayne debuted at #61 in the UK. The second week drop will be ugly in the US too I think, but at least it reached #1.

Louis Tomlinson's 'Walls' Brings Relaunched Arista Records Back to Billboard 200 Top 10 2/9/2020 by Keith Caulfield
Arista Records is back in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 albums chart for the first time in years thanks to the arrival of Louis Tomlinson’s debut album Walls. The venerable label was relaunched in 2018 after shuttering in 2011.
Walls was released via 78/SYCO/Arista on Jan. 31 and debuts at No. 9 on the Feb. 15-dated Billboard 200 chart. It’s the first new Arista album to hit the top 10 in nearly nine years. The last time the label -- which was founded in 1974 by Clive Davis -- appeared in the top 10 with a new album was on the April 16, 2011-dated chart. That week, Jennifer Hudson’s then-new I Remember Me spent its second and final week in the top 10 (at No. 7), after debuting at No. 2 on the April 9, 2011-dated list.
In 2012, after the death of Whitney Houston, a number of her old albums, all released via Arista, revisited the top 10. Among the many acts that called Arista home during its initial 1974-2011 run: Ace of Base, Aretha Franklin, Kenny G, Houston, Annie Lennox, Barry Manilow, Sarah McLachlan, Santana and Patti Smith.

Lil Wayne Achieves Fifth No. 1Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Funeral' 2/9/2020 by Keith Caulfield
Plus: Top 10 debuts for Russ, Kesha, Louis Tomlinson & Yo Gotti.
Lil Wayne’s Funeral -- which debuts at No. 1 -- leads a packed top 10 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, where five albums bow in the region. Funeral is the fifth leader for Lil Wayne, and it enters with 139,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Feb. 6, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. The album was released on Jan. 31 via Young Money/Republic Records and follows Lil Wayne’s chart-topping Tha Carter V, which was released in 2018.
In addition to Lil Wayne entering at No. 1, the top 10 also welcomes four further debuts in the region, from Russ, Kesha, Louis Tomlinson and Yo Gotti, marking the first time five albums have debuted in the top 10 simultaneously in seven months.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Feb. 15-dated chart, where Funeral starts at No. 1, will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Feb. 11. Lil Wayne previously topped the Billboard 200 with Tha Carter V (2018), Tha Carter IV (2011), I Am Not a Human Being (2010) and Tha Carter III (2008). Funeral not only secures Lil Wayne his fifth leader, but also his 12th top 10 effort. He first hit the Billboard 200 just over 20 years ago, on the list dated Nov. 20, 1999, when Tha Block Is Hot debuted and peaked at No. 3.
Streaming activity drove 72% of Funeral’s first-week units, as, of its 139,000 total unit start, 99,000 were in SEA units. (That translates into 134 million on-demand streams for the album’s songs in its first week.) The remaining unit sum of its total first week was provided by 38,000 in album sales and 2,000 in TEA units. Funeral’s first-week album sales were bolstered sales from by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer, as well as an array of merchandise/album bundles sold via his website.
At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Roddy Ricch’s Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial falls one spot with 86,000 equivalent album units earned (down 9%). Eminem’s former leader Music to Be Murdered By dips one rung to No. 3 with 69,000 units (down 22%), though the set’s album sales perked up by 55% to 22,000, as the album’s CD arrived in stores following its initial commercial release on digital download only. Russ’s Shake the Snow Globe bows at No. 4 with 65,000 equivalent album units earned (with 39,000 of that sum in album sales, pumped by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer, as well as merchandise/album bundles). It’s the third total and consecutive top 10 effort for the hip-hop artist, and it matches his highest-rank on the chart, first achieved with 2018’s Zoo. He also visited the top 10 with There’s Really a Wolf in 2017, debuting and peaking at No. 7.
Rap rules the entire top five on the Billboard 200, as Post Malone’s former No. 1 Hollywood’s Bleeding is steady at No. 5 with 55,000 equivalent album units earned (up 1%). The last time the top five albums were all rap titles was a little over a year ago, on the Jan. 26, 2019-dated list. Billie Eilish’s When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? slips 3-6 with 52,000 equivalent album units earned (down 16%). A week ago, the former No. 1 surged 10-3 in the wake of its multiple Grammy Award wins on Jan. 26, including album of the year.
Kesha snares her fourth top 10 album, as High Road bows at No. 7 with 45,000 equivalent album units. Of that starting sum, 35,000 were in album sales, aided by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with her upcoming tour, as well as merchandise/album bundle sales via her official website. Kesha previously clocked top 10s with Rainbow (No. 1 in 2017), Warrior (No. 6, 2012) and Animal (No. 1, 2010). Halsey’s Manic descends four spots to No. 8 with 43,000 equivalent album units earned (down 23%).
Louis Tomlinson’s debut album Walls bows at No. 9 with 39,000 equivalent album units earned. Album sales comprise 35,000 of that sum, driven by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with his upcoming tour, as well as merchandise/album bundles.
Walls was released via 78/SYCO/Arista Records, and brings the relaunched Arista back to the top 10 after nearly nine years. The last time the venerable label appeared in the top 10 with a new album was on April 16, 2011-dated chart, when Jennifer Hudson’s then-new I Remember Me spent its second and final week in the top 10 (and No. 7), after debuting at No. 2 on the April 9, 2011-dated list. (In 2012, after the death of Whitney Houston, a number of her old albums, all released via Arista, revisited the top 10.)
Tomlinson is also the fifth and final member of One Direction, which landed four No. 1s of its own, to chart on the Billboard 200. Zayn was first out of the gate with Mind of Mine (No. 1 in 2016), and he followed it with the No. 61-peaking Icarus Falls in 2018. Then came Harry Styles with his self-titled debut (No. 1 in 2017) and his recent sophomore set, Fine Line (No. 1 in 2019). Niall Horan’s debut Flicker entered at No. 1 in 2017, and he is prepping for the release of his second album Heartbreak Weather on March 13. Liam Payne was the fourth member of the group to reach the list, as his debut full-length album LP1 topped out at No. 111 in December.
Closing out the new top 10 on the Billboard 200 is Yo Gotti’s Untrapped, which starts at No. 10 with 35,000 equivalent album units earned. It’s the fourth top 10 effort for the rapper, and follows the No. 6-peaking I Still Am in 2017. Untrapped was driven largely by streaming activity, as SEA units comprise 27,000 of its total starting sum. It also netted 7,000 in album sales (bolstered by merchandise/album bundle sales) as well as a little under 1,000 in TEA units.

