Rap music has been a thing since the 70's and mainstream rap has mostly been about the same things since then so complaining about the content of rap music in 2020 is odd. The only reason why people have issues with rap music or it's content now is because of how dominant rappers have become on the charts. When mindless, repetitive bubblegum pop hits were dominating the charts, no one cared that they were being fed the same formulaic songs. That's not the point, the point is that streaming era strongly favours hip hop and rap because their popularity is the biggest among people who have the most time to CONSUME the streaming services. It is NOT a correct representation of what's popular in ALL demographics (although some acts like Drake are popular in almost all demographics). That's why it WILL look odd when acts like Lil Baby might have 150 Hot 100 "hits" in five years when Madonna has 63 in total when her career spans 40 years. hip hop is undeniably the biggest genre right now. if it werent, ariana grande and shawn mendes would have 150 hot 100 hits but they dont

But it is also totally meaningless for a rapper have a #80 song right now because in his (I'd say his, because for female rapper is is still bit of a feat) game it means that the song is like the 50th most popular that week. So for A Boogie Wit da Hoodie that'd be gigantic flop, for a country artist, a big success.

That's why it WILL look odd when acts like Lil Baby might have 150 Hot 100 "hits" in five years when Madonna has 63. Streaming doesn't necessarily favor anybody. If you want to bring up that argument, I can easily bring up how radio has never and still doesn't favor Rap music generally the way it favors Pop music. There's a reason why 99% of the songs that top radio are Pop songs. Rap only became the most popular music genre in the US in late 2017. Before then, it was Pop music. The only reason why other genres aren't as dominant or seeing close to the same success on streaming is because the fans of those other genres are slow to embrace streaming like the fans of genres like rap and R&B have. The moment that changes, it'll start to even out. That's really all it is.

hip hop and rap have been extremely popular since like, the mid 90s but the charts were designed to hide that success

I wonder what the charts wouldโve been like if weโd had sound scan since the start. The rules at the time really screwed over R&B, hip hop, rock, and country, since IIRC only pop radio was counted. Everyone else only counted on sales.

But they were also hiding the success of rock that sold zillions of albums (No Doubt etc) it was pretty obvious that billboard didn't want hip-hop to be as dominant as it really was, but yeah same with rock/country since only pop airplay was counted for the longest time i point to the creation of the "Pop 100" after the absolute dominance of black artists on the hot 100 in 03/04/05. i would also argue that the recent rules that slash streaming power is also a slight attempt to kneecap hip hop's dominance on the charts

hip hop and rap have been extremely popular since like, the mid 90s but the charts were designed to hide that success And if we're going to be honest, radio played a huge part in that. In many ways, streaming was what evened the playing field for everyone and that's how most rappers enjoy any sort of chart success today. Pop songs can top radio and enjoy an easy stay at the top of the charts, but rap songs have to consistently put up numbers on streaming to enjoy the same and if we're being honest, it's way easier to dominate on radio than it is on streaming.

The Box so far becomes the 3rd song to spend 10 weeks or more at #1 on the Hot 100 without going top 10 at Pop radio. last week on Billboard it was #22 and and as of today #23 on Mediabase . so it looks like top 10 may not happen. the other 2 songs to miss the top 10 were Candle In The Wind by Elton John which topped the Hot 100 for 14 weeks but only reached #32 at Pop radio and I'll Be Missing You by Puff Daddy and Faith Evans featuring 112 which topped the Hot 100 for 11 weeks and reached #11 at Pop radio. surprisingly even though it did not reach the top 10 it was played alot for several years as a recurrent.

Drake breaks the record with a not very good feature on an already forgotten and disposable song. Fitting. Does that not describe a lot of his Hot 100 entries? Fr though he was not releasing tracks on streaming platforms so far this year and out of all the tracks he had, he chose a disposable track to feature in to break the record