Indeed- four of the five debuts had both album-redemption offers and merchandise bundles, while the fifth had just merch bundles. This is now the norm.

I do believe Lil Wayne and Russ could have made the top 10 without them, while in Kesha's and Yo Gotti's cases it would have been iffy and Louis Tomlinson might not have even made the top 20.

The tricky thing with speculation like that, though, is... sure, some fans "double up" (or more) by buying multiple editions of an album, which boosts sales. However, there also probably are some who may just get the album via an album redemption offer or merch bundle. So if either of those options didn't exist, would they have gotten the album a physical copy via another avenue? No way to really tell.
What wee do know for sure is that a lot of albums that have those options - especially older acts who don't fare as well in streaming as their younger counterparts - see larger-than-average declines after the first week.

^I'm pretty sure Louis Tomlinson wouldn't have done that well without the bundle. He's kind of the forgotten One Direction member.

^Possibly- though ticket buyers redeemed copies of his album and/or purchased merchandise bundles that include the album, so there is some interest in him. If those didn't exist, can you say with certainty that those same consumers would not have purchased a physical copy via other means? Ya see what I mean.

^I get the chicken egg scenario. But it is quite probable that many of those might not have bought the album standalone, if it weren't bundled with the ticket. The weak streaming for him and similar seems to be a giveaway in that regard. It is quite probably that Liam Payne-level album first week numbers could have happened. I guess we'll never know for sure ...

^Yes, let the speculation continue. ;)
Shakira has two studio albums (Laundry Service and OF Vol. 1) re-enter the top 200 this week, while Jennifer Lopez's compilation re-enters (numbers not known at this time).

^Good for them. Not surprisingly, it isn't quite going to be as dramatic as when Joanne and The Fame both re-entered the top 10.

Dance Again re-enters at No. 61; not surprising that it's higher than Shaki's albums, given it houses a number of hits performed during the halftime show. Oral Fixacion Vol. 2 comes in at No. 166, with Laundry Service at No. 200. (I previously write Vol. 1; meant 2).

Shakira was hurt by not having a compilation album. Otherwise, she did better in most other charts. Probably, the most indicative of this is she was #24 in the Artist 100, while Jennifer Lopez managed to be #70 there and the four songs she managed place higher in Digital Song Sales than the two of the latter that charted there.

h100fan- indeed, it looks like Shakira benefited the most, overall.
And, agreed, that it's nice seeing Gary back. :) Welcome back, sir.