"Let's make this habit instead of history," says Warner Music Nashville's Kristen Williams.
Gabby Barrett and Ingrid Andress team up for an unprecedented feat in the top 10 of Billboard's Country Airplay chart (dated March 21).
Barrett's debut single "I Hope" rises 11-9 on the ranking, up by 15% to 24.1 million audience impressions in the week ending March 15, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. The track becomes the first top 10 for the singer-songwriter, who finished third on ABC's American Idol in 2018.
Meanwhile, Andress ranks at No. 10 with her maiden hit, "More Hearts Than Mine" (23.2 million, up 4%), a week after it reached its No. 9 high.
Thanks to both songs, the latest Country Airplay chart is the first to boast two women in the top 10 with solo debut hits in lead roles, dating to the list's January 1990 launch.
"Wow, I feel so blessed to have a top 10 single," Barrett tells Billboard. "['I Hope'] felt special from the beginning, and to see the reaction has been overwhelming in the best way. I can't thank country radio, my fans and my team enough for believing in me. And, I'm so happy for Ingrid. It's an exciting time."
Says Andress, "Sharing 'More Hearts Than Mine' has been a dream come true. Thank you to everyone who's helped this song continue climbing into the top 10 and beyond. We're all part of changing history together, and I can't wait to see what we accomplish next."
Both Barrett and Andress record for Warner Music Nashville, although different promotion teams work each artist to radio. The combined effort is overseen by WMN senior vp promotion and streaming Kristen Williams. "I've been fortunate enough to be part of many artist achievements in my career, but this may be among the most impactful," Williams says. "I'm incredibly proud of Gabby and Ingrid for delivering two bona fide hits, I'm proud of our team for fighting to make sure they continue to be heard, and I'm proud of country radio for embracing these artists as they deserve to be embraced. Let's make this habit instead of history."
While this week marks the first time that lead solo female debut hits have ranked in the Country Airplay top 10 simultaneously, the feat has been achieved via featured roles. Such a double-up last occurred on the chart dated Aug. 11, 2018, by Julia Michaels and Tori Kelly: Keith Urban's "Coming Home" (featuring Michaels) placed at its No. 3 peak and Chris Lane's "Take Back Home Girl" (featuring Kelly) ranked at No. 9, before reaching No. 8 the following week.
Plus, Maren Morris' "The Bones," which led Country Airplay for two weeks beginning Feb. 15, marking her fourth leader, descends 4-7 (25.7 million in audience, down 8%).With Barrett, Andress and Morris all in the top 10, the chart is the first since the survey dated Oct. 20, 2012, to house three songs by solo women in the top tier simultaneously. That week, Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away" ranked at No. 2; Jana Kramer's "Why Ya Wanna" held the No. 4 spot; and Miranda Lambert's "Fastest Girl in Town" was steady at No. 9.
Notably, Barrett, Andress and Morris each co-wrote their respective current top 10s.
Country Airplay and all charts dated March 21 will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (March 17).

โข โDrake broke the record > a LEGEND! Nobody is touching my faveโ. โข โ70% of Drakeโs entries and Hot 100 โrecordsโ are from features/collaborations. LMFAO. It doesnโt count at all.โ. Now weโve established the points that will inevitably made from both sides... How about we move on? Sweet. OT: Slay Ms. Dula Peep! ๐ฅณ I'm going to play Drake rants, pro and against, for the Pulse Bingo card.

Iโm sorry, but I genuinely despise the โsubject matter/lyrics in rapโ argument. There are so many other components to make a song enjoyable than just โsubject matter and lyricsโ. I hope people realise this. You may not have to like it though, but going after the lyrics is just frustrating. Besides, if they REALLY wanted to, a lot of mumble rappers could keep a similar sound and just hire a team (like a lot of pop artists, btw) to give their lyrics a bit more substance.

Overall, who does or doesnโt have the most Hot 100 entries is irrelevant anyway, especially now in the Streaming era where the record will be broken either way and most certainly throughout the 2020โs with more and more album bombs taking place.
โขRihanna only has 61 Hot 100 entries. She has less than Taylor Swift and will soon be surpassed by Ariana Grande, yet is the most successful act on the chart this century with 14 #1โs and will very likely score more when she finally releases.
โขMadonna has less entries than Rihanna with 57 and is the second most successful act on the Hot 100 of all-time after The Beatles.
โขMariah Carey only has 48 entries and yet has 19 #1โs which no active artist (except possibly Rihanna) is even touching.
If Drake had 208 top tens or #1โs... then we could argue.

You got the entire top 9 right. How does it feel to be God? Thank you! (I'm not God, tho. haha...)
This is my hobby and I'm really really happy that I was accurate this week because I was very excited for this album bomb and I spent hours (more than 10 probably) tracking the songs, searching for streaming sources and adjusting the numbers.

Iโm not gonna try and make up a fancy argument as to why I donโt like rap album bombs. I donโt listen to much rap - therefore, it annoys me when a genre Iโm not a huge fan of succeeds. Thatโs it. Iโll get excited if artists like Nicki Minaj, Travis Scott, Megan Thee Stallion or Roddy Ricch succeed, but I donโt like most rap. Uzi is meh to me, the huge bomb is irritating but he seems like a cool dude & I like his aesthetic. โXO Tour Llif3โ was also a pretty good song.
Also, the lyrics argument is bullshit. Letโs take a look at lyrics from The Weekndโs โBlinding Lightsโ, a song that Pulse has a huge ass boner for:
โIโm just calling back to let you know / I could never say it on the phone / Will never let you go this timeโ
Wow, how fucking innovative! Iโve never listened to a pop song with the lyrics โnever let you goโ before! Good lord Iโm losing my god damn mind, the sheer artistry! What a bona fide trailblazer!!!

Everyone else only counted on sales. someone like James Brown who had 96 chart singles from the 50's until the 80's who's appeal to a mostly black audience with his hard edged soul and funk music would probably have had more chart success with the current chart system.
